It first came out as a single in 1990, then again on Blue Lines in 91.

Listening now. That Jaa track is more goa to me than psy, but the others have been solid psytrancers so far. 16:15-transition wasn't very good. Certainly didn't feel properly synched/timed. Didn't last that long, but was noticeable.

edit: Otherwise no specifically bad remarks about the mixing/transitions. The mix had some good tracks and I believe most of it was what Hamid was looking for in a psytrance mix

I will listen to Rodri's after this one

Agreed here. The way you brought in Exposed was okay, you lost energy, but that wasn't my issue with this track. You bumped the speed up way too fast and thumping in comparison to the first track. The mix into Contact wasn't very good, you should have started it way sooner, and the beats were off a bit. In general, the flow was a bit confusing and the mixing was a bit iffy, it seemed like you were quite afraid to beatmatch most of these! Don't be so timid next time, just keep the low frequencies down during the mix in, and try not to let the beats get too heavy.

I would have probably ordered the tracks like this to fix up the flow a bit.

-Jaia - Mai Mai
-Son Kite - Game & Watch
-Neelix - Contact
-Ace Ventura - Exposed (Liquid Soul Remix)
-Ticon - Chicken Shaker
-Wizzy Noise - Behemoth
-1200 Micrograms - God of Rock
-Silicon Sound - Pure Reality (Ephedrix Mix)
-Ephedrix - Prototype (Chichke & Multitech Mix)

Nice effort though, I liked most of the tracks. Track of the set IMO was either Chicken Shaker or Pure Reality. Nice work!

So uh, I think I did it right. In comparison to the three tracks that were posted as examples of this genre it looks like I took a more mainstream approach.

I was really digging this genre, a lot. What was pretty cool about it is that it's a pretty versatile bag. From my understanding the whole UK Funky thing is really housey stuff with percussion reminiscent of a style like reggaeton. I tried not to stray too far from that but I can definitely see all sorts of other styles mixed up with this.

Cosmic Beat - Funk The Pain Away by Cosmic Beat

1. Robin S - Show Me Love (Geeneus Remix)
2. Estelle - Comve Over (Crazy Cousinz Remix)
3. Diamond - Fly Away (Ft. Sophie Romain)
4. Gracious K - Migraine Skank
5. Fish Go Deep - The Cure & The Cause (Dennis Ferrer Remix)
6. Nick Holder - Summer Daze (Funkin Skanks Mix)
7. Aaron Carl - Oasis (Nick Holder Vocal Dub)
8. Fuzzy Logik - In The Morning (Ft. Egypt)
9. Rebecca Knight - Guilty Secret (Sunday Showers)

This is far too poppy and mainstream-oriented funky for my tastes, and too short to really go anywhere. Otherwise, however, this works fairly well as a quick romp through this particular aspect of funky. The first transition is a bit messy, but the quick mixing works well in general for these tunes. I'm happy I actually got a mix out of my choice. Maybe next time I'll get one that's a bit more varied.

Superb stuff, with yummy percussion and bass across the board. The build is extremely subtle on this (even though the last half gets markedly more intense percussionwise), so I wouldn't really listen to this in the background or do other stuff while listening, as it won't be as enjoyable or make as much sense. The middle bit with Sterac, PWOG and Tata Box Inhibitors really gets the trance-aspect of the challenge down to a tee.

Posted by montana on Feb-15-2011 15:06:

rodri i saw your tracklist yesterday and the obvious standout was of course "dvt2001". i wanted to see how you would work it. it was mainly for that reason i downloaded your mix, i didn't want to actually hear a mix of some of the most obnoxious brostep out there. but i try to listen to everyones mix as it's only fair.

yeah, the mixing was decent up till the showdown remix and then it was all disjointed. dvt2001 was quite a nice addition but you needed to worked it better, maybe make an edit before. but yeah there was two songs that made me want to stab myself in the ears repetedly. for the love of jebus, don't ever use them again if you plan to play more dubstep.

lews, good stuff. proper nice '99 era epic trance anthem bashine with a nice programming and decent mixing.

game + watch, not bad. flow was patchy but the mixing was decent for most part. tunes, there was a couple of ones to the end half that was i couldn't remember to save my life. also, the signs of audio degradation due to ableton/pitch lock or what it's called was in the mix and that was a wee annoying. other than that, a good effort.

floyd. yeah, it quite nice but way to short, 'cure and the cause' was a highlight and a good compliment to the mix since it's shuffled percs worked with the proper type uk funky

Posted by netroM on Feb-15-2011 15:27:

downloaded both, will listen to them a bit later.

Rodri:
The mix starts very abrupt. Intro could've been softer.
As you said, it's basically a mix of the commercial stuff and some slightly less commercial stuff.
Just noticed the transition at 14:10 felt harmonically displeasing.
Or at least very short; I felt the same shortness in the other transitions as well, but they were not as harmonically displeasing.

Later on we find the horrible transition of 37:22 and 39:25. I see no reason for why you would include Dance Valley in the mix. Just completely out of place.

I liked the Bassnectar tracks, but not so much the others. Wobbledose =\

Converting Vegetarians has absolutely no value in this mix.
http://echodub.co.uk/ <-- listen to the (free) compilations/albums available at the bottom. That's the kind of dubstep I prefer. Wobblebass is OK once in a while, and as stated I liked the Bassnectar tracks. But there was too much wobble in this mix for me to keep it in the playlist.

Posted by montana on Feb-15-2011 15:30:

the point of using dvt2001 in a dubstep mix which focuses on wobble is utilizing the fact the breakdown of the track uses a similar type of warped bass.

Wicked. I only wish it was a bit longer. Mine cuts off at 65:51, how long is it supposed to be? I dug the flow, the percussion, the mixing, the tunes. Everything rocked. Nice job.

Pretty cool. The first transition was the only one that bugged me. The lyrics and the style was pretty neat, kinda cool. It all made sense after I heard it. Nice effort.

I will listen to Lews and Rodri's set tomorrow hopefully.

thanks alot. ye it's supposed to be that long*, i faded out the last tune before it's proper ending since i didn't see the point since all those 32 bars before the ending is just more synth buzz and beats and mixout.

* actually, my original plan was to end on a pitch dark surgeon tune (shaper of the unknown) but i couldn't pull of the transition i had planned before hand and i didn't want to fuck up a perfect take so my gut instinct was "don't do it".

edit, your version cuts off the last minute, it's supposed to be 66:57, not 65:51

Posted by Domesticated on Feb-16-2011 13:05:

I've got a few of these I want to work through, but montana I listened to yours first. First off, I'll say that I'm really glad you got this genre. The mix could easily have ended up being an hour of Sander van Doorn et al. crap in the hands of the wrong person.

As Sand Leaper said; really excellent, very subtle. The intensity barely seemed to lift throughout, but then if you skip back and forth between the beginning and end, the difference is apparent. Some of the basslines were gorgeous, too. My favourite aspect was the melodic track you used at around 53 minutes. It wasn't particularly huge or uplifting, but you really increased its impact with so many melodically stark tracks beforehand. The last track was nice, too. It reminded me strangely of Many Reasons, by Joris Voorn. Mixing was tight. Great work.

Posted by montana on Feb-16-2011 13:21:

track at 53 is marzz - velvet star, a track i bought for this mix, great tune.

about the subtleness of the build, that was something i thought wouldn't come across as all of the tunes are fairly energetic but they all have their place. i had a m.o. of going on strong, taking it down and then building up again, and you have to be a good programmer to pull it off as if you fuck up and do bad type of mixing it just comes across as mindless bosh.

and ye, i thought i let lews get the proper type techtrance mix as i said, it's some of the first phase, some of the oliver lieb phase and the marco v phase.

thanks again for the kind words

Have you heard of Innergy? It's an oldish project with a similar sound to Marzz (edit: they're both on Detox Records, actually), with Comet Crashtest being my favourite track.

Posted by Mr Game+Watch on Feb-16-2011 14:47:

Thanks a lot for the comments on my mix, folks! Glad you all seemed to like it, and I highly appreciate the constructive criticism. I really learned a lot making the psytrance mix, all those songs I put on I discovered due to this, in fact the Jaia and Son Kite ones I loved. The beat-skipping and shitty sound quality was due to me having some issues with Virtual DJ and my mixer. Luckily, I got them fixed for next time (upgrading my VDJ version seemed to do the trick).

I've been going through the mixes one by one, so far I have gotten most of the way through Lews, and finished up Montana's, Teez's Sand Leaper's and Ziptnf's. But will eventually get around to every one posted.

Teez - I already told you on FB what I thought of course, it was a great mix with fuck-awesome beatmatching. Lots of classics in here, I probably would have done something similar had I got this genre.

Sand Leaper - I've only taken one listen so far, when you first posted it, so it's not fresh on my mind. What I remember was some very nice melodies and soundscapes but there were times when I felt one or two of the songs dragged a bit.

Ziptnf - I'm not a fan of hardstyle at all but I found myself bobbing my head to at least a few of the tracks. Like I said I'm not too familiar with the genre, so I don't know about whether or not you succeeded in terms of flow, but mixing was good.

Lews - Listened to it while at the gym Monday night, and it brought back a lot of memories of when I first got into trance around 98 or so... highly reminiscent of the Magik series with a couple of serious choons. I've always thought No Hesitation was more of a late-set track, so it was a bit out of place in your mix. But yeah, Tiesto-Sparkles (Transa mix)!!!!

Montana - Not being too familiar with the genre, I'll admit when I think of tech trance, I think of the Sander Van Doorn/Leon Bolier type stuff, so this wasn't what I expected at all... in fact, most of the first half of the mix seemed to be what I'd call straight-up mid 90's techno. But then the trancier elements slowly creep in to the mix as you get further along. It's got an interesting progression and the mixing was tight. Also the song at 28 min is holy shit wow!

On deck: Ian, Rodri Santos, Floyd. Very much looking forward to the disco, 2step and Detroit mixes... hope the people pull through!!! :P

Yes dvt2001 was an idea i had, i like to mix genres a lot in my sets but this wasn't dropped as should, just a snareroll or an fx would have made the track sit on the mix properly now the change is noticeable.

About track selection since i got no guideline i went for different dubstep subgenres, my favourite ones are the three first tracks, the rest are quite annoying if you ask me but i always thought dubstep was that kind of tracks so i was a bit scared of losing the trail.

Mixing is decent till the noisia track i agree on this that transition is completely fucked up the fact that the track is weird doesn't help either, that last part is just a drop of different styles that look like dubstep but that aren't dubstep really, like dvt2001 skrillex and converting vegetarians, i don't feel this is necessarily out of place just a creative track to finish a strange set.

14:10 transition... well i am not sure if this is harmonic or not, that pikes sound a bit offkey if you ask me but i don't find it specially annoying, i had a problem with this style, the software i use to key my tracks didn't work with this dubstep tracks, couldn't detect the bpm/key so i made this like a real set, i played the tracks i felt best suited in the moment.

About the intro... this is the part i'm more happy with to be honest, i searched for dubstep intro mixes but couldn't find any so i found this which looks like a little intro as i've said i like this 3 first tracks i think they fit fairly well.

This is the few things i've to explain, the rest is what you see

Downloading Sandleaper's ambient mix and Lews mix gonna listen tomorrow, next week i will listen the trihop mix and the other mixes i'vent listened yet.

That track brings me way back, because that happens to be the first psy album I ever heard! Nice work, man.

Another excellent mix here Tony, really well played. I can't add too much to what others have noted. I also really liked how you covered ground from different eras without resorting to any obvious material. I agree with Domesticated on his Innergy suggestion, Detox have put out some great tracks, one of my faves being Mindscape by Liquid Blue. There are also a few Detox duds though.

Also haven't much else to comment on here that hasn't already been said. I think this set could have been better given a bit more prep. time. You're definitely on the right track with your selections and chose some great punchy tracks but the mixing and flow definitely need some more work. Shame about the issues you were having with VirtualDJ.
I think mixing psytrance requires a certain boldness and if you're gonna play it safe which it sounded like to me, it tends to affect the flow. Sometimes taking a few risks with mixing can pay off but then again a lot of psy tracks can be a straight up pain in the ass to mix and place.
Anyway thanks for the mix, I'll probably look into picking up a few of the tracks you played here.

I had a very brief listen to Floyd's funky mix, I'll admit not really my bag but I'm going to have a proper listen and also to Rodri's Dubstep mix before I make any further comments. Also looking forward to hearing the mixes yet to be posted.
