Hello! Record Label Help

Ello TA's, i am currently at college and a few of these lads have there own record labels and they are twats because im in2 trance and stuff and they are in rock and stuff so i get treat like shit off them...i asked them where to find out information on setting up a label and they just told me to fuck off basically (the bastards). So i looked tonight and just found sum sites about how 2 go on a bout it but i want a site that will send information out and help you set it up or sumthing like that. I am asking you people if you know anywhere where i can get a start at least and find out some better stuff about my own label...this will be greatly appreciated.

thanx in advance,

tezz

Well me and Dom from these forums have just started our own record label.

U should really set it up as a 'tradings as' or sole trader company...as u dont have to piss about showing a full load of balances and shit at the end of the year. And if you do this, u might want to get you money together 1st rather than lend off the bank, because if you do get into debt, they can remove your personal belongings as payment.

We are new...havent released anything yet, but we have 1 track signed maybe 2 soon.

You need to find out about how much to offer for the tracks you are signing, think about remix costs then eventual mastering costs.

If you are looking at vinyl pressings you need to weigh up how many your realistically think you will sell. For our 1st release we are only pressing 300 copies....that may increase if these fly.

You need to take into consideration distribution, I'd reccommend amato as they specialise in trance.

Hope that helped a bit......I will be able to give you a bit more info when we have achieved a bit more.

what he said

also have an exact idea of what you want to do, for instance me and george are looking to bring over a certain sound of well produced melodic trance music, from up and coming producers - rather than shit tunes from shit producers which will sell well cos theres a cheesy vocal.

Contacts also help, although u guess you accumulate those as you get into the scene.

Good luck, and like he said, ask us for more advice.... when we've got a bit further ourselves!

setting up a sole trader or partnership, leaves open the possiblity of unlimited liability, if things don't go well, you'll be getting raped in jail

this is why we have insurance

when me & spad were finding out about setting up a shop we had to look at various insurance packages, all of which contained public liability insurance for cover up to 1,000,000 i think it was.. i know what ur on about isnt exactly public liability, im sure there will be something similar if you go to a specialist insurance broker that deals with labels a lot

lol, we are working with our own cash at the moment...so we wont have such debts.

Like I said you've got to decided whats realistically gonna be the best thing to do for you.

We are starting small so its smallish money...we wont be borrowing from the banks for a while yet.
