New Internet Worm out there
ahoyhoy...i got some of these emails but was too smart to believe it...now i was sent this article by my sis:
Internet Worm Disguised as E-Mail from Microsoft

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A new computer worm that disguises itself as an e-mail from Microsoft Corp. is spreading, computer security firms warned on Monday.
The e-mail containing the worm, dubbed Palyh or Mankx, appears to come from [email protected], but is not from the software company.
When the attachment is opened, the worm copies itself to the Windows folder, scoops up e-mail addresses from the hard disk and starts sending itself out, said U.K-based Sophos.
The malicious program can spread itself to other Windows machines on a local area network, anti-virus vendors said.
It also can secretly install spyware programs, according to Moscow-based Kaspersky Labs in a news release.
However, Christ Belthoff, a senior product manager at Sophos, said his firm has found no evidence that it installs spyware, or a program that eavesdrops on computer users.
"This is not a widespread outbreak," he added.
The worm is programmed to expire automatically on May 30, according to Symantec Corp.
It began spreading on Saturday and has apparently infected computers in 69 countries, according to MessageLabs.
A Microsoft spokesman said the company never sends out unsolicited mass e-mails with attachments.
alas... those that don't use Outlook are safe (as usual)

We had this virus at work today 
. The virus creates a bunch of pdfs and executables, emails itself, and writes these pdfs and executables over the network via shared drives. Pretty easy to implement using VB script. I thought Microsoft had disabled VB Script in Outlook. Oh well, the company that I work at seem to have this situation under control.

the funny thing is, microsoft usually doesn't respond to my e-mails, and rarely offers good tech support. i wonder who's falling for these things!

its bad enough that i get e-mails from my bosses @ work about this worm and u gotta talk about it?

eh i had to warn the clueless TAs who dont have such caring bosses like u
well, even if it comes from microsoft support. how often do they send you attachments with their tech support? its usually written in the body of the email.

The funny thing is, the content of worms is so similar to the content of spam that almost anyone who has decent spam filtering will never receive a worm. I haven't gotten a worm in my inbox for some time, but I've seen several in the junk mail folder (they are really pretty easy to identify!).
Incidentally, the worms don't really "fake" it as being from microsoft.com. Spammers do use server exploits to fake their origin addresses (which are usually somewhere in North Korea or Nigeria), but worms just put in [email protected] as the reply address, which any idiot can do.
Bottom line is, don't open attachments you don't recognize. It's so simple. I'll never understand why so many people can't figure this out.

if your dumb enough to save an attachment from an unknown email then you deserve a virus
i just started using outlook recently and don't really know about the security features in it
i always stayed away from it since i always thought most email viruses were written to automatically execute themselves in outlook
but i have my security settings on "do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" so does that keep me safe?
ps - when will people realize that thye shouldn't open files from people they don't know...and if they aren't just a .jpg or other image file then they shouldn't open it unless they're expecting it!

shit i got around 5 of those emails the other day.. good thing i deleted them right away hehehe
