Very informative article about why windows 8 works the way it does. I honestly suspected as much. The desktop is great for normal (complex) windows things and the metro UI is great for when you're not in the mood to deal with complex things or you want things that work simply and easily or are a casual user.

Apparently according to the article the advent of metro means that microsoft feels it can actually make the desktop experience even more complex than it would otherwise as they don't have to worry as much about casual users.

So I finished my first informal interview with this company tonight. It sounds good... I might be doing 2-3 month visits to CZ and then working remotely the rest of the time from Seattle.

I pretty much have the position, they just need to figure out where I fit in their current plans.

Fucking. Wicked.

Yea hopefully it works out. I am not getting too excited till it's a done deal. I know this company and a lot of people at it, so I am cautiously optimistic.

Congrats man!
Czech Republic is pretty awesome

The only thing really preventing me from moving there full time and working is the pay difference. High end pay for game developers there is 17-25k a year, at least when I check through sites on salaries in CZ. You work there for 10 years and want to move back to the US and you'll have nothing to show for it.

I am trying to keep my options open by working part-time/contract/remote, whatever it ends up being.

I just got a message on OKCupid, apparently sent a week ago, from a gay guy, who lives in LA.

Not sure wtf is going on with that... LOL.

I hate American Football, its mostly commercials anyway.

Posted by Joss Weatherby on Feb-22-2014 22:28:

I like soccer, I love playing it, played it for years, and I'll play pick-up when I find it.

That being said I'd rather watch American football on TV over soccer any fucking day. Soccer on television is just insanely boring for some reason.

I think thats the thing too, American football, and baseball are pretty complex sports. If you don't have at least a majority of the positions filled the game doesn't work. So for me I can go find a pick-up game of soccer if I want my fix, if I want to play football its a LOT harder. Same with baseball. They are far more enjoyable to watch because of that.

Also the slower pace is just more enjoyable on TV.

I watched some ice hockey games at the Olympics on TV. Often couldn't even follow it in the replay.

I don't have problems following soccer on TV, actually I enjoy it more on TV that live.

Amazing games for our snow-less little country with 4 clean sweeps, 8 gold, 7 silver and 9 bronze, which puts us 5th, right behind U.S.A. and surprisingly in front of Germany.

The goal was Vancouver + 1 = 9 medals, so 24 is crazy. Not very likely that we gonna beat that next time.

Three solid years of work and the first alpha release of a piece of software I work on is on Friday. Of course random shit decides to start breaking now.

Computers follow instructions exactly and unambiguously. The inanimate code has not "decided" to start breaking now it is in fact doing exactly what you told it to do.

You've obviously never programmed on anything that requires integrating with shit you have no control over.

Muito obrigado

It depends on what variety of Portuguese you're talking about though. Which one did you hear?

Posted by Vector A on Mar-05-2014 19:03:

I like all the ones I've heard, but I think I like Portugal Portuguese the best.

I know, I'm weird, everyone else seems to prefer one of the Brazilian kinds...

I like listening to the Portuguese radio sometimes just to hear it. I can understand a little bit thanks to French and (basic) Spanish.

Posted by wotyzoid on Mar-05-2014 22:45:

Beyond weird. Portuguese people talk like they have a handful of black dicks in their mouth. It's disgusting. Grab an umbrella.

Haha, as Woty said, European Portuguese isn't exactly known as the sexiest variety out there, but I can see the appeal to an American - it's incredibly stress-timed with generalised vowel reduction (more so than in Brazilian Portuguese), much like English, but they tend to drop these reduced vowels altogether. That's why it gives us the impression that they're speaking with something stuck in their mouth.

Posted by Vector A on Mar-06-2014 02:58:

It sounds sexy to me.

Portuguese won't be for a while yet, though. First come Spanish (working on it) and Italian.

Posted by wotyzoid on Mar-06-2014 03:01:

I'd rather hear German and have my ears stuffed with shredded cheese than listen to that atrocious accent.
