I love when you are just talking past a person, and the only things they pick up on are the exact wrong things you want conveyed.

Especially when you give them a list of possible reasons for something and they choose to investigate the least likely one.

It's amazing to see how everyday, more and more listings for programming jobs pop up, not asking for degrees, but experience.

It makes you wonder why we've spent so much on our education, and why some of us are just buried in debt from student loans.

What a scam, it reminds me of the housing bubble -- Everybody HAD TO HAVE a House.

Posted by Joss Weatherby on Jul-14-2013 07:20:

Its because experience counts for everything in programming. Most programmers start learning when they are 12 or even younger, and most have the core concepts mastered by the time they graduate high school if they are any good. I have yet to see a college curriculum that even comes close to teaching what you need to know to work in the industry for 80% of the jobs out there (that other 20% is mainly in research related fields, where a CSE degree is actually helpful).

Everyone I know has said "OMG ive learned so much in the last X months than I did in school!" when they get their first job (X usually being 6 months).

Actually in programming it does. The monetary value is not worth the paper when a major in CSE is not going to get you any more knowledge than you had when you started. The education is not education at that point, its just a unneeded and expensive hoop to jump through.

CSE courses are designed in the 4 year setting to be taught to people who basically have no programming experience. Those people are few and far between going into those courses, as again, most programmers start programming at a very young age. They will have 6-8 years of self-education (which usually means reading thick ass books on their own) before they even apply to school.

Any decent firm is going to not have some pencil pushing HR dickwad who has no programming experience looking just for a degree. They will have technical managers do the interviews and resume processing because they know that some of the best people in the industry have the least formal education.

irony indeed

the only thing youre good for is cool pictures of seattle

Posted by Joss Weatherby on Jul-14-2013 08:04:

Says the guy who doesn't care what programmers do, commenting on a website using a computer, all of which required thousands of programmers to get him to be able to say his inane stupid shit.

You can live without internet forums, but you can't live without programming. The entire Western lifestyle is dependent upon programming and the current Western lifestyle as we know it would not be the same without it. You encounter something that relies on programmers so many times throughout the day, yet you just take it for granted.

Probably something to do with not being on for months.

Don't wish children on them, they have a remarkable damper on fairly much everything from bank balance's to wits end and a few other things. About the only upside for me is mine are adopted Still doesn't spare me 'fun' stories from other women regaling me about how having them was the best thing ever with 5 hours of labour, then having 17 stitches in their minge trying to fit a grapefruit sized head through something a 1/20th of its circumference...
Oh they can laugh about it now, but they pee sometimes while doing it.

I don't regret my prime child bearing years being spent making money and being a bohemian wastrel.
