Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) has called for BP to immediately invest $1B in protection projects

"The failure of the Top Kill procedure to cap the well is a devastating blow to the Gulf Coast. I call on BP to immediately invest $1 billion to protect marshes, wetlands and estuaries across the region. Half of that money should go to short-term projects that can bolster the protection of the Louisiana coast within the next 30-90 days. The other half can be divided up among Gulf Coast states based on the immediate threat posed by oil spewing from the well."

This is so fucked up. I really wish I could go down there and help out. I don't know how much the administration dropped the ball, but BP has definitely fucked up and I hope they get fined to hell and back.

That's great. At this point, this whole situation is surely going to get worse before it gets any better.

I really hope two things come out of this:

1. Obama takes charge and tells BP it's done for. I really don't understand why this hasn't happened yet. BP it clearly too incompetent to fix this. The gov't needs to take control NOW.

2. Americans realize we can use other types of fuel from other sources...like CORN (but omg the price of corn will go up waaaaaah hahahahahah)

Energy from corn is stupid. Hopefully more solar / wind power.

Obama needs to beat the shit out of BP for letting this happen and not fucking fixing it. This is ridiculous.

Well, it could be stupid but it's definitely benign compared to oil from under the damn sea. But yeah solar and wind FTW by far. I was educated on this back in 1995. SO FUCKING long ago yet America really hasn't capitalized off of this. Probably because old sources of energy is owned by old people who don't like change.

Old sources of energy are owned by old rich people who don't like change or other people getting money. Also, people are lazy. Gas is bad, yet it's convenient, so most people don't mind. Also, people don't care.

Well, I guess you could also pump water upstream and then use dams to generate electricity and call it green energy.

Yep. Hence why wind + solar for the win.

I get depressed when people brag about using ethanol. It's worse than just using gas, since it ends up with more pollution. Plus it gives off massive amounts of smug as well.

The only drawback I've heard about wind energy is killing birds. I find that hardly a big enough reason to not use wind energy. It's least expensive to build right? But Solar Power can potentially generate more power. I saw some chip commercial talking about how "the Sun in one day can generate enough power so why don't we start using that power." Ironically it then goes on to advertise a god damn fucking bag of chips. That's like saying, "Hey guys think of the forest animals don't cut trees! Buy our lube."

HAHAHA!!! Well said!! It's socialism for US corn farmers. It makes more sense in Brasil with the ethanol from sugar cane being not nearly as fuel-intensive to harvest nor does it affect the food chain.

You're not thinking like a politician.
Any politician that doesn't have a bulletproof solution to this that goes running in to take personal ownership of a bleeding mess like this will get utterly destroyed. If they could find a sacrificial public servant (ala, Hurricane Katrina) and send them in there to be the fall guy if it inevitably goes to hell, then they might do that.

Otherwise, its much more expedient to just sit back and let BP take all the blame, inefficient, ineffective and utterly deniable.
