Alesis Monitors

Looking at a pair of Alesis M1 Active mk2 near field monitors. Thinking about getting them. They any good?

I've been wondering this myself... they look like a good deal, and SOS gave the older (mk1) model a good review if I remember correctly.

Mike, here's what SOS had to say about the mkII.

Alesis M1 Active mk2 review

Sounds like a very good review to me... plus SOS seems to really know what they are doing. I think I may get them once I get a laptop (mac or pc, this is driving me nuts), and an audio interface.

Yeah, looks good. I just read heaps of reviews about it... all good. If anything, they tend to be a little bit bass heavy, but that's fine for what I'm making. Only prob is getting a pair cheap over hear. RRP in Aus is us$1,000 which is rubbish when i see them going for us$350 in the states.

I'd rather have more bass than too little. As long as you get used to it, you (should) be able to translate your mixes easily.

$1000 US is ridiculous... what kind of taxes do you have to pay when importing stuff? Do you know what shipping is like from North America?

Also, have you looked at the *new* m-audio monitors? Do they fall into this price range? Have you read any reviews?

cheggy why dont you just have someone in the us buy them, and ship them to you. wouldnt you save a ton of dough?

I was going to buy a pair of these yesterday in a local shop, 200 aint bad at all.

Oh and the ones i was going to get were not active

I would also consider the Event 20/20bas. possibly the best monitors you can buy for their price (around 1000US)

and possibly the Behringer Truth B2031 if your budget is alittle lower. (800US)

If you are going to buy monitors, you might as well spring for a decent pair. If you decide to buy a low end monitor, you would be better off getting a high-end studio monitor headphone (beyer dt770).

I don't like using headphones. I have a habbit of turning them up too loud, and with a pair of hd-25s, that becomes quite hazzardous after a while.

I can get the alesis monitors for US$500 at the moment. I think after shipping and insurence from the states, it would be about the same.

Everything over here is expensive as hell. I was having a look at the steinberg Houston controller. aus$4,000 retail in aus, while it's retail is supposed to be around aus$1,900 everywhere else, and once you start buying from overseas, you run into all sorts of power problems, and cos these speakers are active, it would happen here too.

the dt770 is crap for use as a monitor. great for bassheads, crap for monitoring.

get some etys.

I disagree with you. The dt770's do have a coloured sound, no doubt about it, but they also have a very high detail level. The extended bass of them is also usefull for making trance, because in most scenarios trance is played on systems with overdone bass anyways. This lets you mixdown and master with appropriate bass levels for this specific type of music. If you use a more neutral headphone (like the Akg 401 or 501) the lack of substancial bass results in over compensation, and you end up with a track that has too much bass.

I would not recommend etys at all for monitoring. this seems alot worse than the 770s in my opinion, the sound is very much coloured aswell. You do have a considerable amount of detail in the sound, great for listening to music, but overall I wouldnt recommend them.

I have never heard of anyone using etys to master anyway. Im curious if you use them for this?

Well i think the M1 monitors sound like crap for that price. I just setup all the monitors at my work. The only ones i like are the mackie hr824 or hr624,event 20/20, and krk but those are way to overpriced
