Breakbeat...drum&bass......(for the open minded ones...)

I havent heard a set from Oakenfold in almost a year or so but I remember when he used to spin breakbeat and everyone hated it.

Now I realise he was way before his time.
Breakbeat is the (next) big thing (atm) in electronica music...and after breakbeat drumm&bass will see the daylight to the progressive scene.

I wouldnt be surprised if gu 030 (if they don't go bankrupt )will be a drum&bass one...

What u think about breakbeat in general, is it growing on you?
Are u into it? Do u feel we progress?
breakbeat is very close to drum&bass...I'm not into drum&bass much but I can imagine I will be in a couple of years....

Posted by GrimReaper on Apr-10-2003 20:54:

I like both breakbeat and drum'n'bass, have liked them for years. In breakbeat i like many artists, Starecase, Burufunk, Hybrid of course,... In drum'n'bass i prefer the smooth, melodic jazzy style even like what's on LTJ Bukem's Progression Sessions & Logical Progression CDs. Breakbeat tunes are a great alternative to the "standard 4/4" tunes.

I agree with u and think breakbeat or even drum'n'bass might be coming stronger in the next few years. I surely hope so!

drum and bass will never be as big has prog or trance or breaks for that matter.....could you see people dancing that hard for that long of a period of time???? I dont think sooo. But as with every genre there will be breakthrough artist like Kosheen and the likes. But again ill say it will never get as big....BTW im a huge LTJ bukem fan but i also like some of ak1200's realy dirty sets.....

Posted by TranceSeeker on Apr-10-2003 21:22:

Never say never...
Breakbeat and drum&bass are very similar to eachother.
When the need is there for a new sound in the progressive scene drumm&bass can be introduced by dj's like digger's, burridge, phil K....Lavelle... Oakenfold (trendsetter) perhaps...
Who would have said gu023 will become a breakbeat masterpiece...?
If u look at the progression in music throughout the gu series...
De Vit with the more hardhouse (can I say rave) Oakenfold wit his trance masterpieces....progressive trance (sasha san frans)....more progressive (athens...hong kong...) darker prog (los angeles)....breakbeat! (023 lavelle)........what's next
Never say never...

breakbeat owns...ive been spinning it for over 3 years now....and i cant alot more attention/crowd spinnin that then local trance/house djs get....its huge in the southern usa, every single club around here plays it...california is a gettin a bigger scene too, the sky is the limit, breakbeat owns! trance blows!

peace!

pfft, youve never seen a good DnB set have you?
we jammed for oh, 14 hours of hardstep @ Ultra 5(Fuckin wicked)
even the mainstage had down times(between Live PA/the streets etc)
Drum and Bass is about to get a HUGE N.American hit. not the downtempo Jazzy stuff, HARD DIRTY FUCKING JUMP UP!
yes, I love it.

Ak is great when he gets dirty.
Kamanchi is fucking great.

I think if D&B somehow found its way into the mainstream of America it would do well. Most of today's hip-hop heads like that deep heavy bass of the songs so D&B would be a good next step for them.

I like D&B and I've been listening to it more just recently. I've finally found an artist that I like too: Kemal.

yeah i prefer the jazzy stuff.....anything on GLR or one of the sub labels LTJ produces some top notch tunes...

LTJ Bukem = Best music to smoke weed to IMO

I listen to drum & Bass occcasionally and remember the old D & B raves in the UK. loads of good djs and acts about still a lot from the old days. Check out if you can. DJ SS, Kenny Ken, DJ Marky, Fabio & Grooverider, Mickey Finn, Nicky Blackmarket, Bryan Gee, Dillinja, DJ Zinc, Ray Keith, Bad Company, Roni Size and the Bristol lot DJ Krust, DJ Die, MC Dynamite. Goldie (don't really dj much anymore), Digital, and Optical. There is fucking shitloads.

Usually at the big festivals in the UK say someone comes on in the trance arenas who I don't like someone say like Tall Paul or Judge Jules, I usually go to the Drum & Bass tent and theres always quite a wicked atmosphere in the drum & bass arenas.

i like breaks, but i dont like drumb and bass at all.

Posted by sektile on Apr-11-2003 01:50:

both breaks n dnb rock hard... even sum o that oldschool jungle flava still owns..

best part of drum n bass is how varied it is truly. you get this dark in-your-face hard dnb, then this funky loungey ltj bukem style, even trancier stuff ala John B etc.

as for my fav artists checkk the sig

Breaks are cool and all, but I disagree about it being the next big thing. I've hardly heard any successful breakbeat tracks so far this year. I myself think that this year is the return of the uplifting sound. But during the summer, who knows, breaks could spring up and take over

I dance harder to techno and trance than to drum'n'bass: dnb is so fast that in a 180 BPM tune, either you dance as if it were at 90 BPM or you just make quick moves. Nevertheless, trance/techno gives you more time to make any moves or even hop, so it's easier to get sweaty

Anyway, I like my dnb as tranzier as possible

Man, trancy dnb sounds soooo cheesy!!!!!!!!!!

Dark stuff is where its at. The new j magik cd is fricking awsome (not the house one) Once again ill recommend ryme tyme - payback part 2.

DnB doesn't need to get any bigger than it is, it does just fine as it is. Any bigger and it will really start to suck like trance.

Posted by Raptor on Apr-11-2003 05:53:

i doubt dnb will ever go with GU, only cause the BPM difference is too crazy. if you listen to the cds most of tracks are spun around 125-135, while dnb is 190 bpm it would be too crazy of a change, but you never know.

Posted by InfiniteSquare on Apr-11-2003 05:57:

breaks are wikkid

most drum n bass sucks!

Posted by sifntj0r on Apr-11-2003 07:58:

dnb can never really become fully mainstream, i just think its sound is too complex and hard for a traditional mainstream sound that appeals to 'everyone'.

however, breaks are a different issue. they are the white man's answer to hip-hop. they will (and in some ways already are) become very big, and will continue to get bigger.

dnb > breaks

well...back on the oakie topic...

look into what he has always played. his GU Oslo had much more of a focus on DnB, as that(to a certain degree) was what he was interested in prior to his trance days. it was never the distinct DnB most TAs hate today, it def had more of a prog leaning.

people have always hated Oakenfold for not sticking to the 98 99 trance style, but thats because it was new and fresh when he was playing it, he has moved on. i just remember seeing Oakie in 2001 and i was honestly the only person dancing to PMT - Gyromancer. it was horseshit, but most people cant dance to something unless the beat doesnt change- and that makes the worst dance music in my opinion.

as far as popularity, i think breaks will always be more popular in the trance community, just because of the often found similarities between the two genres.

and back to Oakie, many say his trance days were the best, but he was playing breaks back then too and no one noticed. Gus gus - Purple (sasha vs. the light) anyone? that was my fav track on tranceport. and like most of the tracks on that cd it was released 97 98 way before most people found that cd|

haha, this reminds me of a quote i read in a review of Sashas GU013:
'electronic dance music is soul music for white people.'

i think thats quite appropriate|

I have certainly entered the breakbeat route lately, i also been tuning into alot of alternative music.

Tech house is the style i been hounding lately. Burridge, etc.

I would just like to point out that I am a member of TranceAddict so that I can be closed minded, because its TranceAddict. So whether or not in everyday life I am open minded, who cares. I am here to be close minded, besides its a common known fact that everything sucks in comparison to Trance.

i cant predict how the popularity of breaks nor d'n'b is gonna change w/in the next couple of yrs but, personally, i dont think either will become mainstream music. in terms of popularity w/in the EDM scene, breaks seems to be getting acknowledged more. seems like theres a recent trend of like electro break artists like Infusion & Evil Nine more so than the likes of Hybrid if u get the gist.

oddly enough, i was first introduced to EDM through DnB and i loathed it then. first EDM party i went to was DnB party. i went home w/ a headache lol.... im still not too partial about it. though i like some dieslboy stuff, some aphrodite stuff, some global communication stuff. and kosheen too i guess! but for me to fully enjoy it, i need to be like in the right mood cuz too much of it just gives me awful headaches.

as for breaks, long live breakbeat! and death to Icey and all the other producers who's idea of quality breaks = sped up HHC sounding songs w/ kicks.
