Why have the makers of Wallace and Gromit decided to rebrand their latest film in the US so that it does not include the word “scientist”?

Whatever you call it, it’s feverishly imaginative and fantastically funny, with a monstrously high ratio of ho-hos to yo-ho-hos. But when The Pirates: Band of Misfits opens in US cinemas this month it will be missing something from its British release. Scientists.

There are no scenes deleted or characters excised, and each features a wonderfully off the wall portrayal of Charles Darwin as voiced by David Tennant (either the last but one Dr Who or perhaps the finest Hamlet of a generation depending on where you’re coming from). On both sides of the Atlantic it’s exactly the same Aardman hard act to follow, with dazzling animation, an ingeniously ludicrous plot and non-stop visual and verbal punning. It’s just that in the UK, where it was made, it’s called The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists.

David Tennant

cool

Are you familiar with Monads? In Haskell they are defined as datatypes. Monads are a general framework which can model different kinds of computation, including error handling, nondeterminism, and parsing with Haskell.

Cool Article on Wikibooks about Haskell/Monads

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Haskel...y_theory#Monads

quote:
Algebras/modules over a monad

Given that a monad in a bicategory ℬ is nothing but a monoid in a hom-category ℬ(a,a), it is natural to consider a module over this monoid: a module for a monad. This notion of module is more general than a module in a monoidal category, however, since it need not live in ℬ(a,a) but can be in ℬ(b,a) (for left modules) or ℬ(a,c) (for right modules).

http://nlab.mathforge.org/nlab/show/monad#Algebras

A free monad is a free object relative to a forgetful functor whose domain is a category of monads.

No, I don't know anything about monads. I gather that you have to know some category theory to really understand them, and I don't know any, so I haven't bothered. And I don't even have any significant experience with abstract algebra, so it seems like going at things backward to try to get into category theory first.

Even my little trivial uses of Haskell are pretty fun, though.

I never understood all the hype about this song, it has it's moments I really like and the video had that classy under budget look to it but it is the only song of his that is in 8bit.

Props where props are do.

Edit: I lie, I know what all the hype was about during the release of this song but I just couldn't relate to more than half of the song because I Piccadilly Palare was NOT silly slang between me and the boys in my gang.

w00t, w00t!

Next week I'm going to give my first series of voluntary lectures (I chose the subject and it's not part of the core curriculum)! I'm going to teach about language universals and Japanese language, for the next 3 months. It probably means I'm going to be way more inactive than usual but, I'm so stoked!

Yay

If you know some Spanish, you can easily read Portuguese (and knowing English must . Unfortunately, speaking Portuguese is an altogether different experience for most, I'm afraid, because we have way more sounds (it's like comparing French and Italian).

Here, about what I did last night: [[ LINK REMOVED ]]
- see how much you can understand

Edit: Damn it, I forgot the most awesome thing I did last night! We went to an Italian restaurant and clapped with pot lids to the sound of Funiculi Funicula. Never had this much fun in an restaurant before

YUMMY! YUMMY'n'COPPER! YUMMY YA! YUMMY! YUMMY'n'COPPER! YUMMY YA!
FUNICULI FUNICULA FUNICULI FUNICULA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YUMMY YUMMY YA! FUNICULI FUNICULA!!!

lol, nope, didn't get a word.

Then again, I wouldn't say I actually "know" Spanish either. I just took it in high school, which doesn't mean crap in the u.S.

Oh for fuck's sake! I've noticed a while ago that that the once-awesome show House is dying a painful death. But seeing the preview for next week really pissed me off. Wilson has cancer and House saves him or not. The fuck!? It's the cheapest trick in the book of shitty TV shows. If everything else fails mangle some emotional involvement from the viewers by making them fear for a beloved protagonist. Oh fuck right off.
