Here in Brazil they usually call everything just "mp3", and recently street vendors decided it would be nice idea to keep increasing the number whenever the gadget they sell does somthing new. "Mp4", for instance, stands for video players. "Mp5" is both an mp3 player, a video player, and happens to take pictures as well.

I think the newest model is an "mp12", and I hope it's got a built-in coffee machine

Wouldn't it piss you off if everyone referred to their car as a 'Mercedes' or a 'CLK Kompressor' rather than just saying 'my car'?

Calling an mp3 player an 'Apple' or an 'iPod' is no different, unless of course the item is an iPoo.

I hear what you're saying, and of course you've got a point. It is just a brand, and for all I know there are better mp3 players out there. I guess I just see it as they dominated the market so early on that they kind of won out on the name in my eyes.

It's like the term "I could care less". Technically it's not right, and I notice it when people say it, but I know what they mean, and meaning is what is really important in my eyes. I understand if others see it differently though.

Of course they are, but are you seriously going to walk into a store and ask "excuse me, where do you keep your collared shirts with 3 buttons"? It's a name you use to refer to something so that everyone knows what you mean. That doesn't mean I'm only going to buy a Ralph Lauren shirt though. I'll buy the one I like, regardless of brand. Same with Band-Aids, and same with Ipod.

Thinking too much about things like this is a waste of energy imo. Know the difference, but that's it. Thinking a corporation is controlling you because you use their brand name to refer to something is just paranoia.

Guys, polo shirts were called polo shirts before Ralph Lauren ever got in the business.

The shirts were originally made for tennis but became common among polo players as well.
