hehe this guy is cool

Posted by trintiy on May-29-2003 17:16:

This guy's Ok in my book

At a press conference in the US, Mr. Chrétien was asked about the increasing number of drugs coming across the border between US and Canada. Somewhere in Mr. Chrétien's mind, he thought that the reporter was speaking about the increase in trucks (as in trade) crossing the border.
Good Ol' Jean replied, "Trucks? It's good! Let them come across the border! We will take all we can get!"
The crowd, the country and the president of the US sat in silence.

what a moron lolz

^^^ Actually.....Jean Chretien is far from being a moron. He's actually quite a brilliant man, believe it or not. It's just that his age (65), his Bell's Pulsy (a disease that makes one side of your face droop) and the fact that his native language is FRENCH and not English make his communication image not look so swell.

I had the pleasure of meeting him in early April at my university and talked with him for 2 minutes. Really nice guy. And....let's not forget that Canada is still in the top 3 best nations in the world to live in (after being Number 1 for 8 years straight under Chretien since 1993). Where's the US on that list? At number 9!

If anyone is a moron....it's Bush. How many times can we quote him on fucked up grammar? I cringe at the number.

Just a second, according to what/whom is that so?

Canada is not the top nation, or even the second top nation, to live in.
Its population is very small, leading to few opportunities, and it lacks political and economic clout.

I agree it has less crime than the US, but by no means is the standard of living there higher than in the USA. Just look at prices the next time you go to your grocery store. Or look at your paycheck.

And by the way, I agree Bush is a moron, but Chretien can't put two words together, either -- his oratory skills are not much more impressive.

It was based on UN quality of life standards. Reports released every year.

Oops! You're from the US of A, where the UN is only united if it backs American interests.

Check yourself on the dollar issue. Canada's currency has risen recently, and our prices are lower. (Cheapest place outside of the developing world to buy legal CDs.)

Before the inflated egos get too big here, you're all wrong. From the standpoint of human development the number 1 country in the world is Norway.

Canada's currency has probably risen thanks to the U.S. dollar.

Still, Canada is second to the US in terms of people's desire to live there and the amount of opportunities (incl. job opportunities, but not necessarily).

99% of immigrants try to get into the USA. Canada is a 'backup' option. There must be a reason for that don't you think?

Posted by melech_mike on Jun-04-2003 18:41:

Norway may be in first these past couple years.... but for a handful of years before that, Canada was sitting it's fat ol' ass in the number one position.

Canada is a nice place - I've been there, don't get me wrong - but, um, nobody really gives a shit about it... lol...

EDIT: NO FLAMING INTENDED!, just a joke.

Posted by occrider on Jun-04-2003 18:56:

I sense things are only going to go downhill from here ... (straps on flame suit)

I don't see how Canada's standard of living can be higher than the USA's.

I was in Canada in 1996. I remember feeling astonished at how expensive (compared to the USA) everything was, even the food. Your money can buy you a lot less in Canada than here in the States.

Besides, the population of Canada is so small -- despite the country's vast size -- that there are very few opportunitieis and also unemployment is a serious problem.

How many "big" cities are there in Canada? Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary... that's pretty much it.

Please tell me:
How much do Canadians pay for a cable Internet connection/month, in US $?
How much does gasoline cost, in US $?
What percentage of your salary goes to taxes?
If you need a medical procedure, how long do you have to "wait in line"?
How much does a German or Japanese car cost, in US $?
What percentage of people own cars?

Posted by occrider on Jun-04-2003 19:16:

Well the ranking isn't based upon standard of living alone. It's called the Human development index which is based upon a number of other factors such as lifespan, education, etc. It does not take into account productivity such as GDP and stuff. However, it's jeuvenille to even argue about who's better than who since the top 6 nations are separated by a whopping 3/10 of a percent. Woohoo.

Hey, calm down guys. Read the thread title it was meant as a joke! You know, Ha Ha, funny funny.

OH, I get it, it's ok to make fun of other countries and their leaders so long as your country and PM is not the brunt of the joke!

I swear, it's like a bunch of little girls post on here some times. It was meant as a bit of levity. Get over it!!!!!!!!!!

Your post is discriminatory to little girls.

Spell opportunity correctly, and I'll consider this country's lack of it. By your thinking, India and the P.R.O.C. are the lands of opportunity. The small population means that there is room for growth, if anything.

We don't pay tolls for every turnpike...
We don't fork out everytime we see a doctor (30 million Americans without health insurance) we don't have a health care industry held in the death grip of private corporations.

We don't have a War on Drugs.
We don't have school boards that opt out of teaching Evolution in favour of 'Creation Science'.
We don't have an ideology of Manifest Destiny. (In other words, to us, the rest of the world is not a quaint Disney-esque backyard existing only to serve our needs.)
We aren't hated around the world for meddling in the internal affairs of other countries.
We don't hold foreign nationals on another country's soil in order to deprive them of due process.

Roll that in the stars and bars and smoke it.

Well, that's true and all of these are very good points that I wish I could say about the US. Socially Canada has a better atmosphere but it's not as prosperous or influential as the US.
