Promo Mix available online

I have made my promo mix available online for download. The set was mixed on a Vestax PCV-275 and recorded through a Summit Audio DCL200 and RME Digi96 audio card into PC. The mix consists of new and old tracks alike in the style I mix at clubs. The mp3, tracklist, and cue files are below:

http://66.97.36.105/Alphazone_Promo_Mix.cue

(may need to right click and "save as")

This is a very good mix. How long have you been dj'ing?

Posted by azone on May-13-2003 15:42:

I've been composing for 8 years. I am trained in piano, audio engineering and electrical engineering so I know about song structure and recording - but as far as actually DJing I've only been doing it for the past 3 months. I've just started doing DJ gigs 5 weeks ago - hence the promo mix.. (I've been performing live for a while though).

Smiley DJ Superb Mix!

Just like to comment on your mix mate, top quality just what i like to listen to! I would go as far to say that it's been the best mix i've heard in this forum for a while, mainly because of the tune selection and it's the style i like to play as well.

Nice one, keep up the good work

i know I will probably get flamed but fuck it... seriously I am not bashing you but I mean look at the tracklist it's all filled up with anthems... and I mean do we really need another Tiesto or Ferry Corsten... I am not insulting you just making an observation, if I did offend u I apologise but I think you should be more creative with the tracklist, but that again that's what I used to spin when I just started to spin...

Posted by azone on May-13-2003 19:28:

trancearmada, no offense taken! I'm really not into the melody dominated tracks like a Tiesto. When I put a melodic track in there I like it to have dominant rhythmic and groove components. In fact I wouldn't consider most of these tracks anthems...
Afterburn - Frattboy
Armin Van Buuren - Sunburn (Original Mix)
Midway - Monkey Forest (Original Mix)
Three Drives - Carrera 2 (Original Mix)
E-Craig - Drum Beats (Club Mix)
Afterburn - North Pole
Ralphie B - Massive - (Filterheadz Remix)
Alphazone - Afterhours (Original Mix)

it's about the mix and track selection. That's just my opinion of course. Also, this is a promo mix and you have a good tracklisting in there to send to promoters (most of the club promoters in the US aren't even familiar with the majority of these songs). As far as being new to spinning that may be true but I've been composing trance since before I ever heard of guys like Tiesto and I own more than 300 trance genre CD's and now more than 300 vinyls..so certaintly not new to the music..just doing what I like

Posted by mecha on May-13-2003 20:20:

dude it is 2003
you use all the anthems
be original, nobody will ever give you a gig if you are playing
all the tunes that big name dj's are playing

Posted by trancearmada on May-13-2003 21:09:

well as far as promoters I agree that most don't know what the tunes are, but that again "those" would not hire you in the first place, at least not likely. I mean if they don't have a slightest clue as to what your are playing, they are likely to hand the promos over to DJ's they know and in turn those DJ's will be the ones to tell the promoter if your promo is any good. Generally no one listens to the full promo mix either so it's important to have the first 20 minutes of the mix solid on track selection and mixing... But those that generally know their music normally nowdays only hire progg or techno dj's for the most part anyways. At least in places like NY, Chicago, LA, SF... the list goes on...
and in regards to being original what I meant was that u should explore a little more yourself and u don't necessarily have to even play trance all the time either. experiment u could throw in a little house or even some progressive house, or techno (and by techno u know I mean real techno and not what the general American population perceives it as anything to do with dance music period...)

So are you the REAL alphazone?

Posted by marQ de clarQ on May-14-2003 09:20:

i think the longer you dj the more your style evolves i guess. maybe you get tired of all uplifting stuff so you get your hands on something else too...
but for a promo i think it's okay to have lots of anthems. doesn't really matter imo. i don't think a promo should be able to reflect THE WHOLE of the dj - you can't throw in everything on a promo ...
but that's my humble opinion. i've never done a promo mix.
instead i went to the manager and asked for some playing time. if they allow it it works well.
good luck anyhow

oh, btw, can i hear some of your compositions?

Since he hasn't replied, I checked out his site and he's not. He might change his name when he finds out there has been another one. ANYways, great mix, especially like afterburn - frattyboy, I would love to get my hands on that record. Mixing was smooth, at some points it seemed to fast for my taste. Great track selection.

peace,

Steve

I've been writing and performing under the name Alphazone since 1999. I started out on MP3.com during it's heyday and did very well and received a good deal of attention (and some decent change!). I had two white labels released in March 2000 (500 copies) and two tracks released on compilation CD from Intinct Records in Jan 2001 (75,000 copies). So yes I am the real Alphazone but there is another Alphazone that's been around for the past 18 months that's been doing really well remixing hard trance tracks and has recieved a lot of attention this past year. I believe they're two guys from Germany.

thats what i was thinking when i looked at trklist but it looks solid neways.

alphazone = ralphie b = you?

Posted by dj adagnitio on May-17-2003 22:01:

alphazone=ralphie b?

Alpha Zone is not Ralphie B. Ralphie B =Alpha Breed.

And that set does seem very anthemy, I would consider all but maybe two of those tracks anthems. It is also looked down apon by most people to put two tracks by the same artist in a mix. Thats just my opinion though, I havent actually listened to the mix so I have no clue how good the mixing is.
