Sinead O'Connor "Retires"

Article in the New York Times, I spied today, didn't know who she was outside of doing the vocals for "Guide Me God."

Does anyone care? She's retired twice before.

Shes famous outside of just doing vocals for a few trance tracks - not just here in Europe. Press all over the world went ape shit on her a few years ago when she tore up a picture of the pope on live TV .

yup she said that she doesnt want to known as a "famous" person, like over here when ppl see her its like"oh theres sinead o connor",big wop like.

she used to be a priest aswell, but u didnt know that, scary alrite!

Unhappy

i care.. she is an amazing singer, political figure head and all round person, plus dont be so disrespectful..

to some people she is like pvd to some of us, how would u like it your fav dj finished and someone said something like ' uh, who gives a shit ?'

my 2 cents

Posted by DJ Dingel on Apr-29-2003 23:49:

I didn't mean any disrespect, I was just askign if it was a big deal. The NYT article made it sound like this wasn't much news, because she's pulled the "retirement" gig before...

Posted by mikefasssy on Apr-30-2003 00:08:

no offence, but i really think her vocals suck

they harsh get int he way of tracks imho

heh sorry dude i read your thing the wrong way

fassy ? you should listen to 'her' music not trance with her vocals, for example pheonix from the flame wasnt made to be a trance track it is a gaelic folk song..

Posted by TrAnCeAkI on Apr-30-2003 01:07:

i think she did a good job in god guide me but im not a big fan of hers anyways sow why would she retire music thats stupid! if i could sing or do vocals id only retire if i lost my voice or i if i died!!!

Posted by Micheline on Apr-30-2003 01:55:

does anybody know why she tore up a picture of the pope?
crazy bitch
i also heard that she is a lesbian.

Posted by DJ Dingel on Apr-30-2003 02:06:

She's Irish, so tearing up the Pope's picture was a political statement (in regards to shaking off the Catholic Church's dominance in Ireland). She's a member of an offshoot of Roman Catholicism, called Latin Tridentine Church, of which she was a priest for three months. Can someone from that side of the pond explain the significance more?

Don't know anything about her sexuality. Not sure it's important.

Posted by Micheline on Apr-30-2003 02:10:

why the fuck everybody were booing her after this statement? i dont find it a big deal. I saw the poor girl vry at one concert cause everybody were yelling and calling her names.

I loved her vocals from Conjure One Ft Sinead O'Connor - Tears From The Moon (Hybrid). Guide me god was also great. I hope shes not serious about retiring.

Couple o' things regarding her:

- Legend has it she originally had very nice hair, and when she got wind that she was going to be marketed based primarily on her good looks, she shaved her head in protest. I think there are new terms in artist contracts that prevent people from pulling that sort of thing now.
- Her first big hit was a cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U" in 1990. If you ever wondered who sang that song, it was her.
- M.C. Hammer (now THERE'S someone no one gives a shit about) at one point was so mad at her that he very publicly mailed her a one-way plane ticket back to Ireland, full cost paid. (Does anyone remember the details of this?) Delightfully, her career long outlasted his.

Posted by Micheline on Apr-30-2003 03:40:

Nothing Compares 2 U is original song from her.
and i am very sure she is a lesbian.

Posted by zorra on Apr-30-2003 03:41:

What no!! yea i dont care either. She is a lesbian and she openly admits it. Plus shes like a priest too

Posted by djmorph on Apr-30-2003 06:28:

retire?

Is she retiring from producing or retiring from performing ? I hate when musical artists say they're "retiring" like what are they "retiring" from-- they need to use another word to describe a musical artist who stops performing-- like quiting. She's quiting the musical business. Cuz its not like she had a 9-5 she worked for all these years n now shes gonna collect her pention or sum such shit

Posted by pussel on Apr-30-2003 06:57:

it's always sad when someone that is established retires, although I don't think the tracks featuring her vocals are that good, too much focus on the vocals in those songs in my opinion.

what what!? sinead rules!

conjure one feat. sinead o connor - tears from the moon (dj tisto mix)
ghostland feat. sinead o connor - guide me god (paul van dyk remix)
sinead o connor - troy (the phoenix from the flame) (push club remix)

how much do these tracks rule? very much i can tell you!

i just watched a doucument about her a few months ago! i don't think she's lesbian, she's been married and has a kid if i remember correctly. she has been sexually abused as a child, therefore she's so angry, and she has all the right to be mad!

she is a priest too and a devout christian. she tore the picture of the pope because she was angry at him, because he didn't judge/disapprove some priests that had sexually abused kids, and this pissed her off (even more than it would piss off just anyone), because she has experienced the same thing herself!

that's pretty much all i can remember from the document!

i'd say she's a very interesting person and her voice is great and different than so many others!

When you make a political statement, you set yourself up for people to criticize you. What many artists don't understand is that they have the right to be yelled at and called names at concerts in retaliation to statements that they make and actions that they have. The picture that was torn up was her protest and free speech, and the resulting yelling and calling of names was a response to that. If you'd like any further proof to this, see the Dixie Chicks, they have pulled a silimar thing with the George Bush statements.

I would say that Sinead retiring is basically no news. She likes to change her mind a lot anyways, so she'll be back. I've never thought her voice was that great, I'd rather hear a Bjork or PJ Harvey over her any day of the week.

As far as being a lesbian, who knows and who cares. That plays nothing into this discussion, unless you are trying to analyze whether or not her lyrics have lesbian undertones or messages to them. Maybe she's bi anyways, which no one really brings up because everyone is so caught up on either being hetro or gay.

I think you'll find it isnt.

And what does it matter if she is a lesbian?

Posted by mute79 on Apr-30-2003 18:59:

that's sad... i really liked her as an artist, hearing her voice would always send chills down my spine...

*sigh*

Posted by bigjimslade002 on Apr-30-2003 20:14:

heard she was taking time off to play the lead in the live action charlie brown movie.didn't hear about her retiring....

GIVE TRANCE A CHANCE....

Posted by vito on Apr-30-2003 22:28:

this comes what, 4 months after i say i like her vocals?

conjure one feat. sinead o connor - tears from the moon (dj tisto mix)
ghostland feat. sinead o connor - guide me god (paul van dyk remix)
sinead o connor - troy (the phoenix from the flame) (push club remix)

^ exactly why i like her (you even got the right mixes )

her solo stuff isn't my style and i don't want to hear her politics or about her sexuality

not a big deal though, justine suissa hasn't retired, jan johnston, sarah mclachlan etc.

Posted by wackattack on May-01-2003 00:37:

Dunno

i love her vocals myself.i dont anyone could ever sound as good as her. i dont care what she does but atleast she could come back and help make a few tracks better.

Posted by armandzadza on May-01-2003 01:57:

Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2U in my opinion served as a predecessor to melodic trance. If you only know Sinead from the PvD mix of Guide Me God, I suggest that you check out her earlier work. I guarantee that you would be pleasantly surprised.
