Dancing Dude Fatboy Slim and Moby...Pop Stars? This years Glastonbury Festival.

I was just reading about this years Glastonbury festival in the UK. They were saying that Moby will be headlining and that Fatboy slim will be playing in the dance tent. I was just curious if anyone has seen either of these guys live. The article refered to them as "electronica pop stars".... I would so take that as an insult! Are they any good at djing? Is anyone going to this years festival?

I saw Moby perform last summer at the Area 2 festival where he was the headline act. He was actually kinda funny to watch, because he basically runs full speed around the stage from instrument to instrument trying to play them all. He'd run to his keyboard and play some chords, then run to some bongos and go crazy on those, and then he'd run up to the center stage mic and yell "GO!" and he'd repeat this process pretty much every song. Of course, he had like a full stage of back-up singers and instrumentalists who were actually making the majority of the music, but nevertheless, it was very entertaining.

Erm... why? Is it bad to be successful?

I would like to see Fatboy Slim anyday. I like most of his work and
I have one set of him which is totally smashing.

We've come a long way, baby.

That Brighton Beach DVD looks like the best party ever. Fatboy is an awesome dj! And of course they're popstars, who cares?

As an aspiring electronic music artist and a professional musician, i would personally consider it an insult to be placed in a "pop star" category. Being held in this regard brings a lot of "unwelcome" attention to the scene. But hey, I'm not badmouthing either of them. I like music by both Moby and FBS, I'm just stating how I would view the label of pop star ->>>>>

theyu're making $50 million an album, and producing some of the best music around
I hardly think being called a popstar is going to bother them

I see Moby as an artist. And even though his songs are best when remixed(my opnion), he is still very unique.

Fatboy is a very good DJ and producer.

Seen Moby a few times. Area 1, Area 2, and his own tour with Hybrid. Would definately go again and so should you

Ive seen Fatboy Slim at Glastobury in 1999 - it was mint - although I wasnt really old enough to appreciate fully, even though he was my favourite artist at the time.

But back on track, if them being labelled as popstars doesn't affect the music in any "bad" way then why should we care. Still the same bloke producing the same quality music - only it's spread to a wider audience and he makes more money. Everyone's a winner. I dont see the problem at all

Posted by Puddlepuffer on Jun-02-2003 15:57:

technically fatboy slim is a terrible DJ. he hardly ever mixes, he mainly cuts the cued track in and out and eventually just whacks the x fader across. the only reason I respect this man is for putting on the past 2 big beach boutiques more or less on my doorstep.

if you think about it, he would no way be where he is today in the DJing aspect without his production work. That is how he manages to get sets and obviously his tie in with the boutique.

Posted by TheTornado on Jun-02-2003 16:24:

Umm... have you heard "Live at the Big Beat Boutique"? The mixing is impeccable.

Posted by Puddlepuffer on Jun-03-2003 17:52:

mate i was at the big beach boutique. and that CD wasnt recorded live u fool. and if you think all commerically released DJ mix CDs are actually mixed with the use of a pair of turntables and mixers you are severely disillusioned

Posted by TheTornado on Jun-03-2003 18:18:

Are we both talking about the one that starts out with the Incredible Bongo Band track? Sorry to cause any trouble, and I really don't think calling me a fool was necessary...

yes they are popstars because they produce pop music which is listen and played by the masses.......

Fat Boy Slim rulez

bit of a leg-end if u ask me

Posted by djkeenetik on Jun-04-2003 02:54:

yes fat boy slim is pretty PHAT

Shouldn't they be pop stars if they make pop music, not determined by how many people listen to them.

Anyways, everything I've ever heard of moby's is extremely chill and mellow, wut kinda of a energy filled set duz he drop then?
Fatboy slim definately has some killer beats under him. "you've come along way baby" ... everysong wuz amazing. But his next album with bird of prey on it. Holy shit, that whole cd sucked serious ass, not fatboy slim quality at all.

Posted by elena on Jun-04-2003 08:15:

despite them being sell outs, pop stars or whatever other label you want to place em under..theyre talented as feck!

Posted by djkeenetik on Jun-04-2003 23:04:

I guess music should be based on the quality of the music and not what Genre they fall into and both produce good music.......

Posted by RNKMSX on Jun-05-2003 18:51:

Fatboy Slim is also talented in mixing.
Big Beach Boutique was music for the masses...

Several Essential mixes (e.g. Live@Cream, Cardiff) exist where
everybody can make an own opinion. He is able to mix 100s of
music styles within a session and that can be very entertaining.
Multitalent!
Moby is a producing talent. His productions are often very special, never heared before (not like in the Trance scene where you can compare 3 out of 5 tracks).
So of course they're Popstars. PvD also.

If it sells, it's pop. "Pop" isn't a genre as such.

yes, its odd how people consider pop a genre.
