logic bomb review

after missing them last year because i only found out they were here after they left, i was determined to see them this time!

i got to room at about 11. the side room was open with the main room to open at 12. the dj was playing some breakbeat which i thought was pretty good. he played a breaks remix of 'coldplay - clocks' which brightened me up and i thought i recognised another track off a anthony pappa cd i had. he also played 'Origene - Sanctuary (Traveller Remix)' and i thought the last track was alright so i asked him, it was 'Afrodeep Vs Kult Of Krameria - Good Vibrations'. I liked this guy, i don't know any breakbeat but it was good stuff. The place was decked out alright too, there were lanterns hanging and incense burning, a big buddha mural on the wall, it looked alright. i hadn't been in the side room before.

the place was bloody packed too, even in the little side room getting up to 12 there were a lot of people. the main room then opened up and everyone streamed in to the sounds of 'shagga' on the turntables. what a joke this guy was. the music was alright, most of it sounded like it was on dragonfly records and might have been a bit progressive for my liking but he was the first main room dj so he had to warm up and take it easy i guess. there were no missed beats; thats mostly because i don't think he was even trying to match them in the first place! i think the first or second transition was just waiting for the record to stop then starting the next one! argh. i thought the whole set was badly or non-mixed, it was just wierd. the music was only average too, i just couldn't get into it. it might have been that i was tired i dunno.

the next guy, 'dr b' was a bit of an improvement. he picked it up a bit and mixed a bit better, he actually seemed to beatmatch, then bring in the next track but again a lot of it just seemed to be matched then instantly cross-faded at innapropriate times. now this was the first psy-trance event i've been to and i didn't know any of the tracks they were playing so it might have been my ears but thats what it sounded like to me. he was dancing around a bit too which was alright but again i just couldn't really get into it. it was up and down and fast then slow and i dunno, i wasn't enjoying it. the crowd seemed to be though.

and what a crowd! if 5am got anywhere near this many people it would be a miracle! it was like pvd and oaky at QBH, just packed. and there was quite a...varied...assortment of...interesting people too. for one thing it looked like an older crowd than what i've usually seen out. it seemed like everyone was there, skips, wogs, asians, glamours, hippies and freaks, and 'normal' people too i was suprised with the asians, i don't really recall seeing many if any at all out clubbing. maybe psy-trance is more multi-cultural hehe. hell, there was even a short old lady with one leg going spastic on the dancefloor with crutches!!!

while i was coping with the crowd for a while i did start to get annoyed. i kinda feel like whenever i go out and theres a crowd that i am somehow invisible, that nobody sees me so they just walk through/in to me. i mean when i want to go somewhere i usually tap on the shoulder or try and get through without pushing people and at the very least say 'excuse me'. but it seems like everyone else doesn't seem to do that

and far out, im getting sick and tired of gurners! argh! the way these drug fucked idiots just bounce around flailing limbs everywhere gives me the shits. i just don't get it. if you want to take drugs then do it in your own time at your own place, or anywhere not around me. and don't give me any of that 'enhancing the experience' bullshit either. if you need to abuse substances to have fun then you have a problem. i don't need sweaty idiots with stupid grins on their faces bumping me around and trying to burrow through my shoulder with their head. it just annoys me.

and i swear i saw the wierdest thing since i've gone clubbing. up on the right hand side facing the dj booth is like a raised level where people dance. a security guy was trying to move people off it, i thought maybe something is going to happen there or maybe thats where logic bomb were going to set up their equipment.
now picture girls dancing on a podium in a club. replace the girls with a guy. the guy is wearing a wetsuit. it has silver stripes. he has phat pants glowing material hanging off his legs. he has a wierd kinda flouro green mask with lots of thin little spikes. he has cds strapped to his ears, and is wearing goggles and a snorkel, with glow sticks and a torch hanging around his neck. replace the podium with a big fish tank. now what kind of wierd mental images is that giving you! this guy looked drug fucked as well as he stood on the fish tank making stupid praying and diving motions before getting in the tank (which was only just big enough for someone to be in there) and started rolling around. fucking hell that was the wierdest and stupidest thing i think i've ever seen. he gets up and squirts someone with the water ffs! and there was someone filming him too! far out. he played with crystal balls and stuff as well. what the hell was that all about i don't know. some "spiritual message and exhibition" from the tree-huggers at earthcore i'm sure.
i just tried to ignore it and concentrate on the music, which was better than the first dj but again i just couldn't really get into it, it wasn't really exciting me and i found myself constantly looking at my mobile hoping it would say 3am and wishing the dj would stop. even the dude from logic bomb seemed to be enjoying him as much as i was. i haven't seen someone waiting to come on look as bored as he did. just sitting there, waiting for him to stop. even when he said 'ok i'm on now' or looked like he was going to start, the dj was like '1 more!' and went on for another 15 mins or so....

now so far (if u are still reading) you might be thinking 'far out phil sounds like he had a shit time'. well u would be right. up until 3am i thought well this is pretty average and i was even wondering if i wanted to go to another psy-trance event if they were going to end up like this. but then logic bomb stepped up...
you know that feeling when u are out and its all been shit so far, but then the main event or the people you wanted to see turn up and suddenly its the best night ever? this was one of those times. thats gotta be just about the best 80 mins of music i've ever heard! it was bloody brilliant!!! it just transformed the night from average to great. it was so good, so energetic and powerful, i didn't want it to stop! i only recognised one track and i don't know the name of it but gee it was good stuff. the set times said they were on from 3-5 but he (there was only one dude performing) stopped after 80 mins. we all shouted and screamed and we got one more track and then that was it. i would have liked to have heard 'datalinks' but that was probably too slow for the crowd hehe. also the tracks j00f played at globabl gathering but they weren't played either. argh it was the best shit though! and i think most of it was new material or stuff i haven't heard anyway hehe.

i didn't hang around for much longer because the 2nd dj came back on and i thought fuck this. i was pretty tired and wanted to go home as well so i had another look around and thought 'nah i'll just go'. so i walked outside and waited for a taxi to turn up, and then logic bomb came out to leave as well. haha talk about your jet-setting, high-life djs! his mate was taking him home in ye olde datsun 200!! lol!! i went up and said "thanks a lot, for a good set, i really enjoyed it because before you guys i wasn't having a good time" and he said "thank you man!". i thought 'ooh this might be a good chance for an impromptu interview' so i asked if they were going to make a new album or anything and he said "nah not now but maybe next year, i am working on making my own music for the moment, my partner, he...not in good spirits right now!" haha exclusive news broken by philby, there could be trouble down the track! he said "the crowd was pretty crazy, yeah?" and i said yeah, i thought it was too, i hadn't seen it this packed. i said i've been here a few times for a melodic/uplifting trance event but it isn't as popular here and said "yeah its a shame, you need to kind of spread it out", i think he meant like having different genres or something in the events i dunno. i asked if he knew j00f and he said "no we don't know him personally, not friends with him but he plays our music so yeah...hes a good dj yeah?" and i said "yeah my favourite " i didn't really know what else to say, i was kinda nervous hehe and i didn't want to hold him up so i just thanks a lot again and he said "no thank you" (in this great russian kind of sounding accent, it was mad hehe) and we all left .

so yeah there u have it, overall a pretty dissapointing event for me but logic bomb made it all worthwhile as i knew they would. shame only one guy was there though. it was just awesome music, i couldnt believe how much i was enjoying myself listening to him perform compared to the other djs but oh well. there was no sign of aaron smiles either which i was looking forward to seeing though. now lets hope that astrix in september can beat logic bomb!

ps
sorry for the essay but thats what i felt and i wanted to get it out of my system

good write up. Though i now have a rather strange mental image of a wetsuited cyalume freak. No stranger than it actually was i guess.

Re: logic bomb review

great review. sure its an essay but it's the lil personal touches/experiences reflected which i find enjoyable to read.

*grin*
asians aren't all geeks who stay at home and do homework. they do club, however, electronica isn't exactly a genre that's most preferred amongst them, hence why you you'll only see few around. they have a tendency to stick to their ethnic nights too. they're scene is very different tho. one that's more based on a superficial and materialistic level. a chance to show off their sooped up cars for the guys, and for girls, to pack on the make up. it's a scene that's never been primarily about the music. perhaps a stereotype, but one that's not far off to my belief.

being a psy trance/goa? kinda event, i'm not surprised of an elder crowd tho. the genre is actually more spiritual than others in electronica. a mate who i bump into every now n then was actually introduced to psy/goa through his family [parents/cousins]. odd, as you would think his taste for psy would evolve from a more commercial sound first, but it was never the case. i remember askin his thoughts of astral projection, and he remarked they were very commercial. he tells me of these events, which are similar to the hyperactive nights that happen, where you ring before the day of the event to find out where it's located, having a meeting point first, where ur then given directions to the location? [ala "groove"] very intimate gatherings, on occasion, he told me, a bunch of monks would attend. they'd medidate first, and later go off to the music. imagine that, going off with a bunch of buddhist monks! that'd be an experience!
