Distributing new tracks/livesets

In addition to providing the new tracks and livesets as direct downloads from the site, I think it would be a very good idea to provide BitTorrent links for all the files.

The obvious benefit of this is that since BT is so damn easy to use that it would easily free up a lot of the site's bandwidth, as it works by P2P. I also find that BT downloads are often significantly quicker than DirectConnect downloads (download from multiple sources at once). The latest versions also offer bandwidth control. It's also relatively leech-proof (I believe).

The problem lies in the fact that those that use such software packages rarely need to use the download page on here to get their music...

...and the ones that do are technological newbies (for the most part) and don't want to install something extra just to get their music eaier...which is why I don't use anti-leech or some other similar garbage.

...the best thing ever were audiogalaxy links and MyPlay 'Copy to Locker' buttons.. but those days, sadly, are gone.

There's nothing wrong with technologies that encourage you not to leech, such as that employed by BitTorrent, but rather the annoyance comes from things that force you to share (e.g. FTPs using RATIO, and so on).

Maybe this kind of file distribution I suggested would be more suitable once more of the general public knows about it. So far, Joe Average will know the name of Kazaa, but probably won't have a clue that other such programs exist. In fact, Joe Average probably doesn't even know what P2P means.

I agree with Swamper's points entirely, but the reason I suggest BitTorrent was precisely because it is not an intrusive or attention-attracting program. A user clicks a BitTorrent link in a browser, it is opened, and the user is presented with a dialog asking where to save the file.. then it just downloads. No questions asked. That's no more complicated than a normal browser download at all. (I encourage you try to a few BT downloads if you see any, and form your own opinions about the program). Hell, it's even simpler than Audiogalaxy!

the only problem is getin enough bittorrent users to a) have their file and b) have their conections used to distribute these files

tranceaddict attracts loads of downloads, audiogalaxy was good as nearly all the ta's used it, there is the emc hub that people use, maybee there could be a way to add a song to their hub queue, but untill a load of the trancaddicts sign up for bittorrent i dont think it will work that well

This is true for any P2P network though, but in the case of BitTorrent, the tranceaddict webserver can act as an initial source for the download, before many TA users have the file. This would then allow the TA server to use less bandwidth as more TAs download the various files. Makes sense to me.

the idea its self makes sense, its just pursading people to use the software, p2p netowrking is very usefull so long as theres enough users with fast enough conections using it

i remember the AG links! they were awesome, cos the dl page was always full of people downloading. i'd get 50K download from someone on AG and that was good enough. and the MyPlay Locker links were awesomet too! i was on 56k then, so i did that so i could download at a later time....

too bad most of those tunes were deleted with me not logging into the account for a loooong time!..eh

I wonder if it works around routers/firewalls too because I'm behind at a university and my downloads/uploads are limited from most p2p programs (DC included). Unless I download from another person at the same universities or not, DC and other p2p programs do not work. However I think bittorrent works because I usually get downloads at 500kbps and uploads at 400kbps.

Maybe we should give it a try. The problem is that most people will close the window and the file won't be available for long.

BT does indeed allow multi-source downloading, which is why the transfer rates normally skyrocket .. for me, at least. I've had no trouble using it behind any firewalls so far. Besides, as it's open source, it could easily be recompiled to work for a specific firewall/router/proxy configuration.

And those people are bastards . Can't really help that, but at least the files are shared, even a moment, rather than not at all.

Yeah, i agree with that. But anti leech is a pain. It's unstable, and really restrictive...it isn't my thing, thats all , and for newbies, it can be a nightmare (not saying im a newbie , just saying i know a lot of people who are, who have trouble with their system)

I dont really have an opinion on BitTorrent. I suppose it could work. It's probably worth looking into it, from what you have said

Very good example, Phyera.

The point is that popular files get spread very quickly, far and wide. All it takes is a few users on fast connections and then everybody else can quickly benefit.

another update:
upload link wont be going up. i couldnt find a way to upload a torrent to twp ftps through a php or asp script. so just email the torrent to me until i find one or learn how to actually program. email address is on the site
