advice need: Whats the best mixer I can get for $100 - 150 USD?

Greetings all, well to sum it up...

summer = more work
more work = more money
more money = turntables + mixer

I'm pretty convinced to buy Technics 1200 (mk's i think?), but if anyone has any suggestions for other technics, it would be greatly appreciated.

My initial question is what mixer to buy? I'm pretty clueless about mixers because the only one I've used in my life was a cheapy "american dj" one that looked very...err, toyish? I suppose I'm budgeting 100 - 150 us dollars to buy a mixer, but what to buy? To make suggestions easier, I'm not too picky, I don't want a beat-matcher, and I don't think I need all the detail knobs to the sounds just yet. So is 100 - 150 cool? Or should I just throw in some more cash for a better one? Once again ANY suggestions would be awesome help! Thanks all.

ps. Indeed I did do a "search" but most of the threads I read was "best mixer" not "budget mixer" or anything like that.

Excellent Mixer for what it costs.

Yup, have to agree. If you're poor like me, the VMX300 is your best bet for the price.

Have you tried the djm600 clone yet? I'm interested in that one.

Not yet! they are not available yet!!! If you see one available on other sites or it has a certain due date, do not believe it. It is BS..... I'll let everyone know when it comes out.

Will do, always keeping my options open, thanks.

Dj tranz I heard a lot of negative things about the vmx300's, it looks pretty good tho. I guess for 150 i cant be complaining about what mixer is good and whatnot. Ill PM you if i decide on that mixer. Thanks man.

And what might that be?

Posted by Tiger777 on Jun-26-2003 19:36:

I'm interested to hear that too... Negative things? The vmx300 is the best mixer in it's price scale!

When i was reading through old threads about comparisons with decent-priced mixers it seemed that the harshest remarks were against behringer, or more specifically the vmx300's. It was always like "DO NOT BUY BEHRINGER IT SUCKS!", exactly like that, with all the capital letters and all. Numarks, stantons, vestexs, etc. on the other hand had negative remarks as well, but they weren't so bad, or to me it wasn't so bad. They would say things "vestax's crossfader is too stiff" or "after using xxxx mixer i would never go back to my old stanton". Minor remarks like these compared to the more harsher remarks against behringer just stuck to my mind and so i have this mentality that behringer isn't so great.

I don't know though, I never used any mixers except one so i guess i shouldn't say anything. Oh btw...doesn't vmx 300s have a beat matcher anyway?

Posted by Tiger777 on Jun-27-2003 00:12:

ya, it does have a beatmatcher, but i cover it off since it only destracts me...

Baaah, don't beleve them. It's the "only buy technics if you want to be a good dj" attitude. I mean, the behringer DJX700 is an EXACT copy of the pioneer DJM600... Only difference: The price. Any why? 'cuz behringer makes the parts in the country of destination itself. That saves alot of money on port costs and taxes. So, in fact, When you buy a pioneer djm600, alot of what you pay on it, goes to the governments of the countries the mixer passes...

Posted by TwiloNYC on Jun-27-2003 04:38:

I thought the DJX700 is a copy of the DJM 500, but just silver like the 600... considering it doesn't have the sampler. I'm interested to see how it performs, considering how much cheaper it is to the Pios.

Well it's a copy of both, the pioneer djm 500 and 600. Actually the sampler on Pioneer djm600only hurts the sound quality of that mixer, and out of a few dozen people that I know that have djm600, none of them use the sampler.

IMO both djm500 and djm600 are POS. decade old 16bit technology that has no plans for change, when everyone is already using 24bit technology, even the entry level mixers such as Numark and Behringer.

Vestax mixers have gone down the drain, we even stopped selling their line of mixers, except for the last one that we are getting rid off, the pmc250 for only $399.95, and that's it for Vestax,Come to think about Vestax being so bad, we don't even carry their turntables anymore.
Other mixers to Consider:
Tascam XS3 2channel mixer
Tascam XS4 2channel mixer
Numark DM3001X 3channel mixer with eq kill switches. Cheers.

Whoa. Vestax doing that< bad? Thanks a million for that tip dj tranz, I was on the verge of buying a vestax 175 too. I'll start scouting the numark's now. Wait...this might sound a bit noobish, but what is the difference between 2 channels and 3 channels?

p.s. After doing a bunch of price searchs, indeed, behringer looks like a damn fine mixer for under 150. But damn, the beat-counter just kills it. Is there a behringer like the vmx300 without the beat counter by any chance?

Heh, no, there isn't any... But, I cover the counters off with small pieces of paper => you only see a red light that doesn't distract you...

Posted by El~ZaPo on Jun-27-2003 23:14:

I'll recommend the VMX200, its a 2-channel version of the VMX300 but it is cheaper. Most likely you are not going to need 3 sound sources at the same time. If you have for example 2 turntables and a CD player you can still hook them all up to the VMX200, you just flip a switch to change which one you want to use.

And about the beat counters: I'll agree they aren't acurate and I don't use them. I was thinking that for a side project I might try opening up the mixer and do a little soldering so that instead of the counters reading the BPM, they would read to say ZAPO.

THAT my friend would be f*cken PIMP!

Posted by Omegasox on Jun-29-2003 02:55:

I don't get why everyone makes a big deal about the beat counters. Just don't look at them, how hard is that?

I've only had the VMX-300 for a few months and after a couple of weeks I was completely oblivious to them.

Well, Vestax has problems with channel faders and replacement parts are almost non existent. Channels tend to bleed after a short period of time, and those models that are equipped with eq kill switches, you can hear the pop when what ever eq frequency gets killed and then turned back on.

I don't think any of the 19" rack mixers have instant eq kill switches.
If you do want a rack mount with kill switches, I am not sure if Behringer Pro DJX700 will have rack ear fitting, but if it does then you can get DJX700 for $200.00 and rack ears for $30.00. Otherwise I suggest getting Numark Matrix 3 Fusion Series.for $279.95 That has nice features and NO BEAT COUNTERS, sorry couldn't help it!

Cheers....
