Removing a network/shared connection?

OK, this computer was previously sharing the connection of my parents computer upstairs but because of so many drawbacks of networking, we've decided to throw it away. So it's no longer connected to the other computer. When I try sending files over ICQ/MSN/AIM to a lot of users it does not work, I'm forced to connect to DC in Passive Mode which is useless and I can't connect to some FTP sites. These were all the drawbacks which were caused by the shared connection and they all still occur.

So basically, how do I remove the network protocols/clients which are causing this?

I'm not very good at explaining stuff like this, but you get the picture.

Any help is much appreciated.

what operating system? and what network hardware is in your pc, what firewall software and what internet conection?

I'm running Windows XP at the moment, on a standard "Cable" connection (70 k/s down/15 k/s up). I know very little about Networking as it was an expert who I got to set it up, but here's the information about the network hardware from the Network Setup in Control Panel if that's any use:

The info from the network Control Panel is:
Local Area Connection
Disabled
D-Link DFE -538TX 10/100 Ad...

Local Area Connection 2
Enabled, Shared, Firewalled
USB Cabel Modem

I have a feeling it's in the latter where the problem lies, inside it is 5 ticked boxes:
Client for Microsoft Networks
Virtual Pc Emulated Ethernet Switch
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Selector
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

I'm under the impression I need to disable one/some of these but which one? Unticking them all lost my internet connection altogether.

imm 99.9 % sure its the windows xp firewall, microsoft are so good at making firewalls they deciede to make it imcompatable with their other software products (i.e microsoft firewall doesnt let msn messenger users send files, go figure!!)

to disable the firewall goto the network controll pannel, right click on the internet conection (the USB cable modem one) select properties, select the advanced tab and disable the firewall (the first checkbox) click ok and thats done, id leave all the other boxes ticked that you described.

if you dont have any firewall software i would recomend you get some, www.zonealarm.com is a easy to setup one, imm sure other people have their own recomadations, but for ease of use zonealarms the way to go

Yep jon is right, right click on the connection and turn off the firewall. XP auto turns it on when u instal a connection.

Oh and about yr networking, well take the network card out and that will solve the problem of having those drivers coz XP will auto remove them.

However if u need the network card for yr connection then leave it

hating to piss on your fire but those drivers are needed for internet acess as well as networking...

Jon the drivers needed for networking are not needed for yr modem. So are not needed for connecting. But as he is on cable he probably uses his network card for net access.

Anyway if u remove yr network card u will see that windows removes un needed network drives, and things like my network neighbourhood will disappear

tcp/ip, qos and client for microsoft networks are all used by internet conections

I disabled the firewall, still the same MSN problem.
Thanks a lot for the input anyway, I'll try disabling and re-enabling stuff down to trial and error until I get something out of it. If the worst comes to the worst, I'll contact the guy who set up the network to disable it.

in the same tab where you disabled the firewall, uncheck the boxes under it about sharing the conection.
