Darkrave 39 Review

I had never been to a darkrave event before, so I decide to check it out and see what it was like. If you didn't go - you missed out on a great event. I'll probably head to these things regularly - it was REALLY enjoyable.

The Music: The music was awesome. Dr. Trance played a stellar trance set, the other room had some great psy-trance and around midnight upstairs had some good hard-trance/techno going. I think that any TA that usually meets up for events would really enjoy the music that this event provides. After going to darkrave and only having like 5 TAs there, I sort of get the impression that a majority of the people on here only go to "headliner" parties. If this is the case - man are you missing out. Darkrave had banging trance of all genres going on all night (I was there from 11:30 until 4:30). Sure it wasn't PvD, Tiesto or AvB, but the music was good and which the night much better than the previous night (Friday @ SystemS).

The Venue: I had to say that I liked Bigbop/Reverb/Cathederal. It's not exactly superclub material, but to be honest it was one of the times in the 3 years that I felt I was at a rave - rather than being at a "club". The decor that the Darkrave people setup: the lasers, the smoke machine (in every room! 3 rooms total) totally turned this old bar/building/nightclub into a rave. It almost felt like I was in an abandoned warehouse - just like the old days.... Reverb had 2 big projection screens playing various things, which added to the vibe (except for the explicit japanese animation porn - lol). People could go up and dance on the stage if they wanted, glow sticks-a-wavin', etc. Overall I was impressed (good job darkrave people!). For a $12 dollar ticket I had 3 rooms to move between, great lights/lasers, good sound and fine decor (probably the best value party I've ever had [unless I got free entry on guestlist]). I hope the next Darkrave is held at the same venue. And they didn't pack the joint! I could move freely, dance with loads of room and wasn't squished once (except when some girl who fell over on me while trying to do a spinning move while dancing - lol).

The crowd: The crowd at darkrave was VERY interesting. About 1/3 were candy ravers (wearing loads of candy bracelets/necklaces, fuzzy pants, angle costumes, etc), another 1/3 were goth (black everything, leather, dark hair, piercings) and the other 1/3 were just about the average joe/jane. What made it great was that everybody co-mingled - there were no cliques or groups, everybody was just there to dance, have fun, chat and enjoy the night. The vibe was great - everybody in a good mood, feeling good, dancing good and having a good time.

Overall, this night was full of good surprises, and an amazing time. I came not knowing what to expect and I left loving the party and wanting another (really soon!).

If I had one suggestion: more TAs should check this event out. It was pretty sad to only have 5 TAs show up, when the night was almost exclusivly trance, psy/hard trance or hard techno.

Sure, it wasn't Viva with Johan/Hardwick/Marco V, and it wasn't guv - but it was an amazing night that I know most of the TAs I usually see at parties would enjoy.

Hope to see you at the next one!

Nice review, RJ!

It really looks like a great event! I was planning on going to this one, if I still wasn't in the middle of exams (UofT, and all - I mean, I still have 2 more exams for pete's sake lol!). The next time I will definitely go. Psy-trance, here I come.

That is always the best part! Beats the hell out of any gino/attitude vibe at ye olde nightclub.

I will attend one or more of these as the summer progresses.

I think Darkrave is the last remnant of the rave scene. No kids sketched out in the corner, no barstars/plastic people, and the goths are approachable too.

It was hard to leave before close.

Damn it's too bad I missed it, I wanted to go but my plans sort of changed due to my friend and only getting in Saturday afternoon (read: transportation).

But thanks for the review RJ, I'll definitely be heading down there next time! Big name DJs are NOT a necessity!

Thumbs up

Yep the review reflects the actual setting of Darkrave. It really is a great event.
It's really cool that they stamp your hand so that you can exit/enter the club as many times as you want (like if you have booze in your car or just feel like a breath of fresh air)
I went for the past 3 times and I'm going to the next one for sure.

We will definately have to hit this up again. Hope others do as well. I had so much fun. It was quite an experience and who better to party with than MR. RJP himself.

It was nice to meet you Duncan and it's funny that I met your brother in law before. Hope he is hanging in there.

I never got to say goodbye to you guys; from the sound of it, all went well with the evening.

That's the best time I have had at a rave in ages.

It's strange, now that I am used to going to the big KH events that end at 8-ish, 6am seemed early.
