I love the cubs, hate sammy sosa

I actually believe him. I mean first of all he's got some big guns and he doesnt need them. Secondly unless he's started recently(like this season) he would probably have broken one a long while back. Lastly I was watching espn and they mentioned some book that a guy had written called "The physics of baseball" and the guy examined what effect the corked bat would have, and came to the conclusion that it can't add more than a few feet to your hits, so most of his homers would be homers anyways. Besides he's a nice guy, and he seems pretty decent, its certantly plausible.

But we'll know for sure in a few weeks because mlb took all his other bats he had at the stadium, if there all corked than he's in a lot of trouble.

Baseball players are alot like hockey players --they use their favorite bats/sticks and keep just the way they want them.

This incident is really similar to the 1993 Stanley Cup finals --LA vs Montreal. McSorley got caught with an illegal curve on his stick. Do you think he "didn't know" or accidently used a "practice stick"? Hell no! He cost LA the Stanley Cup because of this.

To relate this to baseball, every player customizes the bats to their liking. Every bat is given a rank from best to worst. When a ball player goes to pick up a bat off his shelf he goes for the one he thinks is the best. He knows what each bat is.

Also, what the hell would he be doing with a corked practice bat anyway?

Wasn't there an incident recentely between sosa and drugs? I heard that there was some question as to his status as being drug free. Apparentely, after a game at a press conference he told everyone that he would take a drug test any time any place ... so a reporter said "how about now?" and sammy completely cursed him out or blew him off. Not sure if it's true, but I heard it from someone.

LOL, like 80% of the MLB is on some sort of steroids

Posted by Greedy on Jun-04-2003 13:28:

all of sosa's homerums clear the wall easily . . .the man doesnt need a cork filled bat to make it.

Rasta

hahahaha thats too funny!

Wouldn't a corked bat theoretically allow him to swing a bigger bat since the weight would be less due to the corkage?

Not only does the cork make it lighter, it makes it springier too. But I've no idea what the full effect of corking is to be honest...

So why does he need a cork "practice" bat?

The major leagues have diameter limits on the size of the barrels on bats. With all the technology these days it would be possible to swing a foot wide bat.... just no one can do it 'cuz it makes a moquery of the game.

Posted by Trazedict on Jun-04-2003 18:30:

yah i hate to see this... i believe he is innocent personally. i live in chicago, been a cubs fan all my life. he uses the "corked practice bat" to show off for the fans, who love it when he hits towering home run blasts during batting practice.
i hope to god it was an accident... its not funny at all... he is such a good guy and made the cubs, the shitty shitty cubs, somewhat noticable in MLB(lol) all the fans love him and theyd hate to find out that he has been cheating this whole time...

Posted by igottaknow on Jun-04-2003 18:59:

MLB knows corking goes on all the time but they dont impose any serious penalities because more home runs = more happy fans = more money.

So sammy will be suspended for a week wow thats really tuff. Oh and I'm sure it was just a practice bat. Like a player is ever going to practice with equipment thats he can't use in the game.

dam my eyes hurting from all the eyerolling

Posted by DarkTrance on Jun-04-2003 19:32:

he says it's a pratice bat, but why the hell would he use a lighter bat at pratice, you use a heavier bat at practice so that normal bats will seem lighter to you then. Also why do you think the batters on the on deck circle take swings with the doughnut on, so that it weighs more and right when they come up to bat they've been swinging the bat with the doughnut which makes it weight more, but without the doughnut the bat seems light as hell then.

Sosa, a six-time All-Star who reached 500 career homers earlier this season, hasn't had a homer since May 1 and his power numbers have dropped drastically since he was beaned April 20

Sosa just came off the disabled last Friday after having the nail taken off his big right toe and missing 17 games.

wow what a bad time to get caught with corking a bat!! hahahaha

He said it but under diffrent curcimstances. In an interview with espn he said he was clean and would have no problem being the first one to take a test. A while later after a game some guy asked him. I remember seing it on t.v, and I think he went nuts because 1) they had just lost and 2) because the guy was being a total asshole. Seems like he was just pissed in general, I could be wrong though.

he said its supposed to impress the fans, and give them a little show when they are watching him practice
I think its an accident too...

D00dz, these guys are proffessionals. They didn't get where they are now not knowing what's going on.

There is absolutely no way this is an accident.

yea it was an accident that the umpire saw the cracked bat. LOL

although i can see why he did this. after coming back from a business trip from chicago and seeing the white sox play, chicago fans need something to cheer for. (and yes i know he plays for the cubs)

Phuck off
Tri-state area sucks ballz
You might as well take CT and make it a part of NY. New England doesn't need traitors.

Oh and by the way, yankees are going nowhere this year.
Spurs are going to sweep NJ,
and Mighty ducks are going to embarass AND HUMILIATE the devils.

You can pray all you want, and in the end I'm going to be right.
