It's sad even if it isn't fake!

Posted by Fast Turtle on Jun-25-2003 18:59:

It's apparently real, but the site was originally third party, I think.

http://drs.yahoo.com/S=2766679/K=ht...x.php%3fx=links

cached site

zoneh also has it on their list of hacked sites today
http://www.zone-h.org/en/defacements

hackers usually put their nicks and IRC channels in (look at the others)

these brazilian kids need a life...

Regardless of what anyone wants to tell you, I'll tell you right now that this is 100% FAKE. Here's why. If you go to http://www.internic.com you can do lookups to see who registered what domain names, and where that domain name is currently hosted.

Here is the information for the site that was "hacked":

quote:

Domain Name: THEMATRIX-MOVIE.COM
Registrar: GO DADDY SOFTWARE, INC.
Whois Server: whois.godaddy.com
Referral URL: http://registrar.godaddy.com
Name Server: NS1.STARLIGHTHOSTING.COM
Name Server: NS2.STARLIGHTHOSTING.COM

Status: REGISTRAR-LOCK
Updated Date: 09-jun-2003
Creation Date: 16-may-2003
Expiration Date: 16-may-2004

Do you really think that Warner Brothers used http://www.godaddy.com to register their site? Nah...I didn't think so, either. That not good enough for you? Take a look at the creation date of May 16, 2003. Seems a bit odd, don't you think? Yeah. I thought so too. Also, note where the name server is located: ns1.starlighthosting.com Now....I don't know about you, but I think that Warner Brothers could do a little bit better than a company that offers 2 GB of space and 40 GB of bandwidth as their number 1 package.

Let's take a look, for comparison purposes at the info for http://www.whatisthematrix.com

quote:

Domain Name: WHATISTHEMATRIX.COM
Registrar: REGISTER.COM, INC.
Whois Server: whois.register.com
Referral URL: http://www.register.com
Name Server: NS.WARNERBROS.COM
Name Server: NS2.WARNERBROS.COM
Status: REGISTRAR-LOCK
Updated Date: 25-apr-2003
Creation Date: 06-may-1998
Expiration Date: 05-may-2004

That info looks a little more accurate, don't you think? STILL not satisfied? Let's look at the info for http://www.matrix-themovie.com

quote:

Domain Name: MATRIX-THEMOVIE.COM
Registrar: REGISTER.COM, INC.
Whois Server: whois.register.com
Referral URL: http://www.register.com
Name Server: NS.WARNERBROS.COM
Name Server: NS2.WARNERBROS.COM
Status: REGISTRAR-LOCK
Updated Date: 25-apr-2003
Creation Date: 27-sep-1997
Expiration Date: 26-sep-2004

I think that should clear things up. Any questions? Didn't think so.

Hate to burst your bubble but I have three. Did you ever consider the fact that this was NOT an official site? Did you ever consider the fact that a site other than simply the official one could have been hacked? Did you read the post earlier in the thread about that site which reports defacements? Didn't think so.

Question 1: Yes, I did.

Question 2: Yes, I did.

Question 3: Yes, I did.

Now...my point in all that is this. Obviously that site is set up to look like the official site had been hacked. It would simply be denial for anyone to argue otherwise. Sure, there is a possibility that the unofficial site was hacked, but let's be realistic about this. Do you honestly feel that someone who had the skills to truly hack a site, and deface it would be stupid enough to leave contact information available? I sure as hell wouldn't.

RIAA hacks are great, the Madonna site hack was classic as well

Yes. Look at the other defacements on that site. Most of these hackers aren't american, and I think brazil has more lax laws towards this kind of thing. Aside from that, if someone was smart enough to hack a website, they're probably smart enough to protect themselves on IRC. An IRC server I used to frequent had an attacker who'd proxy through a lot of different IPs so it'd be impossible to ban or identify them.

The group claiming responsibility for it also seems to have done several thousand other defacements if you check http://www.zone-h.org/en/hallofshame

Youre right, great hacks indeed.

Poor bastards

Posted by DJ_NRG on Jun-26-2003 02:02:

OK...I'm gonna say it now before someone else does. I was wrong, and apparently this was a legitimate hack. If you check out the site now, it appears that it is back up and running. Hey....at least I can admit it. But, I digress...hit the real site to impress me.
