MPEG/AVI Editor

Im looking for some powerfull software that can strip avi files, encode to mpeg & i need to split large mpeg files into 2 so a video can be fitted onto 2 vcds. Any suggestions on what software to use? Ive dabbled with myflix but i dont like it.

Virtualdub and Adobe Premiere are the two i use!
