92.5 JACK FM - "Playing What We Want" TORONTO, June 4 /CNW/ - KISS 92-5, "Toronto's No. 1 hit music station", today launches as 92.5 JACK FM adopting a format that has swept the country. JACK differs from conventional radio in that it programs to a specific demographic target rather than a musical genre. It recognizes that today's modern listener is diverse in all ways and is not looking for "cookie cutter" radio. "The JACK format transcends normal definitions of a radio format," said Chuck McCoy, VP and GM, Toronto Radio Cluster, and General Manager for 92.5 JACK FM. "Our listeners have been telling us over and over that they want more musical variety. They like more than one type of music and that's what they'll hear on JACK." The musical format of JACK will include a variety of genres from different decades. There is no restricted play list. Listeners will experience a range of music from the likes of Aerosmith, Madonna, and the Eagles to Duran Duran and Prince. Programming that would traditionally sound like five different stations is one music set on JACK. "More than just a change in music" said Chuck McCoy, "JACK is a change in attitude. The station's tag line, 'playing what we want' reflects the station's irreverence and 'says it all'." Rogers Media also announced 2 new appointments within the company's Toronto radio cluster. Derek Berghuis, VP and General Manager, 680 News has been given additional duties and has been appointed General Manager of the FAN 590. Julie Adam, former Program Director of KISS 92-5, has been appointed General Manager and Program Director of CHFI. Rogers Media Inc., a division of Rogers Communications. Inc., operates Rogers Broadcasting and Rogers Publishing. Rogers Broadcasting has 43 AM and FM radio stations across Canada. Television properties include Toronto multicultural television broadcasters CFMT (OMNI.1) and OMNI.2, televised and electronic shopping service, the Shopping Channel, regional sports channel, Rogers Sportsnet and the management of three digital television services. Rogers Publishing produces many well-known consumer magazines such as Maclean's, Chatelaine, Flare, L'actualit and Canadian Business and is the leading publisher of a number of trade publications. All media properties are integrated with their own popular web sites. lol @ Your friend's comment.
Yeh what a shock. I'm in TEARS. lol more power to the new station.
Wicked news, that station was shit. All they ever played was top 40 and hip-hop.
Thank God, They were ok when they came out until they started playing the same song about 15 times a day. Funny though, I thought Kiss 92 was amongst the highest rated stations in Toronto and this sorta came outta nowhere. Oh well, no real loss...and Jack is fairly good, I don't mind it at all
but i wonder if having KISS go off the air will make 103.5 more mainstream/hip hop oriented. i had always hoped that they would veer off in a more dance music direction. i mean, like the digital TV chanel BPM, it's mostly Euro. but they have some more undergroud stuff as well. i would handle a radio station like that easy. it seems viable enough.
taraxo
toronto radio sucks ass
cept 680 news...when ya need news
frankly I've given up on the radio
Matt the Hammer Wreggit claiming...danny d is the greatest
playing radio edits of songs that i heard played out a year before
besides the history of new music with alan cross and the chumfm sunday funnies...frankly I listen to sets and cd's.
PFFFF you think toronto radio is bad?!!?!
Try Edmonton radio, basically the only choices are top 40 /rock/classic rock. I'd kill for an electronic station.

When Global Groove goes live to air some nights --
Usually after 12:00pm - Mystic Mike is halarious, it is the most unorganized radio show in the nation but they play killer tracks and are halarious!!
I actually like this station better than Kiss 92. Can hear some good 80s
i wake up to Kiss92....or used to wake up to it.
I'm disappointed...but oh well. I'll have to find a new station to wake up to...
Lol that's funny, in Ottawa we had a station change it's name to Bob. In TO it's Jack. Who is the marketing 'genius' behind this? Radio sucks anyways, better to pick your music than get spoon fed garbage.

| Originally posted by Time2Burn Sounds like dumb marketing ploy to me. WTF is Jack? they claim its some new fancy special music formatt. To me it sounds like the same old bs in a different package. When the hell is somebody gonna realize that the electronic music scene in Toronto IS economically viable and bring us a hip new cutting edge station that plays only the goood shit? |
hehe ..

| Originally posted by Dr. Trance on tribe.ca on 03-12-02 Thanks for everything Basically, what it has come down to is this: Iceberg Media is run by suits who have no clue what they're doing. They know nothing about broadcasting (web casting), and they make no effort to learn. The CEO of this company is a book seller, for fuck's sake (he was the CEO of Indigo.ca). When a book doesn't sell, you take it off the shelf and put another one on. When the initial 6 Iceberg channels didn't sell, he put 300 (!) new ones on the shelf with Bonzaroo, which is one giant juke box playing every kind of music imaginable. One would think it would be easier to sell ads on THAT puppy, but it hasn't happened yet, maybe because of the CEO's bright idea to restrict listeners to Canada because he figures you can't sell ads in the U.S., where many internet audio sites have gone out of business in the last year. The problem is, most of those sites were purchased by Clear Channel, which then shut them down to avoid competition with their 1700 radio stations. So our CEO's logic is a bit warped in this case (hell-in all cases; the guy's a dildo). At any rate, it turns out that with our live DJs, it cost over twice as much to keep us running as any of the other channels here that are all automated. The figures didn't compute, and since this guy knows nothing of our scene and what makes it tick, he doesn't realize that without the live djs, we...sorry, HE will lose a lot of listeners. BY the way, we were far and away the most listened to channel on the Iceberg site, and for that I, and everyone who worked very hard to keep this project going over the past 3 years, thank you very much. See ya 'round! don |
Man, some of the stuff they say on Tribe about the radio business is scary. How would like to be taken out to lunch with your coworkers, then discover that you've all been locked out of the building and fired?

They also switched one of the newly formed hip-hop stations in Calgary to Jack as well. EXACT same format. Must be part of the same media group. I wish I knew how it was doing there. I'm guessing the T.O. one will follow the same path......
Man, Looks like Tarzan Dan is out of a job again. man that guy has worked so man different places in th lasat 10 years. I wonder if he ever gets sick and tired of having his employers go out of business. As well as being pushed out of the Hitlist (or quit I dunno).

I remember when that show was so cool, hahaha... Then they switched it over to these two crazy-ass ditzes...
hmmm is it a coincidence that every radio station tarzan dan works at scraps their format?
anyways, Z is trying to get a license to start a radio station in Edmonton with the same format. So Edmontoners, get ready for some bon jovi with your ja rule
