Read This! New Matt Darey Interview - Upcoming Productions, Remixes & DJ Dates New Gamemaster

Taken from http://trance.nu/v3/

Matt Darey. If you dont know the name you have to give your books another round, or just drop by your local club. Mr. Darey is responsible for a wide row of classic releases that seen light of day on some of the worlds most respected labels.

Its been rather quiet around the chap the past year, but it was just the silence before the storm. Because Matts been busy with producing more of those goosebumping euphoric tunes that make it all the way to the hall of fame. Trance.nu had a word with him to see whats to expect for the summer.

TNU: Youve just given your old classic Gamemaster from the Lost Tribe guise a refreshed treatment. How come you got about doing a new remix of it?
Just fancied it... Im gonna do a lot of DIing this year so I need new material that rocks that no one else has.

TNU: Are there any other remixes in the pipeline of other old classics like Wizards of the Sonic, Point Zero etc.?
Point zeros next.. Its an old classic so I've got a couple of big names doing mixes aswell just for the crack!

TNU: Are you worried that people might see these re-releases as a bit commercial, a waterproof way of making money? Whats your thought on that?
Well I think re-releases can be tiresome if there crap but if they outshine or equal the original its not a bad thing.. With Point Zero I never made a penny out of the original as it was my first record deal and I got a shit deal... I now have the rights to re-record it and well you never know.. Someone might buy it, but I tell you one thing, Im gonna love remaking it whether it sells or not.

TNU: Youre also playing some of your new productions, like Intoxicate. What else can we expect from you in the coming months?
Yeah Im keeping new tracks like Intoxicate under my belt for my DJsets but I'll start filtering copies out over the next month.

TNU: Now that the summers on its way, do you produce more summery tunes or just keep to the regular Matt Darey style?
Well I never really did anything too dark.. Uplifting and energetic = summer....thats me!!! :-)

Gamemaster and Point-Zero in new shapes might just be the summers big hits. But for those of you that like to reject the recycle trend even though this can be considered the legitimate part of it Matt got quite a few productions up his sleeve. Expect more than just Intoxicate to do the rounds!

Matts upcoming DJ-dates:
May 4th Euphoria @ Void Stoke (UK)
May 9th Euphoria @ Heaven London (UK)
June 7th Club Ignition Copenhagen (Denmark)
June 14th Passion Coalville (UK)
July 18th Dance til Dawn @ Heaven London (UK)
Aug. 8th Euphoria @ Heaven London (UK)
Aug. 9th Isis Nottingham (UK)

Some interesting stuff there about one of the finest trance producers ever. Especially looking forward to Gamemaster and Point-Zero because they hold so many good memories for me. Not fond of rehashing and wrecking the classics or updating them for the sake of it but I think that he should do a good job in brining them bang up to date for 2003

Comments?

Great news! I surely hope Matt does better job with updating Gamemaster than Armin did with his Blue Fear 2003..

Yeah Matt was a forefigure in todays modern Trance scene Way back in 97, ie Distant Voices EP. Tracks like Gamemaster and Angel, have stood the test of time. I hope he does a more up to date ver of these tracks, I'll be in cum country

good news, i'm really loking for new gamemaster

Posted by Floorfiller on Apr-30-2003 17:08:

this sounds like it'll be good...i didn't really like the last couple of darey productions aka buzz and moody and you shine on, but the man still has great potential. and damn it...someone better record those sets so that we all can hear the new stuff...

Really looking forward to some new Matt Darey. Electro Buzz is still leaving a bad taste in my mouth that he hasn't made me forget about yet with anything new!

Hmm... a new version of Point Zero... sounds very interesting as the original is one of my favourite trance tunes ever (God, I'd love to have it on a new cd single). Anyway, hopefully Darey doesn't fvck it up, haven't been that impressed with his latest productions...

man i love lost tribe, got every official mix of every lost tribe track on cd, cant wait

Posted by vito on Apr-30-2003 22:01:

sweet, gamemaster is an excellent tune
and some top productions from matt could make this a summer to remember

good to have him back

Posted by heaven scent on Apr-30-2003 22:20:

Don't you think he should just leave them alone? Gamemaster is pretty much just perfect how it is, looking at his syle of producing now imo he's just going to ruin them

I'm not a big fan of classic tunes being re-hashed, its very rare they're anything like as good as the original

Thanks for the interview, nice to get an update on what he's been up to. Hmm...now all we need is a Matt Darey Essential Mix...

agreed. i keep hearing all these old tunes re-released that just make me sad (Rank1- Ariwave, Storm - Time to Burn, AVB - Blue Fear), and it just sucks. I guess if its as good/better than the original i cant complain but if it isnt, then its just another classic overmixed one again....

Matt Dareyis so awesome. His new productions are unique and still full of energy. If anyone has kept up the energy and not changed it's Matt darey. I know he sort of disappeared but his back.

An essential mix would be sweet although I see more prog em's than anything else.

Can't wait to hear his new shit.

Moody's got to be one of the top quality tunes he ever produced as well as Electrobuzz which is a cracka of a tune.

I can't believe some of you people actually compared AVB to Matt Darey.....Matt Darey shits all over Armin...sheez

Matt Darey is fucking god.

This gets me thinking that this could be a bad sign for trance this year
Alot of old material is being remixed for 2003. I think this kinda sux in terms of originality.

ill second that, his productions were well ahead of their time

Posted by Cobalt on May-01-2003 12:36:

I think I've tolerated the remakes up to a certain point. This will just make or break my opinion of them.

Overall, I think producers should stay away from remaking old tunes, especially when everyone else is doing the same thing. It seems like such a cop-out for actual new material.

Posted by GrimReaper on May-01-2003 12:40:

I didn't actyally compare them or didn't say anything about Armin being better than Matt or vice versa.. i was just hoping Matt manages to do a better job with remaking Gamemaster than most of the recent remakes have turned out to be..

And i agree with Nell, Matt's productions were indeed well ahead of their time!

Posted by Turbotrance on May-01-2003 13:01:

Certaintly reworking the classics is far from good for the trance scene as a whole long term, but when you take into account the nature of dance music where 99% of tracks are released with many different mixes and remixes, it is good when you are on the dancefloor in a club in the midle of the night and you hear the distinctive chords of one of your favourite tracks with an exciting new mix.

I think for a lot of tranceaddicts and certaintly for me the bast*@*ing of Rank 1 -Airwave by Rank 1 themselves with their truly awful rework of Airwave for 2003 left a feeling that some classic tunes are best left as that, classics to enjoy.

But at the same time if it is done properly by the right producers then some reworks and remixes can add a lot to the original, for example Tilt's Courtyard remix of Children is imo even better than the beautiful original.

I believe that Matt Darey has the talent and potential to do a good job on Gamemaster and Point Zero, admittingly some of his recent tunes have been dissapointing but that is only in comparsion to his groundbreaking releases in 99 which are still some of the finest uplifting trance tunes ever made today.

I believe that he will return to the same sort of production values and sound that made him who he is today.

Just my opinion
