Synths

So i'm looking to pickup a couple synths, but I really don't know where to start. I'm thinking of a JP8000, JP8080 and maybe a virus A (since it's cheap). What I wana know is why do producers use so many different synths and what for? For example, is the JP8000 only used for leads etc but not for drums/percs? I'd love to know what synth is used to create certain sounds of if one can do multiple jobs.

Simply because they sound different.

I would recomend the Jp-80X0 because it's pretty easy to learn and it's not that expensive but if u've loads of cash get a Virus C.

Easiest way to decide which synth u want to buy is to test em in ur local music store.

Different synths sound different.

Some synths can be "coaxed" into sounding somewhat like another synth, however.

If you're thinking about getting a synth, I would definately NOT get a Virus A. It will be one of those cases where soon after buying it you will realize you could have had a Virus B for about three hundred more. The Virus B is on of the best synths for the money if you ask me. It doesn't sound like a MOOG or an Omega 8 but it CAN sound close and the modulation routing are enough to keep you busy for a long time.

Yeah each synth sounds differnt.

I own a novation supernova pro and I must say I like it alot. It has a pretty distinct sound (even though differnt patches vary), and I would say overall it sounds fairly aggressive.

Other synths that you should consider besides the JPs are:

Waldorf Q
Waldorf Micro Q
Novation Supernova II
Clavia Nord Lead 2
Clavia Nord Lead 3

If you have a midi controller keyboard, just go with the rackmount versions, it will save you alot of money.

that's somehow also personal taste. I know people who say that it got awesome basssounds.

You just should spend some time in the local music store and check all the stuff they've got there. Mostly when I go there, I am quite impressed by the awesome filters those synths have ( and arpeggiators ), but the preset sounds or the demo songs don't impress me that much and I am returning home to my own collection of patches and wav files in my favourite software programm

If you want a cheap synth, there is often a good chance for an hot deal at ebay...

Most have their particular synths for a job..
Like an A-station/tb 303 for basses
jp8000/an1x/virus/nord lead/Waldorf Q for leads, fx, basses, etc.. All things except real instruments
roland jv1080/2080 = sample based synth for real instruments mainly
tr909/er1 , ... drum synths..

When you're rich you can buy these all

Just remember they also started with 1 cheap second hand synth.
If it's in you you'll get it out some time

The best thing you can do is to buy more synths, so you can creating more new sounds with layering etc...but there�s a problem: money

I have different synths and i have something from everything...
so if the JP-8080 sounds too digital, i can swith over to the virus b and so on...
If you get a virus, you will be happy first, cause it covers a lot sounds, from hard to soft and strings and fx...but the virus is really not a beginner synth..there are so many things to learn - and "hidden" menues with more options,...the JP-8080 is in my opinion the synth with the BEST panel. You have a great overview of all functions that affect the sounds...there are menue-options too, but they are easier to find (and to remember) than in the virus...

There are OF COURSE other GOOD synths...

It just depends on:
- what you want to do with it
- what you already know about synths and sound synthesis
- what you can afford
