How old is too old to start DJing?

I would love nothing more then to start djing on a regular basis.
Like a lot of us, I listen to music most of my day and i think i would have a good feel for it. But how old is too old to start up?
Moneys a bitch, and so is motivation. I dont wanna drop a few grand only to sell my shit off a bit later.

basically how long does it take to know the ropes of djing, and is it really worth all the effort?

I only write this cause im 21 now and hate the fact that ive never touched a pair of tables. Going to special events pisses me off even more (ie Picotto) cause i would kill for a chance to spin in front of a small crowd. who knows maybe something good would come outta this?

Oh and this summer im thinking of starting to get something.

WHAT do u recommend

Tech 1200's
or
CDJ-1000's

as long as you still like the music and you feel good doing it, you are never too old for it.

Posted by club4life on Apr-14-2003 00:50:

I'm 23 and I just picked it up last year. I do wish I would have got into it earlier though, I feel like I'm behind other DJ's that are my age.

Just do it . . .

Posted by sebjr on Apr-14-2003 00:58:

geez dude, i aint even dignifying that with a response (altho ive thought about it myself too!)

do it!!!

its all about the music

you are the only person that can truly say it's worth it for you...

i personally don't think it matters when you start.

if you love it that's all that matters. whether you get booked to play out a lot or not.

Posted by Vizay on Apr-14-2003 01:09:

you can never be to old to start spin...of course you have a litte advantage if you start spin when your'e like 14 years old and stuff like that but if you put good effort and time into it you can get good in a year...

I'm born 85 (going 18 this year) and I've played for like 9 months now and I have my first gig 3:rd may so if you train much you can get gig's and get good pretty fast

but remember...the most important thing is that you think it's fun all the way

I got into it May of 2002 and and I was 19 when I first started. It took me a while to get my shit(saving money) and when I did I was 19. I do wish I started at an earlier age, but not all of us are blessed with a rich family. 21???? You're not old at all man, I thought you were gonna say like 40. And it is true, you're never too old for music. Shit, I used to drive into the parking lot at my highschool and there was this 60 year old teacher who monitored the lot in the mornings. He would always come stand by my car and listen to my tunes when I got to school, quite funny actually. he loved it tho, and if he wanted to start spinning I'd tell him "more power to you man". No one is too old for music.

peace,

Steve

If you wanna do it for yourself its never too late. If you wanna do it for cash you could still pull it off if you know people hehe

I got my first decks about 8 months ago, age 28. If i'm too old, so what? then again, I have no amibtions to play to a crowd. I enjoy getting home after a really bad day, a couple of beers and playing my favourite tunes. If i was trying to make a career, then i'd be a little late.

depends on what you wish to get out of djing, and where you plan to take it. if you're to do it purely for the bliss of the music and purely for the enjoyment, as a hobby, *shrug* what has age to do with preventing you from that? if ur doin it for urself, there's no problemo dude. i'm 21 and i got my decks bout 3 months ago n luvin every second i'm on them. if that's not enough of a reward, i dunno what is

you only live life once...might as well do whatever makes you happy, no matter how old you are

Posted by chesco on Apr-14-2003 09:41:

17. i did it for a couple of years previous to that, but i had no concept of mixing then. i didn't know what beat matching was. quite funny actually. cos i still don't.

After 17 tho' i learned a bit better.

Honestly tho', dj'ing is a career for life. or until you go deaf, which ever comes first.

I agree, if you like it and you can do it, start djing and enjoy!

its not about what others think its about what u want.

Posted by Nabistai on Apr-14-2003 17:44:

I started when I just turned 17 and I thought that I started too late lol (because I know a local dj who is like 19 and has played in some mayor (if not THE major) clubs around here)

21 is most definately too old... don't waste your time.

I'm just kidding 21 isn't old, and you can get a feel for it pretty quick.

If I were you and I know what I know right now, I would get two 1200's and a mixer with good eq's. However, from personal experience, especially when starting out, I find that cd's are much much easier to learn with. Being able to cue without difficulty, and especially being able to see a readout of what pitch you are at is extremely helpful. It may not seem that big of a deal to you, but I think most people would agree that it makes mixing a lot easier.

I have two technics 1200's and two pioneer cdj-100's. I think you should buy a pair of techs, but if you want to go with cd's (since you're in Toronto) and you don't want to shell out for the 1000's, I would sell you my 100's if you want them. I find that I don't really use them that much anymore, and I need a bit more money for a laptop. You could of course demo the cd players at my house.

I hope this post didn't come out sounding like a sales pitch... I honestly think you should go with vinyl, yet I really like the 100's (the added flexibility it brings to one's setup is great), but the laptop is more important right now (university very soon!). I'm not officially selling my cd-players (I don't mind having them ), but when the opportunity arises for someone near me to buy them, I'll offer. They're in too good shape to throw up on ebay, and I want the person buying them to be able to try them out, see the type of condition I keep them in, and make sure they like them.

No matter what you do, good luck. If you love the music, it'll be worth it in the end.

For Every X-perience there's a tune!!! Every day no matter how old you are you learn new things. Personally I like sets in which a dj tells a kind of story!!!! There are millions of peepz who can mix two tracks but do it in a kind of story way and you got my attention. No matter how old or young you are. So just X-press your feeling

THAT'S MY OPINION GOOD LUCK!!!

Posted by Tiger777 on Apr-16-2003 00:28:

The younger you begin, the easier it'll go for you to learn the basics. But it is true, it's never too late. I thoughed, when I begon (4 months ago now), maybe I'm alrdy a little to old(17) to start with DJing, cuz I heard lots of ppl started at 14yrs. Now I know thats not true at ALL.
But, I bought 1 TT and I alrdy had a CD player. I started with that. I really like doing what I'm doing, I practised alot (up to 1h30 a day, every day) and now I think i'm kinda good in the basics now. And, now I'm saving up for a second TT.
But I still think, the younger, the better.

Dancing Dude

i started when i was 15, and iam still 15 now

got tons of time to get better and evolve my style n shit, shame at 15, there'z not much money

there'z no age limit in dj'ing, live or just bed room dj'ing

giv it ago!!! u wont regret

Posted by Psylence on Apr-16-2003 15:13:

I started with cdj-1000's last year, when I was 24 Have since added in a Denon DJ151 Turntable (mostly for ripping my vinyl to wav's)..

You are never too old to start! I have serious ADD when it comes to maintaining hobbies.. but this one has been easy. Nothing better after a shit day of work then coming home and pounding out some tunes.. I'm sure my neighbors would agree! lol

Posted by Tiger777 on Apr-19-2003 00:48:

or not, since I bought my stuff, they have been complaining almost every day
