/me ripped off?

Heyz all,

I recently heard from a friend of mine that there was a track in Jon O'Birs list that had my name as the remix artist on it. I went to have a look at it and indeed, there was a certain (Lightworks Remix) in his list... which wasn't mine.

So, I contacted Jon O'Bir and he told me to contact the person that had contacts with this artist. I sent him a mail also trying to give me some info on how to clear things up.

My Lightworks project exists for about 2-3 years right now, and at that time when I chose it, there was no musical name like that yet. Though, I have some releases pending under this name, I was wondering what consequences this might have? Can the other artist just carry on with this?

Regards,
LW

a friend of mine had the same problem, he is signed and suddenly there was a new release with the same artist name.
his label sorted it out for him, so i guess ur label and the other label will work it out aswell, otherwise just mail `em

greetz,

mantis

btw. gooi es wat berichten uit je pm, ik krijg nix meer gestuurd

it generally goes like this: depending on who released first, one of you will have to change ur name (namely the second person released).. see vaiio > iio.. sony already had an artist signed under vaiio

but yes i would say that it is for the labels to negotiate.. if you have copyrighted works dating back to before this person released under the name then you may have a leg to stand on regarding keeping your name - although i am unsure about that

Cool

tell paratraxx now, because you have been signed to them for ages lol so they can sort it out, and if you need furthur proof, your mp3.com page can be backdated aswell.

even if you do lose your lightworks name which i doubt very much, icone is much better

ok thx... i'll go ask my label

The track on O Birs site is labelled as Mark Otten - Mushroom Therapy (Lightworks Remix)

now I'm pretty damn sure it was (Lightscape Remix) as I have mp3s labelled as that. I pretty certain Jono made a mistake.

hehe, good one

well, if it's 'Lightscape' then i'm pretty relieved. I've contacted the one in contact with the original artist(s), he said he was gonna 'inform the boys'

you know...a little advice to everyone hear...if you are really serious about producing your music you need to have BUY your name. i know that it sounds funny, but basically it boils down to this. you need to register yourself with the department of copywrites and patents (i forget the exact name, but something like that) because leaving it up to the labels is good, but technically if he is registered with that name and you aren't then he technically owns it and you have to change yours. now, it sounds like this was just a mistake, but if it wasn't you can see the complications. just something to think about. i'll look around for a link for those of you that are interested in this...

EDIT::

here is a great link for the business of music

and more specific, this is what i was talking about above...

note: I've definitely got something cooking...hope to get a sample up soon for some needed feed back ...

Thx Floorfiller, i'll have a look into it. My name isn't registered yet though, so I might wanna do this asap. All in all, in the name of good faith, this should never be a problem though, even if one of the two is registered

Cheers,
LW
