computer problem with cpu

Well okay, today i got a zalman 7000 cpu cooler fan and decided to put it in.

I take out my existing cpu fan and heatsink and the cpu is stuck on the heatsink, i gently pry it out (it was easily taken off) and stick it back in the socket

I apply thermal compound and put the zalman fan on. I had problem getting the screws on and i decided to take off the fan. Well the cpu was stuck to the fan. Okay no problem, just gently take it off uh oh, the cpu slipped off and into my computer Well i pick it up and one of the pins are bent. So i think to myself its no big deal.

I install the zalman fan finally and turn on my computer. The monitor doesnt turn on. and theres no BEEP when i boot up. I cant see anything on the screen.

Did a problem occur when the cpu pin bent, or is there another problem?

btw. its a P4 2.4ghz cpu

me need help, i dont wanna fork out another $250 for a cpu

I recently thought bout chg my cpu fan but when i found out whats involved decided not to.

Sounds like u f*cked up the cpu. It could have been from the drop, bent pin, partial contact with the heat sink, screwed it on too tight... Take ur pick but who cares its not working. Take it to a professional or at least a friend who knows what he's doing, otherwise u'll wreck another cpu.

make sure the cut corner align on the CPU and board. Sometimes on the bottom of the fan there will be a plastic cover. basically here is your problem. The CPU is over heating, and it shuts itself off automatically. Make sure everything is in right and inspect EVERY SURFACE to make sure there is nothing between CPU and FAN except thermal paste.


if there isnt anything else, and power is plugged in properly, you fucked up your CPU, go exchange it saying that it was fucked up wehn you bought it. If new CPU doesnt work, something else if messed up.

check voltage on the back of the power supply, make sure RAM in all the way, make sure PC speaker is plugged into correct jumper so you can hear sounds if it IS erroring out.

check video card being fully plugged in.

you should get a bios screen if you go through the Power On Selt Test (post). you dont need keyboard, mouse, floppy, HD's, sound, NIC (net interface card), or anything. all it needs is power, a CPU, and a monitor. It loads its own vid driver before OS takes over.


last thing to do. Unplug power cord from CPU, take out the watch battery looking thing. That will reset your BIOS. Now put it back in. This CPU may use a different FSB (frontside bus) speed than your other one. Resetting it may allow it to reboot.

i doubt that i can go back and replace the cpu because they check each computer before people take it home.

is it possible that when i bent a pin and bent it back, it caused the cpu not to function?


it is difficult to see whether the cpu contacts the fan properly.

btw i forget to mention. There was a silver (aluminum?) square thing that was mounted on the cpu initially. I removed it and just mounted the zalman fan directly on top of the thermal paste and cpu.

i guess ill just have to take it to the shop on friday

u removed the alu piece on the cpu? that means u removed the heatspreader... which means u might have damage ur cpu when removing the heatspreader...which then means u are in for a new cpu...

is there any possibility that the cpu shut off automatically if it overheated? Isnt there some prevention mechanism in the bios or something?

removing the heatspreader on a p4 cpu is dangerous and could very likely be the reason why ur comp won't turn on.. p4 dont' shut down immediatly when over heated, they throttle down unless it's really hot...

hard to say... but u should always tried to someone that knows quite a bit about comps to take a look for sure. do u have a digi cam? if u do, do a closeup pic on the cpu itself.

If so, you have taken off the heatspreader, which ain't good, like they're saying (see the little shiny box thing thats bluish on top of the green square, that's the CPU core - just a cool fact). Try putting the heatspreader back on, but glue it back on with epoxy. See what happens.

my dad came and took a look and it turned out i forget to lift the cpu socket lever to put the cpu in Im a dumbass, but im happy now

Btw, is that the 2.4GHz P4 w/ hyper-threading technology 800MHz FSB? That's the one I'm looking to buy right now and wanna know how it is.

Get the 2.4C and upgrade to a 3.6 Prescott later... (or whatever the best Prescott out there is in 478-pin packaging, before LGA takes over).

mines the Pentium 4 2.40B GHz 512K 533FSB its about 50 bucks less than the hyperthreading 2.4

yeah get it, the 800mhz fsb will give better bandwith between the ram and cpu, and the hyperthreading will really make a difference so long as your using a supported os such as xp
