Everyone that won't agree with System J is a cretin. It must be true if they don't write 5000 words on the subject.

Plenty of people have said they didn't like the film in this thread, Jay. Your reasoning was just especially stupid. But whatever helps you sleep at night.

Monday. I thought it was today, and was about to rush excitedly to the shops after work, but luckily had the foresight to double check.

It's out today on BluRay in the US... might pick it up... buuuut it might be $10 in a few months... Jew sense tingling!

Not hard to figure out who's been piratin' in this thread, haha.

I presume the 3DBR is also out then? Will def buy. Maybe they'll make a straight-to-3dtv sequel.

The Raid is a very Asian action film with a big emphasis on the choreography of the fight scenes, and the whole feel of the film is totally different.

Can someone please quote me? That way Jack can see my post some replied to as likely he couldn't see it. The films are totally different, still some people noticed they also had some things in common. If you would describe both movies in a few lines those things would be mentioned.

"Yesterday I saw Serbuan Maut (2011) aka The Raid: Redemption.

Made me think of Dredd 3D, did see some awesome and funny moves.
Still don't know which one I like better though, maybe says enough for both."

I didn't expect it to be such a fight film when reading about it by the way, but probably I still would have watched it.

Really fun movie! Felt like a 4-part comic series one-off that aspired to develop more. I loved the sets and the colours, even though I only saw it in 2D.

Too bad there almost certainly won't be another one unless there's a porn parody at some point. Hey.

Thanks a lot, ... maybe I should use Matt's approach, then I don't need to ask.

Out on DVD and Blu-Ray in the UK today. Bought two copies.

Just seen this for the first time since the cinema. My God, what a brilliant film. Anyone who thinks the acting is shit in this doesn't know a fucking thing. Lena Headey's performance as Ma-Ma in particular is incredible, such a subtle and unexpected way of playing that character. In another actress' hands those same lines of dialogue would shape a clichd bossy dominatrix female villain, but she completely undercuts her own character's forceful will with a nonchalant, almost weary sneer: here is a woman who's a bitch because she has to be, and perhaps doesn't even enjoy it anymore. That is acting.

She's a real cunt in Game of Thrones, as well.

Olivia Thirlby did really well as Anderson as well, I thought.

She's pretty cute too.

So Dredd 3D is currently killing it on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download:

http://uk.ign.com/articles/2013/01/...me-video-market

It might actually end up turning a profit after all, and so sequels aren't a lost hope just yet.

not to shit on your strawberries as such, but those figures are hardly "killing it".

Look at the other major films released around that time. Ted did double those figures in the first week alone. It will probably turn a profit in the end, but studio execs are very shortsighted when it comes to these things. It either has to be a smash to get a similar budget for the sequel, or they drastically pull back on the production values (see: dumb and dumberer for more details).

Did I actually call that?

Yeah, but Ted grossed half a billion dollars worldwide at the box office, more than 15 times what Dredd did. If we say a DVD/Blu Ray costs about $20, then Dredd has made 43% of its box office takings in DVD sales, whereas Ted only made 12% in the same amount of time. I'd say a film that tanked at the box office sitting at #1 across all formats is definitely killing it, certainly doing far better than it normally would. Dredd made about $33mil at the box office, and needs to make $50mil in total to break even, (IMDb figures) so it's now almost there. You're right in that it'll take a lot more than a film merely breaking even to persuade the studio to fork out another $50mil for a sequel, but Dredd has the feel of an instant cult classic, and even if we have to wait five years for a sequel, it could easily keep selling until it has made enough to justify a sequel.

A lot of cult classics tanked at the box office, (Bladerunner, The Thing) only to become hits years after the fact, and a lot of cult classics had brilliant sequels 5-10 years after the original (Alien, Night Of The Living Dead). The good thing about Dredd is you could easily resume the franchise in 5-10 years, because Karl Urban's chin is not going to change an awful lot, and every other character we've seen thus far is replaceable.

Resoundingly accurate.
