So you would invest 20$ worth in the pursuit of a book but no book is worth 20$. How do you say what you say and not just kinda cancel yourself out. The universe has been kind.

I already have the book in eformat. But for me, eformat = shit. I want to be able to feel the book, smell it, put it on my shelf.

This. Anything that has re-read value for me gets a hardback if available.

my brother studied genetics.

genetic modification just like anything else in this society, is trial and error.

they try to modify the genes by using different chemicals to cause a permanent modification in the DNA of a cell or multiple cells.

when they get the results they are looking for, they label them.

they do not know anything about DNA, the consequences of the modifications, or how DNA is actually modified.

its trial and error. a method for a means.

then some guy writes an idealism view of how he thinks genetic modification works, and no one argues against him, because there is "positive results" in that field.

Believe me, in the scientific world there are plenty of opposing forces, but as far as the consequences for modification go, you're correct. To be sure that a substance does not cause harm in the long run, it needs to withstand the test of time. I took it up a while ago with my professor who's a specialist on immunology and he said, the following:

quote:
fixing mutant genes, raises the same problems as in the treatment of cancer..All the current epigenetic substances officially used in therapy (probably two or three..) are nonspecific and potentially toxic, targeting other genes as well.

The original question was: Why can't we block genes which we have proof predispose towards psychiatric illnesses.

Vaccines are not sentient. They have saved millions of lives. you were vaccinated. You can't disprove that you are alive because of them. Do you consider bring alive good ?

One of my friends is a teaching assistant in Bristol, one of the UK's most alternative and bohemian cities, and the schools are actually battling outbreaks of diseases that haven't been common for over a hundred years, all because the free-spirit parents are so distrustful of "Big Pharma" they refuse to give their kids routine vaccinations. I wonder how they'll feel about vaccinations when their kids die of tuberculosis.

there are no predisposed psychiatric illnesses.

mental illness is a label used for those who unwillingly reject conformity towards society.

ive seen and talked to people who doctors labelled "mentally ill"

they were far more understanding than given credit for, they simply had trouble fitting into the standards of conformity of society.

they passively rejected social norms without the ability to chose when or how.

and calling people such as those, 'mentally ill' only causes more detriment and slows down progress. the pills dont help either. they only try to suppress/catalyze their reactions or emotions.

Sorry, you're wrong. I say this as a person who's worked, interviewed and currently does his dissertation in depression and personality disorder.

I understand your view and why it would make sense to an uninformed person, however these pathologies enter the realm of disabilities to the point where said people cannot function at all anymore. And this is not only psychosis related, mostly neurosis.
