You got them all right, actually... well, except for José because you still said it in Spanish But, other than that, my brother got a real kick out of hearing you say his name (Fernando)

Haha, it gets most people by surprise

I was tired and switching back and forth from Portuguese, so my accent sounds thicker than usual there.

Yeah, especially "five" and "nineteen" to me sounded like when Stu is counting
,while I never heard him counting.

Apparently, such is my accent. Part Aussie, part Saffa, pah toothless Souf American Londoner.

Weirdest mockney ever

Uh no, too masculine.

Your folks really did turn up the classical guido dial to eleventy when they came up with that one!

I love your accent, I reckon it's awesome.

I'm glad you like it, I'm still learning to come to terms with it

Haha, totally! Though it's not an uncommon combo around here, as it was the name of the bloke who wrote "Girl from Ipanema". Truth be told, I didn't know it until my early twenties myself

That's interesting, at times your "R" in Portuguese sounds like Spanish "j" (in "Raimundo", for example) and at other times like Spanish "r" (in "Pedro"). Is that pretty standard?

It's the standard pronunciation in Brazil. Here's how it works: Unless the letter "r" is after a consonant (other than another "r") or between vowels, you pronounce it as a Spanish "r". If it's the last consonant in a word (specially verbs), feel free to drop it. Elsewhere, work that throat! The same "h" as in "happy" is the standard pronunciation in Brasilia, but you can have something closer to the French "R" or the Spanish "J" (or even the Dutch "G" depending on the region and/or speaker). Here are both (soft and "harsh") possibilities:

Rio de Janeiro, certo, errado, acreditar.

Cool.

I actually think French with alveolar R sounds kind of awesome. This scientist's old school Quebec accent is great (most people from Quebec use the "normal" French R these days): video

I read that there are some dialects of Brazilian Portuguese that use an approximant "R" like in English. That must sound interesting...

I like it too - there are loads of African immigrants here and they all speak like this. I'm seriously thinking of learning French from one of them

But young Quebecois speak with an uvular R, right?

It's so cute! It's common in the Midsouth (São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Goiás), but it only happens in the end of syllables/words (I've seen just a few old speakers use the approximant instead of the usual flap). It's not my native pronunciation, but this is what it sounds like:

Rio de Janeiro, certo, errado, acreditar, porta, porteira, portão

Yeah, I've never heard a young one use the alveolar.

Wow, it's the VERY same word in Portuguese (with an extra "oo" but still), and I still couldn't figure out what "bruh" was

Posted by Vector A on Oct-29-2013 03:36:

Lol, it's the ridiculous way he pronounces it that's to blame, even most Quebecois don't say the "a" like that or use such an absurdly strong uvular trill.
