TA flash intro?

Can I make one for TA?

Posted by Redeye on May-25-2003 01:49:

we are actually reviewing a new splash screen. The problem with flash is that there are so many users on 56k that it would take them forever to laod, thats why in the past Swamper has avoided it. I'm sure though if you designed 1 and gave us a link to view it everyone would give you feedback and maybe TA could use it. Never any harm in showing your creativity

stay away from flash. flash is tacky and looks unprofessional, cheep, laggy, annoying, its sega game gear quality stuff throw into a modern day era.

I have only once in my life seen a flash design that looks the part, the rest are annoying and get in the way of basic functioning.

this is far from true, properly designed flash is just as useful as any other tool for web design. It's premature to condemn it to a "blink-tag" like death. Calling it bloated is far from the truth, in fact because it uses key framing the animations are rather small in size, and even smaller if your using vector graphics.

Fair enough to call most implementations of it lame, but the technology itself has its merits, and uses. Does TA really even need an intro?

Posted by webmeister on May-25-2003 04:30:

I'm with SuperFarStucker on this .. Flash can be used well, but most of the time it isn't. I'm not trying to rail on anyone's Flash skills, I've used it myself and know it takes a lot of effort to make something look good.

That said, only once have I ever seen a Flash intro to a site that I thought "cool!" -- most of the time I just hit skip intro
I came here to see content, not watch a Flash animation.

Plus think of the additional bandwidth it would require....

Add a couple hundred Kb's to an already annoying splash page?

Posted by xenderz on May-25-2003 06:13:

we could always put a link for fast connections or slow connection right before the flash starts..

Posted by cAtraXx on May-25-2003 06:40:

Yeah. Just put a skip link and nobody will have to watch it

Flash is big fun when you know how to use it.

... agreed!

Posted by webbie on May-25-2003 09:34:

Why not polish up the whole site first instead of an annoying splash
screen that no one will put any effort into watching?

Posted by Jah on May-25-2003 10:34:

i actually think this site has the best message board out of all the message boards ive been on... i know its under that default framework but the stuff thats uniquely TA is really cool... and the color scheme too
its simple, but effective. i dont think ive visited the main site in ages and im guess these boards generate alot more bandwith then the main pages?

if it aint broke...

Posted by DJ_D|ABL0_ on May-25-2003 10:48:

I was wondering who was gonna link to www.2advanced.com

The guy is a fucking genius - no doubt about it. Certainly shows what is possible and doesn't look tacky in the slightest. I think a flash intro is a good idea, but it's important to make it look good and not put any music on it which is going to go out of date rapidly. The filesize needs to be ultra small too.

Also, Just a thought,

Is this in the wrong forum?

Sorry coup but u have made a very stupid comment there. If you look at proffesional flash sites that have all the effects and are designed well they cna look very very nice. And also with compression technology etc you dont suffer from lag, and im sure nobody minds waiting for a loading screen.

I love some of the flash sites around, much better than html sites, just wish i could make a good one. Unfortunatly there are a lot of crap flash sites around as well

Posted by webbie on May-25-2003 10:59:

Many seem to have the idea that a site must look like, well, I dont
know what. Dont. Keep the layout simple and fast loading, the board
is slow enough as it is (yes, i find it slow) lets not lag the other
part of the site with flashy graphics and flash.

Building a site and just focusing on the graphics just doesnt work.

Seriously - intro on a website. WTF?
When I go to a webpage I want to go straight into it. I don't want to watch a fucking mini-movie if I want to go to a messageboard.

Intros are only designed to distract people from a poorly made site.

yup, what makes ta so good is its "back to basics" no flassy animations, no OTT pictures etc, just 100% quality content - the most important thing in creating a decent website, and i do agree with "if it aint broke"

personally leave it as it is, why change a winning formula, its not like there is a problem with the old one

No they're not. TA has got that picture of the funny lizard thing which you have to click on. There is no reason why u can't bypass the intro, and I dont think that it would be a forum intro anyhow?

Posted by Coup on May-25-2003 12:57:

ok maybe my comments were wrong, but there is alot of wank flash out there, i mean look at cyberdog.net theres is utter bollocks. looking at that 2advanced site, yes it is very mint, but its not very often u get good flash sites like that, most of they are sucky. if ta can make something as good as 2advanced then im all for it, but if del makes a half assed attempt like cyberdog, thats what my comments were inteneded for.

Posted by ++ EGO ++ on May-25-2003 14:17:

"flash is tacky"

...pure stupidity can not be explained in words, so where do I begin?

..Oh, I was actually talking to my friend yesturday about how this site could use some work. Don't get me wrong I still like the page and all, but a fresh new look wouldn't hurt!

Posted by webbie on May-25-2003 16:34:

The site is good but it does give out the vibe that it was put together
during a lunchbreak, little to sloppy at some points.
Maybe we could come up with some ideas on how to improve the site?
Without flash, that is. For my matter we could skip the intro image
aswell, nice render but it doesnt really serve a purpose.

Exactly. If I want to check out of there's any news on TA, I do not want to wait 10 seconds for a movie to load. Even now I don't understand why the splash page with the lizard is necessary.
