Chivalry....should we keep it goin??(caution: touchy subject)

so yea...the topic was started last night by graham bout buying the woman a drink..

now heres a question:

Women fight for equal rights and take it to offence when a guy says anything about what a woman shoudl do etc. which is ok cos now we are almost at teh point of equality between sexes where women are considered as good if not better than men. This IS the 21st century.

So if we are all equal now, why should Chivalry exist and women expect men to be chivalrous if they are equal? why should i open the door for her? why should i vacate my seat so that she can rest her tush? why should i let her walk before me?

im a civalrous guy but this is a question i keep pondering while i act with chivalry

Having good manners has nothing to do with people being equal...

Women dont want equality. They want better then that.
Consider: women demand equal rights, equal job pay, right to vote etc. all very well and good.

PLUS the guy has to make the first move, hold the door open, jacket if it rains etc. etc.

But meh. I'm a nice guy, i'll do it anyways. Dosn't really bother me that much.

The only thing that pisses me off is reverse discrimination ie: a women gets hired instead of a man cuz the company needs a larger female staff to be considered to be treating ppl equal, even though the guy may have better qualifications
THATS BS

theres good manners and under good manners comes table manners, speech etiquette etc and then theres chivalry which is good manners towards women in short its not like the women are chivalrous to the men...does that make them not have good manners?

That is the problem with many policies that exist within organizations. That is one of the criticims of affirmative action, why should you hire those of a visible minority if there are others more qualified for the job. But then the whole getting a job process is fairly tainted anyway because getting a job is often based on who you know, and not what you know IMO.

Anyway back to the chivalry discussion. I sort of agree with Liam, If women want to be treated fairly, then why should we place them on a pedistal by going to great lengths to be gentlemen. Don't get me wrong here, I will always give my seat up on the train for someone who needs it, I will always hold to door for the person behind me and give my sweater to someone who is cold, be it a man or women. My point is why do actions such as those I mentioned above have to be directed only at women. I mean, if we all hold the door for someone behind us, and help those who are in need, doesn't that make society better, not to mention the fact that it feels really really good on the inside when you help someone. Anyway enough of my rant

Posted by LKD on May-22-2003 16:41:

well i guess teh point is..

why is it expected from men??? while men dont expect anything like that from women??

also, i forgot to mention.
Doing something like giving your jacket to a girl who is NOT your gf (if u have one) will get you in alot of trouble

well gee. I just thought I was a nice guy.
^_^

It's tough being a nice guy.

How does the old saying go. Oh yeah

"nice guys finish last"

I may think so but I wonder what everybody else says.

But on a serious note, I know what you mean

do what you want to do?

why do you have this thread? (not bashing it...just part of the build up )

you are all human beings and you do what your want, your actions have consequences and if you want to be a prick then be a prick.

however, that said, i really couldn't live with myself being a total asshat...i'll open a door for just about anybody and it doesn't really have to be a grrl. you just do what makes yourself happy...and if being a womanizer makes you happy then do it! for me, i'll just be nice, because in the end that's how i want to be treated.

affirmative action is BS to an extent, but just remember, money buys you a whole crap load of advantages that the disadvantageous do not have! besides, a heterogenous workforce has been proven to respond better to today's competitive forces.

there was this one time when i was seated in a bus and i had sprained my ankle real bad so i couldnt stand.... ther were a group of about 3-4 girls taht came in at teh next stopa dn now the bus ws packed, so there were empty seats beside me but not enough for all of them...one ddint get a seat... before i know it, they start talking loud and start talking in third person to each other to get my attention that im an asshole cos i didnt get up...

wtf... ever since then, i dont give up my seat unless the person is old, has a with them, is carrying some heavy bags etc.

Posted by marcus82 on May-22-2003 17:38:

well, that was crap wasn't it liam

LOL...seriously that was just a bad case...but again, you have a point for just giving up seats because they are women. however, you know that you have to try and be nice from time to time you prick (and you call yourself nice) j/k

i don't think this is an issue with equality. it just seems to be a byproduct of gendre roles in our society. In other societies there are communities where women take the dominant role in certain cases. If things were 100% equal everywhere , then men would be breast-feeding their babies ..

yea tell him like it should be

Posted by Fir3start3r on May-22-2003 18:27:

I think it depends on the woman.
Blanketing all of them under that assumtion is wrong IMHO.
It's their prerogative whether we should be chivalrous or not and will take some tact on the gentleman's part as to whether he should or not.

I say, as a matter of courtesy, start out that way; if she doesn't like it, she'll tell you (or should).
