filesizes when coverting to mono?

I noticed that when you covert a stereo WAV file to mono, it halves the filesize. When i tried doing the same thing for mp3 and ogg, I noticed no difference in filesize at all. Could someone explain the reason?

mp3+ogg are compressed audio, one of the things the compression process does is to look for similarities with the left and right channel and merge these together, and if there are any unique sounds to save these sepereatley. when it is decompressed (played) the program will reqcreate the individual chanels from the merged channel and add the unique sounds back to the chanels as well.

sorry if that sounds confusing its early morning and i cant think stright!

What he is trying to say is that the file uncompressed will show a large difference in file size, but when compressed the difference is minimal. Due to the high level of compression on mp3s.

I see . I didn't consider that it would actually look for similarities in the two channels.
