Dead.

Jenny, I need medical advice. Do you know anything about leg injuries? I'm too lazy to figure out the UK medical system right now

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Oct-28-2014 14:12:

Does your university not have its own doctor you can register with?

Posted by Lews on Oct-28-2014 14:32:

It's at times like this when I hate socialized medicine. My university is still processing my paperwork, which I handed in a month ago, so I can't talk to their staff until it's gone through. I called them up and they said they would try to process it this afternoon and have a doctor call me, but who the fuck knows when that will happen.

Since they're still processing my paperwork, I also don't have a NHS card, so I don't think I can go to a walk-in clinic - which doesn't matter since I can't walk right now, either.

Baby shit tastes a bit like Vegemite.

Ortho is not my specialty, but what exactly do you want to know? I'm back at work tomorrow actually, I can certainly talk to one of the surgeons and get some info.

That probably says more about how overloaded the university system is in this country than the healthcare system. Even when I've lived in shitty areas where the GPs are overrun, it's never taken more than 48 hours to get registered. Your uni is probably struggling from thousands of new students registering at once.

If it's remotely serious, I'm pretty sure that if you go into A&E at a hospital they'll see you without asking for any NHS card. Best to go in the afternoon though.

Is it because the prior night's crowd would have cleared out by then?

That and people waking up and deciding they're dying will generally rush in first thing in a morning.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Oct-28-2014 17:34:

I don't know about that. Afternoon and evening seem to be the busiest times (I suspect this has to do with people's work/school/life schedules), as well as weekends and right after the weekend/Mondays (no access to family docs or clinics on weekends). Also holidays (people eating big meals and drinking lots of alcohol will exacerabte all kinds of illnesses, and you might not be surprised at how desperate little lonely old ladies are for company). At least here, anyway.

Best bet is to go in the REALLY early hours of the morning, like before dawn.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Oct-28-2014 19:07:

Well, I'm sure you know much better than me so I'll defer to your judgement. I just figured everyone would be at work and out of harm's way in the afternoon, and that generally if you're sick you wake up and go "Right, I need help."

Posted by Silky Johnson on Oct-28-2014 19:11:

You underestimate how stupid people are though. The type of people who visit ERs and get sick more often are mostly of low socio-economic status. They don't use the emergency room for the right reasons in the first place.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Oct-28-2014 19:15:

There is a hospital near us that has an 'estimated waiting time' marquee outside of their ER. I always kind of chuckle to myself when I drive by, because 9 months of the year, it reads something like 10-12 minutes. But during summer vacation, it spikes to like 30-40 because everyone's outside getting themselves hurt.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Oct-28-2014 19:17:

Yup, lol. The hospital I work at serves a very large catchment area, and admissions drastically increase during cottage season, and always at the start of ski/snowboard season.

My brother is an asshole who has insurance but is too lazy to get a doctor so he just goes to the emergency room whenever he has a problem.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Oct-28-2014 19:27:

Fuck that. My ER copay is like $300. That'd cover like 100 beers and the resulting trip to the specialist I'd only have to shell out 20 for!

Everything is economics. Lagrangian taught me this.

Tell me more about this brother of yours.

Bought today a 1600 page comprehensive book on medicine on which I'm supposed to have a big exam on roughly a year from now. Spent like 2 hours reading 10 pages or so. Extremely hard to process, although it should be from stuff I've already learned from the past, I made the mistake of going straight to the neurology part out of sheer curiosity.

Finishing university in a couple of months, after 6 years, it makes me look back on how my life has changed. The truth of the matter is, that I will probably have to move abroad after everything and it sickens me to think about it. I have a girlfriend here, friends and a settled life, but due to economical destabilization the choice won't really be mine.

My friends will move as well, but thinking also about the girl right now...and at the fact that the last time I made a decision based on my SO, it ended up badly.

I can already imagine myself swaying through the night away from everything that I hold dear, in a fucking cross-country buss while listening to this:

I've discovered that no matter how much you change as a person, who you have around you, or where you are, the music always keeps the same memories alive.

Trying to find a parking spot today someone backed out of a place and turned into the street towards me, but like froze half way through getting to the other side (its a tiny street). I couldn't get past and I was about honk at them (which is a big deal in Seattle) when I realized I knew the person... I really wanted to honk angrily.

I did a U-turn at the end of the block and went back around and she had totally jacked the parking spot I wanted. Bitch.

The problem was that I didn't want to go crowd up the A&E if it's not a serious issue, so I wanted to talk to a nurse or something to get their opinion on what I should do.

After I talked on the phone with my school, they finally sped up my process, so that I could talk to someone, but by the time they could talk to me, I had to be at (placedrop) Parliament for an event, so I actually missed the call while I was going through security.

Not sure I should have gone to the event, but I really didn't want to miss it. Ended up taking some serious painkillers and forcing myself through it, but walking is still not something I'm happy about.

Jenny, I feel so old typing this, but I fucked some tendon or something up getting up this morning . I was just getting out of bed and I stretched my legs and something behind my knee went POP and suddenly lots and lots of pain. Took a few hours before I could actually put any weight on it at all and a few more before I could shuffle/limp around. Something directly behind my knee is swollen up, and I can neither stretch my leg out all the way nor bend it all the way.

Seems like it should be nothing, so I didn't actually want to bother anyone, but holy fuck it hurts and is inconvenient.

I dunno, that sounds pretty bad. I don't want to be alarmist, but you could have done something to your ACL or similar, which would be very bad news. Get that shit looked at as soon as possible, mate.

Your post sounds like a a bit of an emotional outpouring that probably deserves a more serious context than the Random Shit thread, but... is there no chance your girlfriend will be willing to move with you?

Yeah, I was hoping someone could tell me it was NOT my ACL, since that's what's giving me a bit of anxiety. If it's still fucked tomorrow, I'll either limp in to A&E or try my school's duty-nurse again.

I really didn't want to miss the opportunity to go to an event at Parliament
