Is real hip-hop dead? and will Trance take over in the following years?

A few years back I was a hip-hop fan but after seeing that it is all became commercialized I turned to Electronic music (trance). Have any of you had the same experience? and if so do you thing that real hip-hop (not that pop shit) will become extinct and if so what kind of music will replace it, in the US and also around the World??

Real hip-hop is dead cause all the good artist were killed in drive-by shootings...

Posted by Tiger777 on May-20-2003 20:20:

lets hope so!
BUT, Rumours are, that 2Pac will come back, on the 13'th of september!!! (lets hope it's some rip off by some strange concert organisator )

Posted by SOLO on May-20-2003 20:39:

Well he's been coming back since he died so who knows, I personally think it's just a hoax.

Posted by nettwerk on May-20-2003 20:42:

I came from Hip-hop aswell, but sincerely, I hope that, in a year or two we'll be happily saying "Yeey, hip-hop is dead!"

Posted by Krazee_k on May-20-2003 20:46:

yeah, same thing happened to me... was a real huge fan of hip-hop back in the mid and late 90's, but after its been so commercialized in the past couple of years i've found myself going more and more towards electronic music.(mostly trance) Now its basically all i listen too and occasionally listening to some of my favorite hip-hop tracks from back in the day, dont really like much of then new stuff comin out these days.

2Pac's dead. It's been around 6 years since he died. And even if he were to come back he'd go right back to jail. It's very illegal to stage your own death.

Secondly, hip-hop will never die. Alot of people think that because their tastes change that the music they used to listen to will die. (e.g. Uplifting trance). Hip-Hop is still dominating the charts. There are too many people who love hip-hop too much for it to EVER die. Same with electronic music. There is plenty of really good hip-hop coming out right now. You just got to know where to look.

LOL

I never liked hip-hop and i doubt i ever will. Somethings always getting commercialized and im glad its hip-hop/rock/etc and not so much trance.

theres plenty of quality underground hip-hop if u know where to look, and which artists to look for, just as in every other music...

Damn, you read my mind!

i'm not the biggest fan of hip hop, i like my share of the cake. But i honestly think there will always be hip hop because of it's following throughout urban america

Posted by elly on May-20-2003 21:28:

i used to listen to hiphop/rap until 2 yrs ago. it was all the same crap sex money and hoes. no matter how fat and ugly are the rappers they still rap about it. trance is a pure bliss although i still listen to the old school rap from time to time

I agree with some of the things you have to say, but the hip-hop that is dominating the charts is commercialized hip-hop, were you have these so-called hard rappers singing along with pop singers! Secondly when you have seasoned rappers say "Were the last of a dying breed" (scarface) or "Fuck rap you can have it back" (Dr. Dre) they obiously dont like or think something is changing in hip-hop. Thirdly the real Hip-hop culture is not about "sitting on doves" or getting "bling bling", All I hear now from so called rappers is the same thing.

Although all I listen to is trance now, I do listen to the old hip-hop stuff too like wu-tang etc.. I'm sure there are plenty of real hip-hop heads out there, but my point is that they are NOT the majority they are the minority, and it seems to me that they have been on the decline these past few years... and I do hope that hip-hop never dies, but in this case I hope that real hip-hop never dies not the Hip-Pop that you listen to on the radio.

Posted by solidi on May-20-2003 21:46:

the majority of hip-hop listeners have no appreciation for melody and harmonics.

many listeners can not distingush the key "c" on a piano if their life depended on it

Posted by djkeenetik on May-20-2003 22:01:

trance is reemerging

yeah i can see trance being the dominant music...Trance as a genre has started to reemerge and the years of 98,99,00 are coming back....within the last year Tiesto being number has a lot to do with it i guess

Posted by djkeenetik on May-20-2003 22:03:

unfortunately if Trance becomes mainstream music it too will become commericalised...thats the sad fact of music...once there is major money to be made from the masses musicians and record companies will just keep running with the same old shite

Posted by Clyde77 on May-20-2003 22:33:

i can listen to basically any kind of music, esp when im with friends they sometimes put in their shit which is pop or hiphop, then if they're in my car i put in trance/sometimes hiphop.but that doesnt mean im noot really into hiphop. honestly, depends who im with and the environment. what matters is trance is always be my life and forever will be! nothing can change that.

i know its very sad, but isnt this the goal of everybody though?
tiesto wants to conquer to world with his music.
so does other djs and producers.

Hip-hop is hip-hop, trance is trance...one can never replace the other.

Commercialized???, what are we talking about here, the US top 20 being 90% hip hop or hip hop in general being commercialized, because hip hop is not dead, it is better known than it used to be, but as long as you filter out the crap from the good you can't go wrong. Have you heard Gangstarr's new album yet, once you listern to that then you may get back into it!.....Hip hop is not dead, nor will it die.

BULLSHIT

i hate american mainstream music!

Posted by psilocin on May-20-2003 23:09:

yeah i used to be all about the hip hop/rap until i found trance and now i doubt i will ever distance myself from any electronic music ever again - its life for me but shit some hip hops alright jus not like the majority of rappers that are wack all about the quality. Hopefully trance does come up more in the world but what pisses me off are those people that just go along with what they believe is the cool thing to be seen associated with and i imagine if trance does go on to the mainstream this will no doubt start to happen and the integrity and culture of the rave/trance scene would be corrupted by these ppl who know nothing at all about it.
But one thing i notice as soon as something becomes commercial alot of you guys out there start to hate on it whys that jus cos more ppl like it? as far as i see it if i hear i track i like then its tight whether or not its the track everyones talkin bout or a real underground one shit jus cos its commercial or mainstream doesnt neccesarily make it a bad track.

hip-hop headz could very well be saying the same thing about trance. they probably think there's no creativity, and the same formula is being used in every song. just like we have informative forums like tA to inform about the best in electronic music (not the crappy shit), it's the same for hip-hop. if you actually take the time to find good underground shit (i.e. Mr. Lif, Tonedeff, Abstract Rude Prevail + Moka Only, Swollen Members, Esoteric, Last Emperor, Cunninlynguists, Afu-ra, Gza, Grouch & all of Living Legends, Gang Starr as previously stated, killarmy & the whole wu-family, freestyle fellowship) then you would all think differently about hip-hop. the fact of the matter is, most people on this forum don't know shit about tru hh, they just hear what's on the airwaves and judge it based on that. so if you don't know anything about the genre, u shouldn't talk about it.
peace,
-reZ

You hit it on the head. BUT, i have friends right now who rap, and they are really good. Not because htye are my friends, but they have a fresh voice. New artists will emerge to be the ones that save hiphop, even if most of the shit on the radio is SHIT! Just gotta keep an eye out for the underground stuff, and as trance lovers, we all know about looking to the underground. The problem is that hiphop doesnt have the "net presence" that trance has. So to cultivate an underground scene you have to be in the right locations. The internet is international, but TO, NYC, LA, they are not.
