Labels, labels, labels...
Since some of you people seem to be overly obsessed with getting signed/released/whatever, I thought I'd post this:

lol great read man!
i dont think i fancy the swimming through the trench though! maybe ill just leave it
thats why i want to put out my own material my self. i just have to wait till i get some money (i.e. get out of college and get a job). hell maybe ill even start a entertainment company someday
.
hehe, good read. thanks
and the moral is: buy less music (download more) because the artists won't see any of the money anyway
haha
This was definately a good read, but it seems to apply for bigger labels, rather than the majority of small-mid trance labels.
My personal thoughts:
These record contracts are tricky. They are worded strangely, very difficult to understand, and can limit almost everything you do in the future. It is very important that you make sure you understand the contract before you sign anything. What may seem like a good deal could turn out to put a halt on your future music career for many years. If you are serious about your music, and you don't want to be stuck in the future because of a foolish mistake, Get a lawyer!

Good read,Mr.Mystert, even tho I suspect that things are a bit different since that article covers bands, not producers/djs.
hahah good read...
We're not all bad though.
Our label are more interested about getting the tracks pressed & released than the money coming in.
Of course we dont have that much money to offer people anyway, they will still do ok for themselves
anyway, if anybody fancies sending me demos...pm me for my address and we'll talk
loL! good stufffff
he he, you make me want it even more!
I think this one is getting relevant again...
well yea, but you know thats how shitty this world is..
You can go to the club and risk to been beaten to death by some guy full with drugs, or a group of people that dislike you..
You can drive a car and risk an accident with a drunk whore driver.
And now these days, you can't even work in a skywalker, you mite see a plain infront of you..
you have to try to know mystery
good read!! thanks
MAKE YOUR FRIENDS HAPPY!! THAT ALL WHAT COUNTS!
ITS PROUD TO BE IMPORTANT BUT MORE IMPORTANT IS TO BE PROUD
sry for caps lock and that scooter lyric
Your quote makes no sense at all. The phrase "It's proud" makes no sense
Scooter did not make this up btw, it goes way back, and the original quote is:
It's nice to be important but its more important to be nice.
Anyways the article is a good read, its more geared towards bands though that have all kinds of agents and representation and studio fees. For producers who simply sign over tracks to labels this isn't really applicable.
i dont really see how this aplies to us that much (trance/electronica porudcers) for one we all have our own studio thus according to his numbers we can just drop recording expence alltogether + $150,000
only an idiot would pay $5,000 for artwork when he could get someone in college or on ta to do it for free
Mastering: $10,000, BULLSHIT... the mastering companie that i worked at over the summer a year ago was charging $800 a cd ...and they are the BEST in the seattle/NW area, they do Pearl Jams CD's.
i dont really know that much about the price tags on the rest of the stuff but im definatley questioning his data.

I read this very article a long time ago, 3-4 years at least, and it might even be pre-Napster. I wonder how much has changed since Steve Albini wrote it.
I agree that it doesn't apply as much to us; looks like it's more about hard market than niche market.
BTW you should hear some stories about the politics of cheese (DJ Sammy etc.)
