Car Stereo Help

Need some help on purchasing a 2-channel amp. I have two Rockford Fosgate 6x9's, each with an RMS of 75 watts. I know this might sound stupid but do I have to buy an amp that can provide at least 75 watts per channel or can the wattage per channel provided by the amp be less than 75 watts but within reason, let's say maybe 60 watts per channel? Any help appreciated.

sure, 60 watts will be fine... most speakers are overrated anyway to make them look better to consumers so you shouldn't have anything to worry about...

Better a weak amp than weak speakers, that will preserve them from blowing. And, ya, 60W will be fine

underpowering them is not gonna preserve them, however, 60 watts will be fine if 75 watts is the PEAK power of your speakers, not RMS.

Matching peak power figures has almost no relevance at all to car audio.

Ideally u should get an amp that cranks out 2x75 watts RMS your speakers. Of course u can have a lower output, but that can lead to problems with distortion. To cut it short, 60W RMS should be fine.

If u have a weak amp powering speakers like that, for example 2x45W RMS, and u turn up the volume, u will cause lots of distortion in the sound of the speakers, because the voicecoils will try and reproduce high power outputs, yet it is not receiving them from the amp. What results from this is that the voicecoils will overheat OF THERE OWN ACCORD, and thus u will destroy some perfectly good speakers.

So my advice is, to keep it at a decent volume where no distortion can be heard!

dj_mdma is right.
better get an amp that is capable of little above 75w, so you have less distortion at higher volumes and so the quality of the sound is better. but be careful with max. volume since you can more easily blow your speakers :]
