Mr Mystery!

Alright now, I d/l a set mixed by my fellow Finn Mr. Mystery. Being a bedroom dj myself I naturally pay very close attention to the mixing. I listen to the first 30 mins or so and I can't find anything to complain about.

Nothing especially weird about this.

BUT

Then I browse the Dj booth and find an interesting topic. The same old Mr Mystery crying his heart out about the equipment being so f'n pricey.

What the...?

Wait a minute!

This guy mixes a set that gets posted on TA, and he doesn't even own turntables, not to mention a mixer for christ sake!

Later on I find out that the set was mixed using Virtual Turntables, a mixing software also familiar to me.

So basically I find a guy who seems to have less experience on mixing than I do, but he's hands down a thousand times better at it than I am!

I want to hear the words "I started a month ago" from your mouth Mr Mystery, 'cause I have a feeling we might be talking about the next Orkidea here...

Oh, and I almost forgot: Yes, I AM jealous!

he is a talented DJ, that's correct. He's also a producer, that's probably why he has such a knack for music. That mix was created using only songs CREATED by tranceaddicts.

very good mix, i reccomend all TA DJs download it.

Well it's not like I mixed the damned thing live!

I am not a DJ, not even remotely. I know vaguely how to but I've never actually DJ'd in my life. What I did with the Unite mix was all planned in advance and tweaked to perfection (oh, the joys of software) because the focus isn't supposed to be in the mixing but in the tracks.

So the reason the transitions work is because I practiced them beforehand and if they went wrong I tweaked/re-did them. That's all.
It's also true that I am a producer as well which may give me a certain ear about these things. Then again I have never taken a music lesson in my life or know anything about music theory so what do I know

Oh, i thought you did mix it live, using VTT. what program did you use then?

Posted by Technaut on Jun-07-2003 09:36:

sorry, and im not just saying this cause i dont like the guy

the mixing on that CD 'TA' made was rather shocking IMO

the structure on it was also poor

i cannot understand why they didnt get a DJ to mix it instead : /

just my 2 cents.

Maybe you wanna do it the next time? Have you got a fucking clue what the job includes? It's not just mixing 2 tunes together, sometimes I have to re-master the tunes, cut them, edit them etc.
We DID get a real DJ to do it too but he couldn't do it all.

Now please discontinue to blurt out your jealous bs, please.

Look, I have no idea what's your beef here but just saying "this is shit" without giving any kind of tips or pointers OR reasons really doesn't make me believe your statement. (And isn't exactly my idea of "civil" either )

If you don't like it - fine. I don't expect everyone to like it, I made it to fit my personal tastes. But if you don't like it then you could at least give me some pointers on what you would like it to be like instead of telling me everything in it is shit in a very bitter manner.

Posted by Technaut on Jun-07-2003 10:10:

I dont think you coud take any pointers from me so why should i list any for you just to pick through them and shoot them down? Shit? not shit, just not good, in other words poor.

in summary.........

your mixing is poor
your set structure is poor

tips to help:-

work on your mixing
work on your set structure

Dont go out and start any fires or hurt people because of what I said.

Have a nice day
