Play da record (store)..opinions??!!

I just went to Play Da Record on Yonge street today and noticed how great that place is!!! I saw tons of vinyl I'd buy if I had the cash and the TTs. I think I'm gonna buy a stanton mixer from them... can I go wrong with a $129 mixer?? I'm gonna be a n00b mixer, so probably right??
so yea I just wanna see some opinions of yours about the place.

they've been outta that place for a couple of months now .. they're on Queen and Spadina now ..

ummmmm..thanks for the heads up...

but didn't i also say i haven't been there since it was on adelaide...and...when was that...3 years ago?

*EDIT*

play de record is a good store for vinyl, decent selection but IMO it isn't top notch for electronic music (trance, breaks, dnb, house whatever).

My opinion - go to release or the pit.

Don't get me wrong PDR is ok, but it way too damn cluttered and disorganized for me.

Just outta curiousity, is this place easy to spot? I have to go down there this weekend and I can't say that I've been there before.

PDR is right next to Zanzibar (the strip club) just north of dudas/yonge street (east side). Not to say I've ever been in Zanzibar....

KarateKid

it's always fun to stand around that area during the day .. u can always find someone trying to sell ya low quality weed ..

Posted by Kid Lax on May-16-2003 04:52:

ive found some gems at play de

but its such a bitch to look through the bins that sometimes i just don't even bother...my fingers always end up getting bloody after i search through the bins

and then IF you do find something and its at the back, its nearly impossible to get it out

good store though
they'll order you whatever you want and give youa clal when it comes in

Posted by marcus82 on May-16-2003 04:59:

yeah...damn pushers...

i like the 25 cent XXX place...LOL, i think i'll have to go their and find out what it's all about!

Where is Release and the Pit???

and what do you guys say about the mixer price???

Posted by mute79 on May-16-2003 16:22:

^^^ They're both around Yonge/College area...

The Pit Records - 439 Yonge St.
Release Records - 527 Yonge St.

I dunno much about Play De, I went in once, saw it was plastered with hip hop/r&b, and left...

get out on college station, walk down (south) yonge towards eaton center (big screen, u can't miss it)
as u walk south, it's gonna be a store on the left side on the street.. # 527 with a speaker outside the door.

i wouldn't buy a stanton mixer...i have NOTHING against them but i personally gonna get American DJ or even better: Behringer make pretty good, entery class mixers that are heavy duty.

BEST ADVICE: if u like the Stanton mixer and feels good in ur hands, go for it.

lol agreed.
but they "atleast" had a few blackhole records in there... i got Ton TB - Silent Witness/Rebirth from there...also PVD - Nothing But You

again: it's not very organized, their target is mainly hiphop/top40 euro stuff.

The Pit is not that bad, even though that bald guy in there does get pushy sometimes. Do what i do: go with a friend tell him ur shopping with him, he's gonna bug ur friend... right Arsalan? lol

Fav record store so far: Release.

I dunno G, I prefer Play De over any other store in the city... even though Release guys get bunch of promos they are mostly crap (the good ones get sold out in a matter of hours), while in Play De you can find anything, and I mean anything from progressive house/trance to tribal house/techno... and I go there to shop whenever Tim Patrick is in the store (for some quality recommendations, since he knows what the good shit is) or I manage to catch some other great locals like Dj Addy to help me out with some new stuff, and I always leave happy as a baby (broke too, but hey, that's the price you gotta pay)...

I totally agree with u
I found some sick stuff in there as well, but again u need time and ABILITY to search through piles.

Nothing comes easy my friend... then again, you can always catch the right person and ask them for a certain record or a type of music and they'll search those piles for you!

Posted by E2EK1EL on May-17-2003 08:36:

Didn't Eastern block closed down ? I remembered on TJ.COM afew months ago they confirmed that. And also, they were selling ppl's promo vinyls and dubplates without them knowing about it. There was a a lot TO producers that found there promos behind the counter.

Eastern block confirmed they didn't know those were ppl's promos, and also claimed the Record label didn't not say anything about it.

Too bad TJ.com data base was rested and cleared out a few motnhs, I would show you the drama Eastern Block went through.

Posted by djeso on May-18-2003 05:54:

I usually go to the release records, they seem to have the best prices !!!! PDR, bloody fingers big time, and clustered, but picked up some crazy tracks, the pit, the guy loads you up with tons of vinyls, some wicked others not so wicked (if you got the time to go through 100's)

Posted by TheNeonAlien on May-19-2003 18:06:

sometimes i find myself browsing through tons of shit vinyl at PDR! they really should get a bigger place! The Pits selection is crappy!

I thought eastern bloc went under and folded

but I would suggest
the pit ( just south of College on Younge )
release records ( just north of College on Younge I think )
and 2 the Beat records ( spadina )

and 2 the Beat is new and I hear it's really good

and when buying Dj equipment depending if you're serious about it or not always go with the best equipment or near to it
but if you just want to mess around
you could go with two stanton tables and a stanton mixer with a Kaos pad and have some fun
that could work
