How do you afford it?
All right, so I'm almost 20 years old and would like to get into dj'ing (I'm already producing so it'd be a natural transition) but although I work whenever I get a break from studying I just can't afford to get decks/mixer/vinyls.
Then I come here and see like 12-year-old kids with the best possible gear and hundreds of vinyls... seriously, how can you afford it?!
i cut down a meal a day
and gave up the smokes.
hehe

The kids you're talking about afford it because they mum / dad / rich uncle gives them the money to pay for it all. Or maybe they're just drug dealers
There's no doubt it can be an expensive hobby, lots of people take a loan to get their first decks and mixer. Otherwise just save up, and save up some more. It's better for you and your finances if you can pay for the whole lot upfront.
I've made some money off of my art work, and errr well....it goes pretty quick these days.

I don't have those rich uncles and rich mom's and dad's
Try to get a vacationjob, i mean, 1 month working = about 1000
With that amout of money, you can buy a mixer and a TT.
I'm 25 with a lot of education and a phat job. I usually can afford about $150-$200 a month in viny. But don't tell the wife I'm spending that much!
Its easy......manage ur money wisely then the dough u have left over will go towards your equipment.
By managing my money, was able to buy a $1300 setup within a 2 month period.
Peace
Fred
Easy.
Stop drinking soda and eating candy.
Stop eating "fancy food" such as meat or such, stick to noodles,
pasta or similar.
Stop smoking or drinking.
Then you are good to go.
Like what other people said... however to keep this hobby up... it's not so difficult for me. I got a part time job and I saved up for months to buy a good setup. Seeing as I'm living with my parents and going to high school, all I really have to pay for is some clothing (however not all the time) and djing. In canadian funds I can spend around 100 dollars a week on vinyl if I need to. It's all about the part-time job. Usually however I never really have any money left over... but it's all good.
exactly what project t said....lol i know my parents 200$

actually this kids are smarter starting up younger cuz they dont have to deal with the fact that it living costs more as you get older, living at home with parents is ideal situation to save up money for ur TT's, although u may wanna save for a car, but whatever is more important to you. Like i said in the "how old where you when u started to dj" thread, I didn't start till i was 20 yrs old, and being in college paying my own way (no support from parents but thats a different story) and i had rent to pay, utilities and bills to pay, i had to eat, and i was working full time AND going to school full time, but my paycheck barely paid for the essentials.. so i bought a set of used decks (actually my 2nd set of decks were used, my first ones were fucking shitty and I shouldn't have waisted the $$, but back then I didn't know TA existed or else someone could have pointed me in the right direction from the start).. so I mean I bought a pair of used mk2's for 600, the dj i bought them from was really nice and he threw in a mixer and coffin case too cuz he felt where i was coming from, he was actually resident at a few clubs and bars and thats how he paid his tuition, so he was nice, gave me some tips and knocked a few extra bux off the end price. So basically, i'm just trying to show u that not everyone on this board are spoiled little brats that get everything they want handed to them, some of us still have to earn what we've got so don't feel bad bro.
oh btw, i bought those tables used 2 or 3 yrs ago.. and they still live and kicking like the day i bought them, i'm not a technics mechanic or anything, but i say that if financial backing is not ur strong suit, maybe consider getting used gear, u can always check it out first so if it looks bunk or plays bunk then don't buy it. but i kno some ppl are anal about getting their shit brand new.. so watevers.
Dude, I feel your pain... Im just starting out with DJing (im 19 soon to be 20) lucky I dont pay rent or anything. I pay for my equipment (I SWEAR ON THIS) with financial aid money I get from school. LOLOLOL. Guess what though, all that $1400 is gone.
I spent $300 on a used SL-1210 MKII (from eBay), another $300 on a Numark PPD01 mixer (which I still dont have - ordered it 3 weeks ago), unfortunately $500 went to summer school tuition (DAM THIEVES!), and the other stuff on vinyls. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ME!!! And guess what, I still need another turntable ($300), SKB cases ($300), whitelabel styli ($175), and more vinyl ($.. who knows)
Im already at the verge of debt... always digging a bigger hole.
BTW that money was spent in a matter of 2 weeks. You think females are bad, I can make a 3rd world country bankrupt in 5 minutes.
pappa betalar!
no but seriously. i got my first cdj-100s after last christmas, got some money as a xmas present and had saved some, then i bought it!
i'm still missing a mixer and another cdj-100s! i hope to get those when i graduate from upper secondary school (lukio) next fall. then if i don't have enough money for those, i'm going to buy it with my own money, because i'm going to get a job for about 9 months after graduating anyway. so maybe then i'll have enough money to get the gear!
as for the money that goes to CDs (i don't buy vinyl, but loads of CDs) i just don't spend money on anything else nowadays that much! i quit smoking, reduced drinking VERY much, i don't buy candy etc. etc. my mom gives me some money and i use most of it on CDs, i'm quite lucky that way, because if she wouldn't give me any money i wouldn't have anything probably!
oh and last summer, almost all the money i got from my summer job went to CDs and neccessary stuff like that!

DJ Flesch, I'm in the same boat...I'm a network engineer, but DJ twice a week here in DC. My wife is starting to open the credit card bills now...I'm dead.
I steal cars for a living. I specialise in Mercs and Beemers.
Seriously, I used to live of my residency before. Now that I aimed everything at my studies (and so gave up on a residency), I tend to spend whatever money I get in my hands.
Well I just started my summer job today and I counted that if I work for the whole summer I just might afford some decks and still have _some_ money (not much, but still) for living...
But then I encountered another problem - space.
This room is just so full of stuff that it's bursting now, where hell am I supposed to put the decks?

He's right, ask DJ Dawn to send you a pic of the corner of the room, where the setup is. Talk about space saver.

| Originally posted by skip even if you had space on a normal table, it would probably be too low and you back would end up hurting like hell when you are spinning, because you'd have to crouch pretty much unless you're very short! so you're going to need a higher table too! |
