Metal Gear Solid 2: WTF? Help me out here...

WARNING: SPOILERS!! dont read on unless youve beaten the game or just dont care

Ok I just beat MGS2 and I cant figure out the ending... probably because its 6:30 am, and I have no memory card so I had to stay up all night and beat it in one sitting. The colonel is one of the patriots right? Or an AI system designed to carry out their needs, operating inside GW? Or is he like an alien or something... he certainly looks like one at certain times, and said something like "we arent exactly what you call human." Then at the very end after all the credits, you hear Otacon talking to snake, about how he discovered the list of the Patriots, how one was "one of our biggest contributors," and that they all died 100 years ago?

And then theres Rose... she was basically spying on him, then claimed to still love him, then basically threw all that aside and sided with the colonel in that long conversation before the final fight with solidus... Then afterwards they make up and he decides to live on with her? Was all of the things she did and said just put into his head or something?

Help me figure this one out, its 7am and im about to die of exhustion. I loved this game, the story was great up until the end when it kind of got just too weird, maybe its just because Im wasted and cant comprehend it. So help me out here. Amazing game, btw

Arrow

The colonel is one of the patriots right? Or an AI system designed to carry out their needs, operating inside GW? Or is he like an alien or something Konami is known to do this with their games. All these questions that youve asked will be answered in Metal Gear Solid 3 (which is currently being developed over seas). As for Rose, who knows if she was spying on him (Raidon). In order for your questions to be answered, you have to wait until Metal Gear Solid 3 releases.

Side note: You might want to buy a memory card so you dont stay up until 6:30am. trying to beat a videogame.

Yes the colonel is AI. It's probably most apparent when he starts saying all that weird shit to you over codec, because that's when the virus is kicking in.
The patriots thing noone really knows about. I'm thinking that they are an illuminati type group that uses codenames such as Abe Lincon, or George Washington to conseal their real identity. But like Afro said, you'll have to wait and see.
Rose was most likely a spy as well, but there is also speculation that she never really had any involvement with Raiden, but Raiden was made to believe (brainwashing) that they had.

When you begin to play MGS 3 a lot more will be clear.

Ahh, I was unaware there was a 3rd game in the works... I guess that helps explain a lot.

Hideo Kojima said Metal Gear 2 would be his last project in an interview previewing MGS2.
but THANFULLY, he has now said he will lead Metal Gear 3, although i don't know if he stated this would (again) be his last project.

all i can say is praise the lord. Kojima is one of the best out there

LOL! but yeah, the clonel is an AI system or just Raiden's own imagination. either way, he has some connection to the patriots. as to the possibility of of the patriots being dead 100 yrs ago i think of them as something like the masons. a secret society that has people still continuing their ideals and beliefs. Metal Gear solid 3: The Patriots is supposed to answer alot of questions. so until then, all guesses are the only bet.

actually they are two completely different. both are stealth, but splinter cell is much different and harder.

So I finally played this again after a few years. I remember being totally confused by it, but now all seems clear and I can fully appreciate this game. Its not as shitty as I initially rated it, still I prefer MGS3 and MGS.

Anyone knows what's the difference between MGS2 and MGS2:substance ? i played both and didn't see it

Just the addition of VR missions and stuff.

MGS was followed up by MGS: VR Missions (MGS Integral in Japan)

MGS2 -> MGS2: Substance

MGS3 -> MGS3: Subsistence, which added online play

Substance is a real word, but what the fuck is a Subsistence? I think Kojima started to run out of ideas at that point, not applying that to Portable Ops, that's for sure though.

that's what i've been wondering myself, I thought it was my vocabulary that was lacking. Anyways i'd love to get my hands on subsistence, is that multiplayer online ? or 2 console network ?

lol you guys have never heard that word before?

subsistence = a means of surviving

example: I can't subsist on donuts alone...I need coffee too.

Subsistence is multiplayer online. When it was first released it was $30 USD brand new, got it at Best Buy. What's REALLY cool is that the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake are included on the 2nd disc. The first Metal Gear had been released before on the NES but this is the 1st time that the real Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake has even seen a US release, since Metal Gear: Snake's Revenge is a totally different game and non-canon to the storyline. MG2 Solid Snake is the true sequel to Metal Gear.

This is personal favorite MGS cover art.
