Since we're discussing how much cdn bands make I've always wondered how well the guys in tragically hip have done. They've sold hundreds of thousands of albums in canada and can headline a festival that brings in big bands american bands like weezer to co-headline but don't you need an album that sells 3-5 million to get comfortably rich and they've never had that kind of international success.

They have made a good career in Canada, and they sell well even if they play a little too often. They are the antithesis of "rock stars" and are smart and have side projects producing independent Canadian youngsters.

They had a few tracks that got some play abroad, but the brunt of their work is appreciated here the most.

It is probably the band i've seen most, not because i love them...but because they play really often. You don't need to be a mega star to make a more than adequate living.

I can remember going to visit my sister in Kingston, and just chilling in a little bar having a few drinks...guess who shows up? yup...they played all night for free unannounced. It was epic.

Not everyone is about the money, but in certain cities the trag clean up because they sell well in Canada among a demographic that has disposable income. I can't fucking stand Blue Rodeo...but the situation is somewhat the same for them. Big fish in a small pond...but people go.

It makes me proud though that a Canadian is touring different countries playing House music. This in of itself is a great thing for the genre.

I don't think people hate him. They just find his comments snotty and immature...the comments about DJs. You have to understand that much of the dance music crowd comes from an older generation...and they probably see the inflow of new laptop DJs as an encroachment on the art of DJing. Supposedly I read somewhere that someone recently punched him in the head at one of his gigs. These types of activities add to the hype factor. In reality they may not even be true, which makes it even more hilarious.

I generally think he's a good thing for House because he exposes the younger generations to the genre.

There could be also some jealousy factor...what others display. A lot of hype is manufactured around commercial acts. The booking of the dome is one perfect example. You get kids and the wow factor already saying that "HOLY SHIT - HE SOLD OUT THE DOME" even before the event has occurred, even ignoring that the seats are even closed. There could also be a large population of DJs in the scene who work very hard but do not have the hype behind them (marketing power) that he has, so they become frustrated due to the lack of gigs and growth. I hope that these underground DJs do not get deterred by these activities. Ignore it.

Much of the commercial scene revolves around hype. This is a normal part of the business.

why do people hate him?

i'll give you the real answer. for people that have been listening to electronic music for a long time his stuff is a little ummmmm obnoxious, loud, and in your face without anything deep or more complex than a royale with cheese.

this does not make it a bad thing, think of deadmau5 like weed. he is a gateway drug (in the same sense as tiesto was for many of you.). he gets you hooked young without knowing what you were doing or about anything else out there. eventually you dig deeper and move on. those of us past that point don't get it anymore because, we are well...older...and don't do drugs like in the past.

i give the guy full credit for making something of himself. it is no small task. at the same time though for the seasoned vets who have been there before he came around, his music might not hit its mark.


we've all listened to cheesy shit at one time or another...most likely when young. even if i can't get into his tracks, he is an essential part of the business because the people he brings out will eventually support the more underground acts that you all love.

this is the nicest thing i will ever say about joel i don't know how to love. i'm italian and if i can't compare something to rocky 3 it sucks.

Personally, I'd like to hear some more stuff like 'Fifths', 'Finished Symphony', 'Everything Before' and 'HR 8938'. Ace tracks! If you were to produce more tracks like this, or spin some sets with more 'meaningful' tunes, you'll probably appeal more to this type of crowd. Maybe get some remixes going on with producers that are respected in the underground scene.

wasnt complaining about my finances. it was a breakdown of how it goes around here. people asked, i answered. who the fucks complaining? can any of you read? If its complaints you're after read pages 1-13 of this thread.

i just sit here and work away on all sorts of fun projects, and when im done those, i sit back and take enjoyment from putting a smile on someones face, or a tune in their head. Dont think for a second "isnt cool like..." or "sucks because" actually contributes to anything other than making yourself look like a complete fuckin idiot who lacks the means to do it the way they see fit.

and whats the deal with all this "scene" shit? fuck "the scene" dude. What the fuck is "the scene" anyway? this shit? can someone clear this up for me? because all i get is, "the scene" is a buncha forum kids, each claiming to know more about EDM, the music business, and everything else in life, than the next.

if ive learned one awesome fucking thing in a short time in my little rollercoaster ride is that when im doing my thing up there in front of a fuckton of people... im not looking at a fuckin "scene". Im looking at a buncha normal, decent people all sharing a positive experience listening to music and being part of the whole, DESPITE their own personal tastes or opinions on electronic music.

and of course everyones entitled to have their own tastes, i wont deny anyone of that... thats what mixes shit up thank god, otherwise we'd all still be listening to House Nation.

so if im not part of "your personal scene" then why the need to dredge my posts, articles, or anything else for that matter and regurgitate it back into this shit like it actually does anything positive for anyone?

TA is nothing near the representation of eventgoers, local or abroad, who enjoy music and good times, its just another scene im not a part of, im just here because the weight of the stupidity in here obviously has some sort of gravitational pull, and i do like to defend a claim or two when given the opportunnity.

That's bullshit and you know it. Joel used to come on here and was quite plesant before the success. As his success grew so did the amount of trash talking on here. The EDM world is just like the punk world and any other sub-culture in that it supports people up until the point that the wider world starts to take notice of them then the "real" fans turn on them. Why? Because we all like to think of ourselves as special and "underground" so the second someone hits mainstream success it's no longer special to know them since everyone does. It happens in every genre of music that isn't pop. Joel could come on here being the most humble and conciliatory poster to ever grace these boards and he'd still get ripped. It's what we do... it's what we're all about.

Sure what you said is true in part but I personally know quite a few ppl who were fans and supporters until they actually stood in front of mr mouse and were not given the time of day...

If I'm a celeb, and I'm standing in public, and a fan comes up to me, you're damn skippy that I'll at least put my bb away and listen to them for 30 seconds...

If I don't want to deal with the public, I'll find somewhere to get away...

And then there was the whole anti DJ thing...

Deadmou5 may be a good producer and showman, but Joel Zimmerman is just not a nice guy. And a lot of people just don't differentiate...

I've always said that I was happy that a local was making it big. I've even gone as far as to say that I enjoyed watching him work. I just wish he wasn't such a dick...
