Question What Is Progressive?

Ok ppl just what the hell is progressive? some ppl say to me that its music that buids up and explodes at the end. Some ppl say that its stuff like gouryella other ppl say its completely different and some ppl say its music that doesn't go anywhere and is just flat like kamaya painters-wasteland or tiesto flight 643. Can someone please tell me before I go INSANE!!!!!
(pref with examples)

Here we go again...Another Genre War.

You are pretty much right though. Progressive is a track that builds and builds progressively, some good examples are what you have already said (Flight 643) and Mario Piu (Mathmos Black Side).

I wouldn't say Gouryella was progressive entirely, as it is more Epic Trance, but there is nothing saying that Gourella's tracks don't build, so begins everyones definitions of Progressive. But to me Progressive Techno adopts the less is more approach, where you have to dig a bit deeper to enjoy the music.

THREAD CLOSED

hehe

yeah the classic veracocha - carte blanche is progressive..it builds up then a piano comes in then it just goes mental awesome track!!!!

Posted by Viceroy on Jun-07-2001 14:35:

^^That is exactly why these threads are such a pain in the arse^^

Carte Blanche is not progressive. That is fluff/epic trance. Progressive trance is done by the likes of Sasha and PVD.

It is a fine line to walk...trying to describe what exactly progressive is, because there are many genre's of "progressive" There is progressive house, progressive trance...progressive tech-trance and sooooo on and soooo forth.

I agree with ya man...but it is not simply just "progressive"

Posted by DRM on Jun-07-2001 19:29:

Man how the hell can Veracocha - Carte Blanche be progressive!!!!!!!! just cuz it builds up???!?! i think u guys have totally missed the whole progressive idea here. If u listen to tracks like Sandstorm - The Return of Nothing, Trancesetters - Roaches and Bedrock - Voices u will see what progressive is. Basically imo it means that track doesn't explode at any point it keeps building and building layer upon layer. A simple but quite easy way to tell a progressive track (though not always true) is after a drum roll in a uplifting track it will usually break out with a new riff or the same with a bassline. Whereas in a progressive track it will go back to the same beat as b4. Some people may not agree wiv this but it is quite true for many tracks.

im sick of arguing about this... progressive is in this thread

this is deeper prog than a lot of it... progressive is sooo wide, and it doesnt all have the same kind of sound/structure/stylee in every tune like most other types of trance/house... heres some other choonz

Blaze - My Beat (Ambassador mix)
Reflektive - Echoes
Conjure One - Redemption (Dead Sea Mix)
Pollon - Lonely Planet
MIKE - Gotta Have It (Club Mix)
Ambassador - One Of These Days

when u listen to these u will realise how diverse it is, it has elements of loads of other types of trance, like it has some good uplifting bits.. deeper sounds, random noizes n stuff.. this is why its so hard to put into words what progressive is.

Here's how you can tell if something is progressive....

If its easy to mix when spinning, then its probably Progressive!
LoL! God-bless progressive though

seroiusly, its the music that is really hard (listen to ANY mauro picotto set - THAT is progressive).

I think the Germans have perfected the Progressive Techno/Trance scene - look at all the Gary D. comps and all the Technodrome Comps - some GREAT progressive if you are looking for some.

Read This!

theres one CD that covers just about everything progressive... if u can get hold of it, its called 'Planet Progressive' mixed by Cass (from Cass & Slide) and it was the cover CD of the april issue of mixmag. its fucking sweet it goes thru a bit of twisted breakbeat, deep stuff, crazy shit, prog house, prog trance the lot

why do peeps say sasha and digweed are progressive? there sound is toally diffrent. im not a fan of either dj's but they dont sound like the tracks above. there style is sort of more repetive and doesent really "progress". its just a flat line lol.

Posted by LiquidX on Jun-08-2001 00:35:

Well, if I see people calling veracocha -- carte blanche, then the we are gonna have to call like almost every trance tune progressive, b/c all trance songs take you to like the PEAK of the tune.. mosttly.. they all have a peack somewhere.. so this explosion thing does not say is progressive..
Progressive is more like REPETATIVE sound.. that like 10 mins later you hear a change in the tune and it ends.. to my eyes, 50 % of good trance progressive I like.. some are very booooring.. and I just dont like it as much as the Epic, Uplifting and in general trance.. but , I cant say it does not sound good at a club.. but still, I rather listen to stuff like back in 99 - 00 :-) If progressive takes over.. the golden trance years of 99 -- 00 sound will Hopefully make a come back :-)
GREETZ!!

someone mentioned that mauro picotto is progressive at some points right? So hes a new form of progressive, and what about max grahm? Hes starting to get big, I never really knew much about him before this board and transport.

i dont know much but thats my take

Posted by nyczliquid on Jun-08-2001 04:06:

hmm

sot...sasha and digweed is progressive...but they can varry...they're mostly progressive house tho...

what i thought progressive was....tunes that have more of a deeper sound to it...and slower bpm...and i guess it sounds like it has more elements to it...

progressive is max graham...pvd...oakenfold...etc..

First of all, the only way to learn how to identify different genres of music is to listen to them in the first place. We can give you all the theory you want, but the only way you can really understand what the different genres are about is by experiencing them.

Second of all, music is a very subjective thing. Anyone familiar with the Cartesian "ontological rift" or the Kantian "a priori judgements" can tell you that the same piece of music will sound very different to two different men. It's impossible to agree on exactly what sort of genre a style of music should be in.

Having said that, I'll now try and explain what progressive music is.

I think it was in Mix-Mag (or summit like that) where I read probably the best definition of progressive music: "not quite house, not quite trance". Progressive music usually has the "boom chicka-boom" 4/4 beat found so often in house music, with the electric ambience and detatched melodies of trance music. Or, to make it simpler, it has a dominant beat and usually little melody. The beat sounds almost like it is churning - like it's going somewhere or "progressing" - and is always at the forefront of progressive music, with whatever melodies and vocals that there are almost taking a back seat. If you want examples, go out and buy anyone of the recent Global Underground series. They're all, to my knowledge, progressive (although different types of progressive - tech house, tech trance etc....but we won't get into that).

Just because a track has a build up or it "builds up" it doesn't make it progressive. Perhaps the original definition of progressive music encompassed only that music that built up, but as someone said before, progressive music is generally "flat" in that there are few real build-ups, and there will be the same degree of intensity in the music 8 minutes into the track as there was after 2 minutes. It's a thinking man's music for this reason, because you have to put a fair bit into it to get anything out of it. Personally, I love it, but I can also understand why others don't share my passion.

Does that make things simpler?

Posted by Renegade on Jun-08-2001 04:26:

*sigh*

Neither PVD nor Oakenfold are progressive (none of the sets/productions I've heard from them anyway). It's become fashionable to label anyone who deviates even slightly from the big-synth trance sound a "progressive" artist. But if Oakenfold and PVD are progressive, then virtually every other trance artist becomes progressive as well.

You were right about the deeper sound, nyczliquid, but I certainly don't agree that those artists are progressive.

Anyway, I don't want to start a war. Let's just close these topics, we never resolve anything anyway.

just to throw in some examples of what I call progressive

Push - Strange World (2000 remake)
Push - Till We Meet Again
Transa - Enervate
Transa - Perpetua
Transa - Behind the Sun
Tekara - Breathe in You (Tekara's mix)
DJ ICON - Voco Me
Riva - Stringer

I dont consider those progressive. but thats just me. if anything that is epic or uplifting trance. you want progressive i would try some Gary D, Technodrome, or Mauro Picotto CD's. I also don't consider Oakenfold or PvD progressive (although both are very good). I consider that all just "trance". Progressive is the hard shit you hear in clubs baby! Uplifting trance just makes you sit there and feel like you are in love, while progressive is the music that physically lifts you off your ass and onto the dancefloor. Or at least that is what it does to me!

I think Renegade put it best when he said that we all hear music differently, so everything is open for interpretation. It all comes down to the actual listener, i think. But, on the other hand, i think there is a lot of mis-labeling of music going around here.

BUT ITS ALL GOOD! Close topic shall we?

To me,

PROGRESSIVE means "the use of minimal patterned melody" to get a producers/artists point across.

It's a different approach and style from your typcal european melodic/uplifting trancer.

This "PROGRESSIVE APPROACH" can be done very nicely and can be very satisfying if done correctly.

I believe the major players in trance -the corsten's, tiesto's, tandu's (dutch, germans, italians-mauro picotto is the master at progressive) are all moving towards a progressive style, NOT BECAUSE IT'S THE TREND but probably because they -like me- are getting tired of the same trance formula.

Just listen to tandu's latest remixes, LOOONG INTRO, SHORT SMALL MELODIC PATTERNED PEAK AND LONG OUTRO.

Obviously you guys all know where tiesto is heading and look at Ferry Corsten's "needlejuice".

ONE THING'S FOR SURE, these guys will not let us down.

I think they will put the current DULL AND BORING progressive scene to shame.

That's a pretty unenlightened view. I don't know what you've been listening to mate, but there'd be hundereds of people on this board who'd be very quick to take you to task on that one.

I don't think Ferry has enough talent to do progressive to be honest. VDM has enough versatility to suggest that he can, Tiesto with Flight 643 is certainly heading in that direction, but Ferry Corsten has done a sodding thing apart from Out of The Blue and his remix Kathy's Song (both of which, to his credit, were amazing examples of trance music). He'll only be embarrassing himself if he tries to win back some credibility by leaving the euro-trance scene and moving into the progressive arena.

Classifications

Sometimes I can barely tell the difference between Progressive and other non-progressive tunes. There is a fine line where it's hard to tell and to explain to non-trance listeners.

It boils down to experience, I haven't been listening long enough to know the difference yet.

BTW - Tekara - breathe in you, does not sound like progressive, its too smooth, not as bumpy and has less spacing/breaks, and less driven.

anyone want to listen to hard progressive trance, LMK, I'll up the 50mb file (is there a way i can break this up?) to myplay locker.

the set was recorded off the turntables -> computer -> mp3.

peace
