well, what did you started with? and was it new or second or maybe 3th hand?

I started out with a numark bluedog mixer and the shittiest purple numark decks.

My brother then managed to get me an allen and heath 62 mixer in place of the numark one. needless to say that was a big jump. Got a set of vestax pdx-2000 for my 17th birthday.


All of which have now been sold. I just use my brothers set up.

If you are serious about dj'ing, buy the best. save up for a long time, get a set of technics, and a decent mid priced mixer. This way you don't have to spend more later on as there is no need to upgrade. And if you decide you don't like dj'ing you will get much the same as what you payed for them when you sell them.

i've tought about that.. but i'll rather start with a cheaper but functional set.. i've started a fiew months ago with mp3 mixing.. i'm doing alright but is't just no fun.., i don't enjoy it.. about a week ago i was .. forgot his name, a friend of a friend of my cousin.. () he had this nice little set standing in his room..(no idea what kind of mixers and decks ) he was busy when we came along, well.. he went of talking to my cousin and his friend, so i tought why not and i grapt the headphone and tryed..(sounded pretty crappy at first but in the end it was going a little bit better) only could try for about 15 min but it sure was fun..

thats why im thinking of getting my own set, i don't want a real expensive one..(not to start with) why not, maybe i get borred of it after just a fiew weeks, or maybe i just don't have enough talent and my skills dont improve any furter after XX weeks. and if i decide that i want a better set i can keep practising while saving money for new decks, sale (?) the old one's is not going to be a problem, know lots of ppl that are thinking of buying there onw set.. ore might be intrested in the future..

i have to think about it agian.. not sure yet..

i started with.....2 pioneer cdj 100, 1 djm 300 and my friends Numark CDN 900

Two Technics 1210 mkII's and a crappy Vestax PMC-003A. I hate Vestax.

two gemini cdj-10's and a 50 dollar gemini scratch mixer.....

When I started, I went low end. BIG MISTAKE! If you enjoy DJ'ing at all, don't bother with cheap stuff. It gets more and more addicting, and you will want better equipment. That's a promise! In the end, here's what I have ...

2 Technics 1200's
2 American Audio Pro Scratch 2 CD decks (sweet jeebus they are fun to use! I would rather have the American Audio Velocity CD player, but just don't have 1000 bones laying around)
1 Vestax PCV-275
1 D-Vinyl2020 (Nearly the same thing as Stanton Final Scratch)
1 HP Laptop
1 Roland D2 Groovebox (fun and a nice change of pace)
1 Kaoss 2 Pad
Records and CD's galore!

Originally I started with 2 crappy gemini tables, and a mixer that wasn't fit to be a door stop. Those got cast aside rather quickly, and the upgrade madness began Do yourself a favor, if you enjoy DJ'ing at all, spend the money. You won't regret it! If you truly love it, then possibly add CD decks. I wouldn't do that at first though. They are much harder to resell if you decide not to pursue mixing. Just my 2 cents

I bought a set of a friend,who wanted to quit with his drive-in show.
Didnt knew much about DJing back then (what was good or bad gear) soI just bought it.

It was �400,- and contained:

-Flightcase with everything in it
-Skytec TEC2400 Double CD player
-Skytronic PA2100 amp (100watt)
-Really crappy old mixer,forgot the name,anyway I sold it for 20
-Some nameless headphone

Still have the headphones (they work,they go loud,so why replace them ), and also still have the case,the amp,and the double CD deck.
Only got 2 more TT's and a Gemini PS626i mixer.

I'm verry happy with the deal I made,cuz only that CDplayer is even �500 euro new

1. A VMX300 + 1 pioneer cdj100

the I connected my portable cd-player to the 2nd channel of the mixer
2. A second cdj100
3. a stanton st90

Well i think what you are saying is correct, he might get bored after a few weeks or something comes up and he doesnt want to continue anymore, now he has to deal with selling his tables because he bought Technics for example, dont get me wrong they are very easy to sell but...

i first bought my mixer and mixed on the computer with MP3s and then 1 day i went to my friends house and played around with his setup and i knew from that day, that i wanted my own tables.

I didnt have a lot of money so i just bought the numark 1520's.
i am still practicing with these 1520s but my 1200s are in the MAIL!@#!

i cant fking wait, if you want to start with a low cost table, you should go with a MID-Table for example Numark T-100, these are really good tables to start with, you wouldn't want to change them for a long long time.

as far as a mixer goes , all you need is a 2 channel mixer that has EQs and maybe kills , that's all you need to start with, because you need to practice on your beatmatching skills

I AM starting, baught a JB Q20 (DONT EVER BUY THIS!) and a cheap mixer from some cheap brand no1 has ever heard about. But, i almost have enuf money to buy myself the Stanton ST90 as a 2nd TT. After that, I'm going for a new mixer.

Heh, when I started out, I bought 2 Numark 1520 direct drive tables and a Numark DM1001x 2 channel mixer for $400 USD. Now I have these sweet.......... Oh wait, Damn, I still have all my crappy stuff.

I need some extra advice though. I have saved just enough cash to either snag 2 1200's, or get myself a nice djm-500 mixer. What do you guys feel would be more important to upgrade first? A new mixer would definately make my mixes sound cooler, but on the other hand, new tables would tighten up my transitions and help me make more steady and reliable mixes.

Any thoughts?

All of the above was brand new, and I didn't have to pay any shipping.

Also, between November and now, I've purchased exactly 87 vinyls so far. I have a list of them right here, along with the retailer I bought each from. I've spent exactly $947.60 total on vinyls. Shipping costs total about $152.08, so without those I've spent $795.52 on the actual vinyls. Or roughly $9.14 each on average.

I usually order my equipment from Musician's Friend and most of my vinyls come from Groovetech and DanceGrooves.

i think you should go with the tables unless you are satisfied with what you got, because you can do smooth mixes with your numark mixer as long as you dont have to fix the pitch every 2 secs

i have those tables and its a pain to do transitions

i started with a mixer i borrowed from a friend, 5 channels, no eq (60$). Turntable from my mom (1984 built), and my regular HiFi no-pitch CD-player...
bought a CD-player with pitch control next, then a new mixer, then a Technics, another new mixer, and that's where I'm at now (9 years later)

first started with :2x sony discmans(thats right no pitch control) and a shitty KAM mixer.

now got 2x technics and a djm500(pioneer)

TTS - Technics 1200 MK3D - One of them was brand new, purchased from musicgoround. They are a reseller of second hand stuff, but I got lucky with it, as it was sold to them new by a business owner who went out of business and I bought it for only $299 (www.musicgoround.com). THe second one was second hand, and I got it for 375 US dollars from swell records (record shop on Phoenix)

Mixer - Pyramid Mixer (3 channel)... forgot the model, but it was a piece of shiet (sound quality wise), but it did serve its purpose for the time being, as I paid only $65.

Headphones - Sony MDRV700 $94 @ local audio store (sam ash)

Needles - I started w Stanton Al500IIs.. cheapest needles you can get, $30 each.

Speakers - Numark M1 Powered speakers. I got lucky with these when I found them at a pawn shop, and bought them for only $25. A lot of times pawn shops are really good places to get gear, because they pay very, very little (about %15 percent of value), they many times dont know true value, so you can easily take advantage of that.

I really didnt buy everything at once, cause I just didnt have the cash. But besides that, i spent months looking for a good deal on Technics 1200s.. first got the one deck at musicgoround and then later got the other MK3. It actually hurt me the fact that I got an Mk3 in stead of MK2, because they are very hard to find, at least for a reasonable price. So i had to wait a few months in between before i finally got the secon hand one through swell records (perfect condition).


So what was i doing while getting my equipment? Well I actually used mix through my computer using two sound cards and a software called Mixvibes. It helped me alot for the concept of mixing (beatmatching, arrangement, etc). Once I got my gear, it did not take me long to pick up on it.


Robin, to answer your question... As far as the decks are concerned, I recommend to get good ones to start off with, specifically the Turntables, because sometimes someone may be selling some for a great price, and you may not have the cash if youve spent your money on some other equipment. In fact, out of all the equipment I started with, the Technics 1200s are the only things that Im still using, everything else ive upgreaded. I feel that the cheap stuff did serve its purpose though.
For the mixer, I would recommend to get something decent... not completely horrible (ei, like the pyramid i bought), but like a Gemini 626 pro, its only $100. You can start with cheap needles, its not that important, since you will only be starting. Now for headphones, I would advise getting good ones, cause it can be a pain in the ass beatmatching with shitty headphones, but thats just my opinion. Ive known some ppl to start with shitty ones. Oh btw: also buy whatever will be necessary in the beginning. For instance, if you decide to spin vinyl, obviously buy tts, dont get 2 tts and cd players (that extra money you can you use for something else). You can later add cd players to your setup (for those hard to find tracks), as I did.

I started with a Numark DJ in a box set. At the time I bought it I had no idea where I wanted to take the dj'ing, I just wanted to shed some of the mystery about it by trying it out for myself. Now, almost 2 1/2 years later I've only managed to replace one of my turntables with a Stanton Str8-80 along with newer cartridges & my second set of Sony V700s. I replaced the old mixer with a Gemini BPM 150 (hey, it was cheap as fuck). Eventually my master output went on it so now I have to run a line from my first mixer's rec. out jack to my old mixer's line in (where I have the gain turned up to normalize the sound levels). I really really need some brand new equipment which goes without saying. I'd love to have two technics m3ds, a pioneer djm 500 mixer, and new cartridges (still unsure about which ones).

I started with some really crappy belt drive tables(can't even remember the name of them) a really crappy mixer that didn't really work, and some headphones that I had layin around the house. I then later upgraged to a Numark DM1001x mixer. Then I bought the Techs M3D's and then later upgraded the mixer again to a Numark Matrix 3. Happy with the setup I have now, still want a new mixer and a CDJ.

LOL I have the same needles too.. they are indeed shitty. I dont know why they cost so much? Probably cause they include 4 stylus in the pack.
Anyhow back to subject...

I started with 2nd-hand Soundlabs (belt-drive) and a Numark mixer. After a year 1 bought:

2 x Gemini XL 500 II with Stanton elements
1 x Dateq XTC

I still got this setup. After the summer I get myself some Pioneer CD-players and a new mixer.

i begun with :

2 x Gemini XL 500 II with Stanton elements
and with a numark 3100 mixer

and i am a happy man

1 numark blue dog
2 numark tt-1700




selled all that crap and now i have 2 sl-1200 with a VMX-300
