My computer knowledge can be limited, but I don't think there's much more to it than connecting it to the IDE cable that your current hard drive is connected to, but as the slave drive. You might have to move some jumpers or something like that, but I think it's a fairly simple process. You might have to change some settings in your BIOS as well.
k.. here goes...
1st off, whats the speed of ur existing hdd? if its 5400 then connecting an 80gb 7200 one along side it (as the slave / on the same channel) will slow file transfers down a lot, it's advised to have hdd's on seperate channels.
your bios, as it seems you've got a pretty new mobo judging by your processor will read the full 80 or whatever without having to flash it, however some modern compaq's wont let u add drives above the 80gb barrier.
.. when it comes to partitioning your drive using fdisk will not work as it cant see disks over 60gb (that's using the updated 3rd party fdisk u can download) your options essentially are to
a) use the winxp cd, boot from it in order to partition it
b) download drive overlay software from the manufactuer's website - it acts as a bootdisk and will let you partition / split it up.
good luck
