UK, Powerful Country or just a country that follows others

I was just wondering what the rest of the world thinks of britain. Fact is we were once the most powerful nation on earth but now are we still up there or are we just following the orders of others (most notably bush's)?

I think the whole structure of control has turned to shit. I this country we seem to take order on world issues from George Bush and soon we'll probably join the single european currency and hand over control of our economy to the rest of europe. This is going to cause majour problems with interest rates and probably send house mortage payments through the roof.

the whole control structure is more of corporate power IMO...transnational corporate bodies are the true wielders of power in the global economy, and quite frankly it's really scary.

actually joining the euro will most likely have the inverse effect. we won't join it this time round but most likely will in 2009 which i think when the next offer is.

You were, but now I doubt you'd make it in the top 10 most powerful nations list.

The UK is the 4th largest economy in the world.

http://australianpolitics.com.au/fo...economies.shtml

Militarily I'm pretty sure it is also powerful. It was a big spender during the Cold War.

Posted by DrUg_Tit0 on Jun-09-2003 13:40:

Hmm, let's see...

1. US
2. China
3. Russia
4. India
5. Germany
6. France
7. Japan

Ok, I guess I'd put you in the 8th place.

Posted by occrider on Jun-09-2003 13:48:

I would def rate the UK above India. The UK has a bigger economy and is def more technologically advanced.

well the uk has the foruth largest economy in the world supposedly so i would say that we would be above india but japan is probably more powerful than us as it has a strong economy and is very technoligically advanced. Russia is not the power it once was but still has a large population and is still reasonably powerful.

Fix their teeth and they'll get more face time. I see Britain as a big business country that's limited by it's geographic size. I'd definitely put them high on the list though. Their sphere of influence goes a long way.

It's true ... how can you fight against a country full of james bonds, exploding pens, and laser wrist watches?

On a serious note, I don't know about the art of war, but I'll disagree and say that the US is more technologically advanced with regards to weapons.

I know Britain is currently the world's 4th largest economy, but I didn't make my list based only on economic situation only. Militarily wise, India is at the same level you are, since you both have nuclear weapons, so any large scale conventional warfare is ruled out. Aside from that, it has 20 times larger population, faster population growth, is capable of launching its own sattelites into orbit, has larger computer hardware industry, and a larger movie industry. It also has a significal regional influence while the British regional influence doesn't go much further than Ireland. Therefore I still say India is more powerful than Britain.

it makes relatively little difference as most of india is impoverised. their economy cannot fund their armed forces and their technology does not compare to us, especially our marine and navy forces. the technology india would use to launch nukes could be taken down very easily. india was at the end of the day only what it is now due to being part of the great british empire, which i still do not see the empire as ever being a good thing in so many ways.

Posted by Dj O'Callaghan on Jun-10-2003 00:26:

Britain has one of the best if not the best trained army in the world, The Special forces are brilliantly trained SAS SBS etc, plus the Marines and Para troopers your lucky if about 5% of enterants actually get in. Their intelligence MI5 and MI6 are top notch may be a small country but I wouldn't want to fuck with them.

Drug Tito India is a large country with a big population but its got fucking huge poverty problems like people still live in mud huts etc, and probably of half their weapons are probably world war 2 standard, and to join their army it wouldn't suprise if they only had to be able to run a mile, do 10 press ups, and 50 sit ups lol.

Posted by DrUg_Tit0 on Jun-10-2003 13:00:

All of that is true, but the sheer number of people outweights all those setbacks. If 800 million indians are living in mud houses, they still have 200 million who are not, compared to 50 million brits. And while their army is not as trained as the british, for each british soldier there are 20 indian ones. Besides, India is accelerating its technological development in the last few years. I still haven't seen Britain launching its own sattelites or producing computer hard drives. The british are stronger per capita, but they should be stronger 20 times in order to balance things out, and they are not.

Posted by marcus82 on Jun-10-2003 15:03:

have you read sun tzu's art of war?

just curious, since numbers don't mean nothing when your army disorganized and poorly trained (in relativity of course). in modern warfare foot soldiers are nothing when compared to the raw fire power of integrated fighting systems of APCs, Tanks, and air power...i don't think india has that level of sophistication and organization miltarily.

lastly, if britain and india ever did get in a war, i doubt and highly doubt any nuclear missiles will be launched. however, if we are going to compare nuclear arsenal then india's arsenal is only rated as far as sub continental, while britain's is inter continental, thus giving britain first strike capabilities.

Posted by occrider on Jun-10-2003 15:07:

Also the US will probably equip Britain with its Anti Ballistic Missile shield system

Posted by kal007 on Jun-10-2003 22:48:

I reckon we could pack a punch if we wanted to.

We might not be very big, but what we have got, is pretty damn good.

hmm, i wonder what sort of damage all the SAS and SBS squadrons could do to a country. Them alone could technically bring a country to its knees , well certainly cause big issues for the enemy.

Personally i don't think we will have the chance to find out, cos i don't think there are many countries that would be willing to start, specially with the likes of the US on our side.

But then, with all the terrorist attacks and stuff, that seems to be the new cheap war strategy.

So...who knows.........WHO DARES WINS !

hmm 1 daisy cutter agianst a group of unorganised indians with stick, i know who i'd bet against
