I used to read fantasy novels when i was young (like 12), and i don't remember much of them. I read Tolkiens LOTR trilogy and the hobbit, and also some i robert jordans series.

Now a days i don't get that much time to read, but when i do, i love to read stuff from thomas harris (the red dragon, silence of the lambs and hannibal, they're SO much better than the movies), dean koontz and stephen king. I guess i love crime and supenatural stories Anyone else that like these genres?

Peace

JRR TOLKIEN!!!!! ALLLL THEEE WAAYAYYYYAYAYAYAYAYAAYYYYY IS THE BEEESSTTTT EEVVVVEEERRR.... hehe, sorry bout the caps, but im sorry to break it to you guys, but Robert Jordans and George R martins, and Tom Clancy's works are childs play compared to works like the silmarilion and the lord of the rings trilogy and the unfinished tales and of course the hobbit! .. ahhhhhhhhh! i cant wait for the movie to come out!!

Posted by Phaze on Jun-04-2001 00:35:

bah...i think some of the authors out there are on the same level as Tolkien....jordan is, imo...his series is bad ass...i've read every book like 3 times now

Posted by u4ea:[soulstar] on Jun-04-2001 00:45:

These are the ones I've read:

Armor - Jon Steakley (epic sci-fi, starship troopers, i think, ripped the book's ideas of bugs and ants)
The Vampire Chronicles - Ann Rice (some are ok, writing bland)

The books below are extensions of roleplaying games:

The Dragonlance Epic fantasy series
[Preludes]
Darkness and Light
Kendermore
Brothers Majere
[Heroes]
The Legend of Huma
Stormblade
Weasel's Luck
[Heroes II]
Kaz, the Minotaur
Galen: Beknighted
[Preludes II]
Riverwind, and the Plainsman
Tanis: The Shadow Years

[unknown series]
The Knights of The Black Rose

Ravenloft Series
Vampire of the Mists
Black Knight of The Rose

Forgotten Realms Sieres
Pool of Radiance
Night Parade
Parched Sea
Elfshadow
Red Magic
And tons more I can't remember off the top of my head

SpellJammer Series
Beyond the Moons
Into the Void
The Maelstrom's Eye
The Radiant Dragon
The Broken Sphere
The Ultimate Helm

Dark Sun Series
Crimson Legion
The Verdant Passage
Amber, the Enchantress

And ALL OF ROBOTECH SERIES FROM THE ZENTRAEDI TO ROBOTECH MASTERS, TO THE INVID

And lots more fantasy and sci-fi.

Ok enough, my fingas starting to hurt.

The movie Part I is coming out near end of DECEMBER!! Lord of the Rings looks real good, but some actor casting I find questionable.

JRR Tolkien IS not the best, his genre is one of the best classics, epic fantasy.

And you cant compare Tom Clancy to JRR Tolkien, they're not in the same ballpark, not in the same sport, not EVEN friggin in the same league.

Exclamation

umm, you must be on crack man.. jordan is good, but in time , youll begin to see that he is really nothign compared to the master of fantasy, tolkien. tolkien started it all, and i doubt therell ever be anybody like him again.. he made up over 7 differen languages, think of that, i dont see robert jordan making up 'trolloc' or 'forsaken' languages .. no comparison..and ive read that set like a million times.. like a year ago i stoped reading them and whent on to other books.

even though this book is out of hte fantasy category, Catcher in the Rye hsa to be one of my favorite books..that book is like.. so fucking awesome.

well tiem for hw, im outa here.. peace.

MY 400th w00t!!
yah, robert jordan owns me for real....
u4ea: no i've never heard of him...good stuff??

Posted by Linx_da_cat on Jun-04-2001 01:03:

catcher of the rye is indeed quality.

i like jordan's style better than tolkien's. maybe it's because robert's is more modern? i dunno...but i agree that tolkien is brilliant and always will be regarded as one of the legends and fathers of today's fantasy.

whats lame?

yeah it was slim pickings after that. TSR was running out of creative juice. in fact margaret weis and tracy hickman did a spoofy run off Dragonlances famous Fizban in Death gate cycle. That was cheesy. his name in those series was nabzif or something.

there wasn't that much great known fantasy writers in the early 1900s?? it was a different time and place. its impossible to compare to the talent today.

Whats odd of bout JRR's series was I ended up reading it from the end to the front: hobbit, lord of the rings series, and then silmarillion.. unfortunate mistake, cuz i knew the entire history of sauron and his demise.

there were other books he never finished that his son tried to do too.

crack? LOL.. look who's talking.. you're comparing Tom Clancy to JRR Tolkien.. not even in the same genre.

im sure you heard of Rainbow Six? turned it into a popluar game and subsequent series. Pretty good, i'd say for Tom's works, not to mention movies of his books were also made.

JRR's was MiddleEarth RPG, and just recently the movie production of LOTR.

i've read both authors, i just find both has their own appeal, i just like jordan's a little better thats all.

Posted by Renegade on Jun-04-2001 04:31:

Read This!

Expand your mind guys.

I only really read non-fiction stuff at the moment. Currently simultaneously reading Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time and Immanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. Other books that I've read recently (i.e past 6 months):

Friedrich Nietzsche Twilight of the Idols/The Anti-Christ
Albert Camus The Outsider
Albert Camus The Fall
Albert Camus The Plague (though I couldn't really get into this one)
Jean-Paul Satre Nausea (great book!)
Arthur Schopenhauer Essays and Aphorisms

And that's about it I think.....

Posted by Suzaku on Jun-04-2001 05:11:

Renegade you are a reader after my own taste, my favorite book of all time is "The Stranger" by Albert Camus. A friend of mine has recently put me on this whole fantasy kick and I am loving it. Here's what I am reading.

Current reading material:
Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind

Last 3 books I've read:
Enders Game by Orson Scott Card
A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin
The Comedy Writer by Peter Farrelly
