This clip is from Eddie Haliwell on the Essential Mix. After about an hour and half, he just busts loose and starts scratching, and its badass.

Now, I've practiced scratching alot, but, just lame stuff, like cutting, babies, chirps, and never stuff that is fast. What eddie is doing is just FAST! I need to know what he is doing. That was really cool. The file is here. It's only 1 meg. have a listen!

agreed. halliwell can scratch like a mofo!

I can hear the part when he's crabbing, yeah. It's a really fast 4-click scratch. But what about the part where he is making like..an alternating sound..like a baby, but, waaay cooler.

I have that scratch record lol..

It seems like every single scratch sample that I've heard in any song is from the stanton vinyl beat counting system record.

Anyways it sounds crazy,, I wish I could scratch like that! i can never get the crab going properly.

Could you point me towards an exact time to look at in your clip?

Posted by BobTheSlob on May-09-2003 00:41:

certainly!

seconds 15-21, ,and 44-47. i guess that would have helped earlier! sorry

Well, to me, that sounds like a simple back and forth scratch, just done quickly. I could be way off here, but that's what I'm thinking.

Posted by BobTheSlob on May-09-2003 01:49:

That's what I was thinking, but it sounded too good. Too crisp and separated. Do you think maybe he's chirping really fast?

Posted by DJ_NRG on May-09-2003 01:52:

Its a possibility. He could be having a seizure on the crossfader, too.

Posted by BobTheSlob on May-09-2003 02:30:

LoL! Sounds like a well planned seizure. I need to practice whatever it is.

that's some crazy scratching, i always wanted someone to teach me how to scracth hehe

I found exactly what it is. On my record, with that generic "aaaaaAHHH" sound, there is one that goes *click*"aaaaHHHH". All he was doing was babying over the *click*. It's the exact same sound. And he was crabbing over the "aaaaHHHH" and reverse tearing back over it.

Lol. shut people up.

OMG I LOVE EDDIE HALLIWELL.

He is definately one to watch out for in the future. His mixing towards the end of his essential mix was gettin a bit dodgy. You could hear him fixing the beats. I need to start learning how to scratch quick!!!

Posted by dj1212 on May-15-2003 20:23:

Yeah, I would have to say that is just a tear done really fuckin fast and for a long ass time. You might have to life some weights to be able to cut it up for that long without getting fatigued.

Posted by DJ_NRG on May-19-2003 22:59:

You know? I've been listening to this clip over and over, just admiring the speed of the scratch. The something dawned on me...What the hell is the song that is playing that he's scratching over? Just sounds perfect for scratching...Anyone have a clue?

Posted by fr0st on May-21-2003 02:58:
