Buying new speakers! need help

Hey there, well its time to upgrade, im moving into a new house and need new speakers. i dont really know what im after i just want something that has great clarity. Ivebeen told to look into Yamaha Ns-10's as i was told they were indystry standard for studio's but i think they're outdated now.

so basically can anyone tell me which speakers would be ideal for a room, ideally studio monitors with great clarity

and also what amp/receiver is a good choice? feel free to post your setups... and photos will help as im trying to design my room.

I'd put my money on Tannoy Reveals. great clearity and can really pump out some juice with high volume too.

If you want just speakers for the house, go with Bose... If you want speakers for DJing/Studio/Production, go with JBL's, Tannoy's, or Mackie's.

tannoy is the way to go... my dad has a pair of 15" golds...they are very clear. personally i use klipsch speakers but it looks like youre looking for studio and not hifi...

Can you be more specific please?

1. What is your budget?
2. How big of a room are you talking about?
3. What kind of tunes? (genre)
4. Will you be using vinyl, cds, both, or instruments?
5. You want more bass or more highs and mids sound?
6. How powerful is the amp going to be or do you also need to get an amp or are you considering only active monitors(already amplified)???
7. approximate dimensions of the speakers, that is how much space you have where you'll be placing the speakers?

I can pinpoint a great sound system for you if you can provide the above info.

Oh and btw, those yamahas are not only outdated, they are not industry standard by any means, just an FYI!!! Cheers...

Well I'm in the market for speakers and an amp too, I need something that isn't very expensive, I dont want to spend that much. Maybe 300 including an amp at the most hopefully less. I want clear speakers with good bass. These are just for my bassment, and maybe to bring to college dorm with me, so not too big. Using Vinyl and CD, and mainly trance. Also a good amp to accompany these :P.

I would have to disagree with you here. Bose is overpriced and poor quality.

Remember, you dont necessarily have to get a pair of designated "studio monitors" if you want good sounding, flat, neutral and transparent speakers.

I recently purchased a new pair of speakers that I use for casual listening and studio monitoring (for producing tracks). It was a hard decision, but in conclusion, I discovered that buying a pair of audiophile speakers was a better way to go than buying a pair of "monitors".

I ended up with a pair of Axiom M22ti's. With a price tag of $550 CND, they have ALOT higher preformance than monitors at that price (eg M-Audio Studiophile BX5). Heck, these speakers have alot higher performance than monitors costing $1000. The clarity and neutrality achieved by the M22's is unparelled by any speaker I have heard under 1,000. But then, they arnt powered monitors, so you will need a decent amp to run them, about 100w per channel should suffice. They also require a sub to sound good, but so do any bookshelf speakers this size.

I have agree with the poster above. I kind of went the same route they did but with a smaller budget.

My set up:
Speakers - BIC America DV62si (with modified crossovers) http://www.audioreview.com/PRD_124289_4290crx.aspx

Cable - "MegaCable" from RadioShack, it is 12 guage copper speaker wire and is the same shit is the MonsterCable (for speaker wire) and costs 99 cents a foot.

A few words about this setup. One, it needs a sub to get the low end (below 50 Hz) and I have not got one because I go to college and don't want to piss off the nieghbors. I am thinking about getting an Acoustic Research or JBL sub once I get my own place. The speakers have too much treble out of the box, but I had this guy I read aobut on www.audioreview.com fix them up and now they sound great. The amp is basicly the best power amplifier you can find for that price (~200 USD). The amp is simple but drives these speakers with great clean power.

The speakers were about ~150 USD includeing the modified crossovers.

In the end they main thing to take away from this is that you can get great flat frequency response "audiophile" speakers plus a good amp and sound as good (if you are cheap) or better (if you have some more money like the above poster) then almost all "studio" speakers being sold to would be producers. I am completly happy with my disicion to go the truly hi-fi route. There are a few AMAZING sounding audiophile grade bookshelf speakers out these days for very resonable prices
